“Israeli” Tanks Are No Match for Hezbollah’s Hybrid Warfare

“Israeli” Tanks Are No Match for Hezbollah’s Hybrid Warfare

By Staff, The National Interest

The exercises last month by the “Israeli” entity’s 188th Barak [“Lightning”] Armored Brigade on the occupied Golan Heights, illustrated the wide spectrum of threats the “Israel” Occupation Forces [IOF] must prepare for: the maneuvers included conventional mechanized operations, counter-guerrilla tactics against an irregular army like Hezbollah, and destroying tunnels.

The IOF would love nothing better than to fight an old-fashioned tank battle, at which it is famously proficient. But twenty-first-century warfare is more about guerrillas and tunnels, and these are the bane of high-tech, mechanized armies.

The “Israeli” Army has had to cope with Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas infiltration tunnels dug from Gaza into the southern “Israeli” entity. Last year, the “Israelis” discovered what they alleged were several Hezbollah tunnels between southern Lebanon and the northern parts of the “Israeli” entity, stoking fears of a surprise Hezbollah operations to seize al-Jaleel [Galilee].

The problem is that tanks can’t get inside a tunnel, but a Hezbollah fighter with an anti-tank missile can pop out of one and destroy a $5 million Merkava tank. Haunting the “Israeli” Armored Corps is the debacle of the 2006 “Israel”-Lebanon War, when Hezbollah used a sprawling network of tunnels in southern Lebanon to ambush and knock out numerous “Israeli” armored vehicles.

The “Israeli” armor commanders seemed grimly determined to avoid a repeat of 2006.  “We understood there was a need for change,” Lt. Col. Yoav Schneider, commander of the “Israeli” entity’s 82nd Tank Battalion said.

If tunnels were the only threat faced by “Israel”, that would be challenging enough. But the IOF also has to prepare for a conflict with Hezbollah, a formidable practitioner of “hybrid warfare” that combines the well-trained soldiers and advanced weapons of a conventional army with the flexibility and elusiveness of guerrillas. Battling Hezbollah could encompass everything from stopping a surprise Hezbollah attack to seize “Israeli” towns, to crossing into well-fortified southern Lebanon to destroy Hezbollah rocket operations.

An advance into Lebanon will not be the timid, clumsy offensive of 2006.

The threat of advanced anti-tank weapons, such as the deadly laser-guided Russian Kornet employed by Hezbollah in 2006, had led some critics to question whether tanks are still useful. Combat in the rough terrain that guerrillas will operate from, such as hills or the numerous villages that dot Lebanon and Syria, is challenging for armored vehicles.

And there yet still more challenges the IOF must train for. And the worst part is that the “Israelis” can never be sure which threat will emerge next. This array of threats would tax even a superpower, let alone a nation of fewer than nine million people.

In the rich dialogue, which is full of meanings, equations and information, which was conducted by colleague Ghassan Ben Jeddou with the Secretary General of Hizbullah many themes, Lebanese, Arab, regional and international, but in the dialogue were constants loyalty to the commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, General Qassem Soleimani, and fairness of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It reveals bright aspects in the biographies of the two characters as was clear from the path of dialogue where Nasrallah revealed what he did not say before and was not in circulation.

In talking about Haj Qassem, as al-Sayyid calls him, Mr. Nasrallah addressed the character of Haj Qassem, as Mr. Nasrallah calls him, as an intellectual, fighter, intellectual and strategic military leader, and as a slender, devious, humble, creative, eager, magnanimous and generous person, , and as a human being delicate, believing, humble, moral, eager, generous, at the level of thinking, planning, follow-up, or implementation, what people know about the field leadership role of Hajj Qassem in the wars in Syria and Iraq in the face of takfiri terrorism, translated into presence in the front sites of the fighting and challenging the danger is nothing but a little of what can be said about the biography of this leader.

In Palestine, Haj Qassem, who had the idea of supplying the resistance with the Kornet missiles, which Hezbollah received as a contribution from the Syrian leadership by the decision of President Bashar al-Assad, which played a crucial role in the manufacture of the victory of the resistance in the July 2006 war, and formed after its arrival in Gaza, a decisive element the decisive deterrence in the face of the Zionist plans of the ground attack, and in Iraq Haj Qassem was not only the leader of the confrontation with ISIS, but was the backbone of the formations of resistance movements that imposed on the American withdrawal in 20111. Haj Qassem through his study of the phenomena and the signs of the “Arab Spring”, is the first to highlight the concern that Syria is in the eye of targeting and his proactive vision and discussion with President Assad and the Syrian leadership and the leadership of the Resistance and Iranian constraints was able to contain the first stages of preparation of the war on Syria, to mature the field confrontation as an option, and in Syria, Haj Qassem had an influential role in resolving President Putin Vladimir’s decision to interfere in the war on Syria. The political and strategic leadership of Shahid Soleimani, revealed by Mr. Nasrallah, was his contribution to the commemoration of his martyrdom.

In the fairness that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad deserves, in the face of wars of distortion, abuse and slander, Mr. Nasrallah has made a high-class contribution, which revealed aspects of the roles and positions of President Al-Assad, which contribute to his understanding as a courageous historical leader committed to decisive choices towards the concepts of independence, sovereignty and resistance. Mr. Nasrallah says that President Al-Assad does not accept any interference or guardianship on the Affairs of Syria from enemies or allies, Mr. Nasrallah mentioned that Haj Qassem Soleimani asked to provide the resistance in Palestine with Cornet missiles purchased by the Syrian army, which was done after getting Assad’s approval being the owner of these missiles

The general dialogue with Mr. Nasrallah was dedicated to promoting the axis of resistance, in loyalty to the chief of staff of his martyr armies, and in the fairness of the political and military leader who triumphed over the most dangerous global war.

The political advisor of Hezbollah Secretary General Hajj Hussein Khalil revealed on Friday more behind-the-scenes details of the political process of July War in 2006.

In the second part of an interview with Al-Manar’s Panorama of Victory, Khalil said another heated meeting took place between him and then-Prime Minister Fuad Siniora during the 33-day-war, noting that Speaker Nabih Berri was present at the meeting.

Negotiations

“Siniora repeatedly said during the war that Shebaa Farms were not Lebanese and that the UN Security Council should discuss this issue.”

Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah’s advisor said he had a meeting with a Lebanese security official, close to Al-Mustaqbal Party, during the war, noting that the official tried to raise the issue of Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) which has been looking into the 2005 bombing which killed former Prime Minister martyr Rafiq Hariri.

“I asked the official about the relation between the war and the STL. He also offered that Hezbollah must hand over its heavy weapons and that multinational forces must be deployed at the border between Lebanon and Syria in exchange for cessation of hostilities,” Khalil said, stressing that Hezbollah categorically rejected that offer.

Meanwhile, Khalil revealed that in one day of the war Speaker Berri voiced concern over some reports, noting that Sayyed Nasrallah at time told him to inform the speaker that the situation of Resistance fighters in battlefields of the southern towns was excellent.

“Speaker Berri told the Americans that there was no problem to raise the number of UNIFIL forces in south Lebanon, but that he stressed that amending their task was out of question.”

Syria’s Support and Martyr Suleimani

Talking about support by the Arab Syrian Republic, Khalil stressed that all military supplies including missiles and especially Kornet missiles did not stop during the war.

“Syrian official did not abandon the Lebanese Resistance. Missiles from both Iran and Syrian Army were transferred to Hezbollah during the war. They didn’t hesitate to supply the resistanc with game-changing weapons.”

Remembering former Head of IRGC’s Quds Force martyr General Qassem Suleimani, Khalil said the top Iranian general was in Lebanon during the 33-day war, noting that he played a major role in the battlefield.

“After the war was over, Russia offered Sayyed Nasrallah a gift in which it voiced satisfaction with the good results of the Russian-made Kornet missiles, which were used by Resistance fighters against Israeli tanks especially in Hujeir Valley.”
