Israeli settlers throw stones at Palestinian vehicle, injure 2 Palestinians

NABLUS (Ma’an) — Two Palestinian security officers sustained injuries on Monday evening after Israeli settlers hurled stones at their vehicle as they traveled near the illegal Yitzhar settlement south of Nablus in the northern occupied West Bank. Palestinian security sources told Ma’an that a group of Israeli settlers ambushed a Palestinian vehicle and showered it with stones. Palestinian security officers Imad Salih and Majd Salih who were in the vehicle sustained moderate to minor wounds. An Israeli ambulance and several military vehicles arrived to give first aid treatment to the victims. A spokesperson for Israel’s emergency service Magen David Adom could not immediately confirm the incident.Earlier on Monday, Israeli forces closed the Huwwara checkpoint south of Nablus to traffic after an Israeli settler claimed that his car was pelted with stones on the main road near Huwwara village, the Palestinian security sources added. Israeli soldiers reportedly stopped Palestinian youth who were walking near the main road and questioned them.

Israel’s parliament, the Knesset passed a law in July making penalties for stone-throwing more severe, making cases of stone-throwing punishable by 10 years behind bars without having to prove intent to harm or cause damage, and 20-years where intent could be proven. The amendment has been lambasted by Palestinian Knesset members and rights groups as disproportionately targeting Palestinian youth, as measures are rarely brought against Jewish Israelis who carry out similar acts.
