GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — Israeli forces fired gunshots at Gaza electricity company technicians on Monday morning in the southern Gaza Strip, witnesses told Ma’an. According to eyewitnesses, the technicians were doing maintenance work on electricity lines in the eastern suburbs of the town of Khuzaa, east of Khan Yunis, when Israeli troops fired at them. No injuries were reported.Meanwhile, Palestinian fishermen said that Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishing boats off the coast of Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip, causing no casualties. An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that they were looking into the reports. Israeli military incursions inside the besieged Gaza Strip and near the “buffer zone,” which lies on both land and sea sides of Gaza, have long been a near-daily occurrence. Palestinians who work near the “buffer zone” between the Palestinian enclave and Israel often come under fire from military forces, as the Israeli military has not made clear the precise area of the designated zone.

The Gaza Strip has experienced severe electricity shortages over the years, exacerbating already dire living conditions in the besieged Palestinian territory.Even at full capacity, Egyptian and Israeli electricity grids, together with Gaza’s sole power plant, fail to cover the Gaza Strip’s energy needs and only provide energy to Gaza’s inhabitants for eight hours each day.The power plant has not run at full capacity in years, with Israel’s crippling blockade severely limiting fuel imports into the coastal enclave, and impeding the capacity to repair Gaza’s damaged infrastructure in the wake of a devastating Israeli offensive in 2014.
