Shea Lies Through Her Teeth as Lebanon’s Electricity Crisis Worsens

August 30, 2022

By Mohammad Youssef

More than a year ago, US Ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy Shea has given a promise to help Lebanon with power supplies from Egypt and Jordan. A year later, all those promises have proven to be utter lies.

Meanwhile, the new Iranian ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, has repeated his predecessor’s offer to supply Lebanon with free fuel had the Lebanese government requested this officially.

This reflects clearly who are the real friends of Lebanon during its dire crisis.

The US ambassador has never been summoned by any official at the foreign ministry to ask her about her continuous lies, nor was she criticized by any Lebanese government official.

The whole issue would cost a decision by Washington to ease the sanctions against Lebanon and lift the siege that blocks the way for receiving help from Egypt and Jordan. Washington which is veteran in sieges against people and bringing them to the brink of deprivation and famine is exercising its criminal policy now against Lebanon and the Lebanese.

This kind of suffocating blockade is reminiscent of other blockades and sieges that the US imposed against free nations in different parts of the world, namely Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Syria, among many others.

This criminal punishment by Washington has cost dear lives, in Iraq alone half-a-million child died because of this, not to mention the great suffering of the people on many levels.

At the time, no one dared to criticize and condemn America for its crimes except for an independent initiative by former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad who set an international tribunal in the year 2005 in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur to sue the war criminals, the tribunal which was a kind of international conference for judiciary and law experts condemned war criminals namely, US President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Contrary to this, Iran has extended and continues to extend a helping hand to Lebanon on many levels.

It has expressed its willingness and readiness to help Lebanon in building two power plants for electricity supplies which will be of great benefit for our country.

Time and again, the Islamic Republic of Iran has offered help to Lebanon and never given false promises. Nowadays, Iran waits for an official Lebanese answer to the new offer to supply Lebanon with free fuel oil.

The problem has been always because of the official Lebanese stance that fears Washington and its sanctions.

The kind of official conduct by the Lebanese government is shameful and lacks respect for our country and people alike. It does not reflect at all that we are a free and sovereign country, rather a pro-western nation that is dictated by Washington.

My vision and our promise, this will not continue and the majority of the Lebanese will not accept to be subordinate to Washington or any other country.

It is time for our officials to learn how to protect our dignity and independence so they would resemble their people that sacrificed lives for the sake of the country’s independence and liberation.

US embassy tweet sparks outrage in Lebanon

Lebanese citizens are up in arms over the US embassy latest violation of the nation’s sovereignty

Social media users in Lebanon are expressing outrage over a tweet from the US embassy’s official account published on 24 August.

“Today, on Ukraine’s National Day, we stand at the US Embassy in Beirut in solidarity with the Ukrainian people who suffered six months of aggression by the Russian regime,” the tweet reads, alongside an image of the Lebanese flag next to a Ukrainian flag.

A majority of commenters blasted the embassy for blatantly disrespecting Lebanon’s sovereignty by using a Lebanese flag in their post, essentially speaking on behalf of an entire nation.

“Who allowed you to [use] the Lebanese flag? Your opinion does not represent us,” one of the most liked comments reads.

“By what right does the US embassy place the Lebanese flag next to the Ukrainian [flag] for solidarity? Is this not a violation of Lebanese sovereignty?” another tweet asks in Arabic.

“The Lebanese flag is not yours to use for your political agenda! You are so disrespectful to our country and our autonomy!” another commenter decries.

The US Embassy tweet is the most recent example of Washington’s attempts to frame the Lebanese state’s opinions in the promotion of its various geopolitical agendas – in this case, Ukraine.

At the onset of the war in February, US ambassador Dorothy Shea directly requested that Prime Minister Najib Mikati release a statement condemning Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, which he faithfully executed.

Reactions to Mikati’s statement were swift to arrive, with everyone from the country’s president to cabinet members and members of parliament heavily criticizing the flagrant violation of Lebanon’s policy of disassociation and neutrality.

US embassy blames Russia for Lebanon’s woes

Wednesday’s ill-conceived tweet from the US embassy is the first in a short thread that claims Lebanon is “increasingly food insecure due to the [Russian] invasion.”

This, however, ignores the wide ranging effects that US sanctions on Syria have had on the Lebanese economy since 2019. Syria represents Lebanon’s only land border, and Washington has prohibited – under threat of sanctions – the transport of goods over this vital border.

It also ignores a recent blackmail attempt by the Ukrainian embassy in Lebanon over a cargo ship that was carrying thousands of tons of Russian grain to Syria, and whose owners decided to unload some of the cargo in Lebanon.

The Ukrainian embassy accused the Syrian vessel of carrying “stolen grain” from Ukraine, and demanded Beirut impound the ship after it docked in Tripoli and pay Kiev for the grain.

Lebanese customs authorities quickly confirmed the grain originated in Russia and released the ship.

The US embassy’s twitter thread also hailed a recent $29.5 million donation in “food assistance from the US Agency for International Development (USAID).”

Washington’s paltry donation was a public relations show made to counter an offers of free fuel from Iran and hundreds of thousands of tons of wheat from Russia.

At the time, the US embassy warned Lebanese officials against accepting these offers from Washington’s adversaries, despite Beirut’s desperate need for food and fuel.

Since 2019, Lebanon has been experiencing the complete collapse of its economy, as the currency lost over 90 percent of its value and 80 percent of citizens plunged below the poverty line. The country’s energy sector has also been destroyed by decades of mismanagement, while fuel and bread shortages are a common occurrence.

Many commenters in the US embassy’s post also reminded the US of its empty promise to implement an energy sharing deal with Egypt and Jordan via Syria.

“We also remember every day the siege that you imposed on us and our peoples, and on this day we commemorate the anniversary of your promise to help in importing gas and electricity from Jordan and Egypt,” prominent Lebanese journalist Hosein Mortada highlighted.

The US embassy in Lebanon has long been accused of interfering in the country’s affairs, not only by monitoring and impeding Beirut’s foreign relationships, but also by plotting to persecute resistance groups and shielding corrupt Lebanese authorities from the law.

How the US controls Lebanon’s energy supply

Far from helping Lebanon solve its acute energy crisis, the US is leveraging Egypt’s gas supply to pressure Beirut over US-brokered maritime border talks with Israel

Consider the chaos in Europe today caused by a sudden reduction in Russian gas supplies.

Now imagine the catastrophic state of Lebanon’s energy sector after two years of fuel shortages, limited foreign currency with which to purchase new, urgent supplies, and US-sanctions on Syria impeding Lebanon’s only land route for imports.

After decades of stalled reforms, Lebanon is running out of time and money.

In June 2021, a lifeline was handed to the country in a deal struck with Baghdad to supply two Lebanese power stations with Iraqi fuel. The agreement, which was due to expire in September 2022, has recently been extended for one year.

But while there are short and long term solutions available to remedy Lebanon’s energy crisis, the two main options are both monopolized by US policymakers with stakes in regional geopolitics.

The first option involves transporting fuel to Lebanon via the Arab Gas Pipeline (AGP), whereby Egypt will supply gas through Syria. Although the proposal was originally an American suggestion, this fuel route requires US sanctions waivers that have not yet been approved by Washington.

The second option is for Lebanon to extract its own gas supply from newly discovered fields off its coastline. This too depends entirely on US-mediated, indirect negotiations with Israel to resolve a maritime dispute over the Karish gas field in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Accessing its own gas supplies will go a long way to guarantee Lebanon’s own energy security, while providing the state with much needed revenues from exports.

However, the success of either project depends largely on the status of US-Lebanese relations at any given moment. The two options are also inextricably linked to each other: Washington is pressuring Beirut to compromise with Tel Aviv on the maritime border dispute before agreeing to “green light” Cairo’s gas exports via Syria, which is in turn heavily sanctioned by the US’s “Caesar Act.”

While Washington is playing a leverage game, Lebanon is slowly collapsing.

Gas from Egypt

Under the agreement signed with Cairo, 650 million cubic meters of natural gas will be exported annually via the AGP. As it turns out, the actual supply of gas, as per the World Bank’s conditions, awaits US approval to exclude Egypt from sanctions imposed on the passage of goods through Syria.

The AGP is already a functioning pipeline that has supplied Lebanon with Egyptian gas in the past, but operations were halted in 2011 when Syrian pipelines were damaged during the country’s armed conflict.

Under the deal, Egypt will pump gas through the pipeline to supply Lebanon’s northern Deir Ammar power plant, which can then produce 450 megawatts of electricity – adding four hours of additional electricity supply per day. It is a modest but necessary improvement over the barely two hours of electricity currently provided by the state.

The World Bank has pledged to finance the deal on the condition that the Lebanese government implements much needed reforms in the electricity sector, which has created tens of billions of dollars in public debt.

The Syrian equation

For the Syrian government, the arrangement is perceived as a diplomatic victory as it confers ‘legitimacy’ to the state and represents a step toward its international rehabilitation. The AGP deal was also hailed by Syrian Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources Bassam Tohmy as one of the most important joint Arab cooperation projects.

According to Will Todman, a research fellow in the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the agreement is “a win for the [Bashar al-]Assad government. The deal represents the first major move toward Syria’s economic integration with the region since Arab Spring protests shook Syria in March 2011, halting previous integration efforts.”

However, due to US Caesar Law restrictions, no concrete progress has been made over the past months. Amman and Cairo have both requested guarantees from Washington that they will not be subject to sanctions – to no avail. US President Joe Biden has yet to make a final decision on whether the plan will be considered a violation of sanctions on Syria.

Linking the Egypt deal with Israel talks

In order to create a certain interdependency in the region to minimize the possibility of new conflicts with Israel, the US is attempting to link the Egyptian gas deal with the ongoing, indirect, maritime negotiations between Tel Aviv and Beirut.

Amos Hochstein, the State Department senior adviser on energy security, who acts as chief mediator on the disputed maritime border between Lebanon and Israel, said after arriving in Beirut on 14 June that the US side will look at the final agreement between Egypt and Lebanon to evaluate the sanctions compliance of the natural gas project.

This means that Washington is linking the fate of the gas deal to the maritime dispute with Israel to exert additional pressure on Lebanon.

On 14 October, 2020 – just two months after the Beirut port blast which severed the primary transportation route for seaborne Lebanese imports – Lebanon and Israel began the long-awaited US-mediated talks to demarcate their maritime borders, under the supervision of the UN.

The framework agreement announced by both countries at the time was the most serious attempt to resolve the maritime dispute and secure gas drilling operations through diplomatic means.

However, there are many challenges that can slow or even derail these negotiations.

According to Lebanese estimates, the country has 96 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves and 865 million barrels of oil offshore, and is in urgent need to begin drilling to save its ailing economy.

Israel is also in hurry to resolve this dispute as it wants to finalize the negotiations before September 2022, when the Karish gas rig is expected to begin production. The concern is that if a deal is not signed by then, Hezbollah may take action to halt Israel’s extraction altogether – until Lebanon is able to extract its own fuel from those waters.

Resolution or conflict

Last month, Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah reiterated warnings against Tel Aviv in the event that Lebanon is prevented from extracting its own resources in the Med. “When things reach a dead-end, we will not only stand in the face of Karish… Mark these words: we will reach Karish, beyond Karish, and beyond, beyond Karish,” he cautioned.

Initially, Lebanon took a maximalist position on its maritime borders with Israel: the main dispute was around the percentage both countries should share in the disputed 860 square kilometers, which covers Lebanon’s offshore gas Blocks 8, 9 and 10.

It is worth mentioning that Lebanon does not enter these negotiations from a position of strength and is in dire economic need to unlock foreign aid and begin the flow of potential gas revenues.

Meanwhile, the arrival this summer of the British-based Energean, an oil and gas exploration company, which will begin a drilling operation close to the Karish gas field, has sparked tensions between both countries, prompting US envoy Hochstein to race back to the region on 13 June.

In order to provide Lebanon with some much-needed leverage and accelerate negotiations, Hezbollah dispatched three drones towards the Karish gas field on 2 July. The operation sought several results: to test Israeli military responses to the drones, to scare off the private company contractors working on the rig, and to motivate both Tel Aviv and Washington to step up and strike a deal.

The operation achieved its goals. Israel’s military now can’t rule out the possibility that the Lebanese resistance movement will launch additional attacks on the gas field in the near future, or provoke Israel in a different manner – if the maritime dispute is not ironed out, and soon.

Beyond the Mediterranean Sea

The negotiations have also been impacted by international developments, chiefly, the war in Ukraine and the growing energy crisis in Europe. Sweeping western economic sanctions on Moscow’s economic interests have dried up Russian exports to the continent, driving Europe to seek alternative sources of energy, few of which are readily available.

In May 2022, the US and EU unveiled a plan to reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels and in June, the EU and Israel signed an agreement to export Israeli gas to Europe. These external factors have further motivated the US and Israel to hasten the negotiation process with Lebanon, all of which are overshadowed by the aforementioned US pressure on the Lebanese government.

Energy expert Laury Haytayan believes that linking Lebanon to regional energy projects makes it harder for Lebanon to go to war with Israel. Haytayan told The Cradle: “Lebanon needs gas, Israel needs stability, and the US wants to give both what they want.”

It is important to recognize that a final maritime demarcation agreement also means defusing the tensions on the Lebanese-Israeli border, which may require a broader US-Iranian agreement, something that is unlikely in the short term.

If the gas deal is successful and the US approves the Egyptian energy exports, the move will only increase US leverage over Lebanon when it comes to future negotiations on energy security.

It is in Lebanon’s interest to ensure that one party, the US, does not continue to hold all the cards related to its vital fuel needs. A recent offer from Iran to supply the country with monthly free fuel was tacitly accepted by Lebanon’s prime minister and energy minister, but needs work. Other states have offered to build power generation plants to enhance the nation’s infrastructure and efficiency.

But with Lebanon so deeply affected by Washington’s whims – and punishments – it isn’t at all certain that the country can steer itself to these more independent options.

The US and Israel have never been this highly incentivized to solve the maritime dispute. If the deal fails, Hezbollah may proceed with military action, especially before the conclusion of political ally President Michel Aoun’s term this Fall.

Furthermore, the gas issue may turn into a contentious domestic political issue ahead of Israel’s November parliamentary elections. In that instance too, a military conflict between Israel and Hezbollah may be triggered.

The only solution is to strike a deal, get gas flowing, and avert war. Will saner minds prevail, or will the region’s high-stakes geopolitical competition continue to escalate blindly? More importantly, can Washington bear to allow Lebanon the breathing space after three years of severe economic pressure to control Beirut’s political decisions?

Axios said that the Americans raised concerns about the Karish drone incident and asked the Lebanese government to speak against it.

Axios: US pressured Lebanon to criticize Hezbollah for drones

US-based Axios website said President Joe Biden’s administration pressured the Lebanese government to criticize Hezbollah’s sending of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to the Karish field natural gas platform in the Mediterranean sea.

Citing sources briefed on the issue, the website indicated that “U.S. energy envoy Amos Hochstein and U.S. ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy Shea spoke to senior political and military leaders in Lebanon over the weekend,” adding that both of them “raised concerns about the drones incident and asked the Lebanese government to publicly speak against it.”

Lebanese Resistance movement Hezbollah had released a statement on the three UAVs sent on a recon mission over the Karish gas field, before being shot down by Israeli occupation forces.

Israeli occupation forces had announced that they shot down the three UAVs off the Mediterranean coast. One of the UAVs was downed by an F16 fighter jet, and the other two by Barak missiles launched from the Saar 5 Class Corvette, according to a statement by the IOF.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah had recently threatened the Israeli occupation over its attempts to forcibly extract gas from the contested region, saying the resistance is prepared to prevent them from infringing on Lebanese sovereignty.

Israeli media: IOF air force faced difficulty downing Hezbollah drones

A preliminary Israeli occupation forces investigation had revealed that the IOF air force pilots faced difficulty in downing one of Hezbollah’s unmanned drones that were launched towards the Karish platform on Saturday, Israeli news website Walla reported.

The IOF investigation report also revealed that the Israeli pilots failed to track the second Hezbollah drone that was launched at the Karish platform before the drone was downed using a Barak missile from the Saar 5 Class Corvette.

The preliminary investigation indicated that the IOF missile launched missed the target, while Israeli pilots also faced difficulties in identifying the third drone because it was flying at a low altitude.

Sayyed Nasrallah: Hezbollah, Allies Emerged Victorious… Supporters Provided Resistance with Safety Network

MAY 18TH, 2022

By Al-Ahed news

Hezbollah Secretary General His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah delivered on Wednesday a speech tackling the Lebanese parliamentary elections and he latest political developments on the internal arena.

At the beginning of his speech, Sayyed Nasrallah thanked every person who voted during the Lebanese parliamentary electoral process. “We highly appreciate all those who performed this duty despite every hardship,” he said.

His Eminence further thanked all volunteers who contributed to Hezbollah’s electoral machine during the Lebanese Parliamentary Elections.

In addition, the Resistance Leader thanked those who voted for the Resistance by saying: “I thank you very much and I can’t say but that I’m speechless when it comes to thanking you.”

“The massive popular participation and the results of the elections convey a message of adhering to the resistance and its weapons,” he viewed.

Sayyed Nasrallah continued by thanking the resistance people for establishing a shield of protection for their resistance via elections’ results noting that “The voters provided the resistance with a safety network against the campaign of targeting that followed the daily financial and media campaigns.”

In parallel, His Eminence hailed the fact that “The Resistance men were performing two roles at once; the first was to contribute to the success of the electoral day and the second by staying ready to defend Lebanon [against any attack].”

Denouncing the fact that “The US and its Lebanese allies are responsible for the greatest theft that Lebanon has suffered all over the past 3 years,” he confirmed that “Neither intimidation nor threatening the people with their future yielded any result.”

“On the level of Resistance, the outcome is a major victory which we are proud of given the circumstances of the battle, the tools that have been used, and the money that was spent in it,” Sayyed Nasrallah mentioned, noting that “Hezbollah’s electoral achievement came after a major media and psychological attack on the resistance and its allies added to the economic pressures, sanctions and various crises.”

According to His Eminence, “The massive popular participation and the results of the elections convey a message of adhering to the resistance and its weapons. What happened is a great victory that we in Hezbollah are proud of, especially when we study the battle’s conditions and what was used and spent in it.”

On another level, he underlined that “What we witnessed concerning the elections and the honorable Sunni sect’s stance particularly the ‘Future Movement’s’ boycott is a very important issue that needs a calm, responsible and accurate approach.”

Regarding the new parliamentary map, Sayyed Nasrallah praised the fact that “The resistance and its allies achieved a strong and big presence in the new parliament,” noting that “It isn’t true that the parliamentary majority has shifted from one place to another.”

As His Eminence rejected the talk that a political camp in the country can claim to have won the parliamentary majority, Hezbollah Secretary General explained that “We’re in front of a parliament that is composed of different and diversified blocs that include independent representatives, all the alliances will affect its shape, but it is clear that nobody could claim to have the parliamentary majority.”

“The interest of the Lebanese people might be in what happened,” he emphasized, pointing out that “When no one has the majority, this means that everyone is responsible, and no one is allowed to relinquish the responsibility.”

Urging all political sides for pacifying the political rhetoric, Sayyed Nasrallah underscored that “We’re all concerned with pacifying the country and bickering will not lead to a result.”

Meanwhile, His Eminence called for calming the situation in Lebanon and tending to deal with the issues that concern the people through partnership and cooperation rather than rivalry.

“The extent of the financial, economic and life crises in the country can’t be solved by a single team even if it obtains the majority,” he stated, noting that “The state could have set up seven or eight mega centers to make voting easier for the people.”

Warning that “The entire world is moving into a crisis as fuel and wheat’s prices have risen and there are things that may be cut off in the market,” Sayyed Nasrallah advised Hezbollah rivals by saying: “If you think that we might feel tired or abandon defending the resistance, you’re delusional and your debates won’t reach a place.

Moreover, he urged all political sides to review their practical performance and alliances. “The recent experience carries many lessons in which everybody reviews their practical performance, alliances, and rhetoric. Crises couldn’t be dealt with but through partnership and cooperation.”

Sayyed Nasrallah also called for calming the situation in Lebanon and tending to deal with the issues that concern the people through partnership and cooperation rather than rivalry

Responding to certain political fabrications that accompanied elections, His Eminence reminded that “Among the lies that have been promoted is the one about how to hold elections amid the presence of the resistance’s weapons… isn’t it high time for this lie to come to an end?”

Another lie is about the ‘Iranian occupation’. On this level, he wondered: “We’ve witnessed the US embassy and the Saudi ambassador’s intervention who were the most active during the elections, did you witness the Iranian ambassador or any embassy employee intervening in the elections?”

To “Someone” [former PM Fouad Siniora] who formed lists all over Lebanon and was financed by the foreign embassies, who won two or three seats, claims that the people have expelled the resistance, Sayyed Nasrallah sent a sounding message: “How does this ‘someone’ dare to talk on behalf of the Lebanese people as he didn’t gain more than a few thousand votes

Elaborating that “Those who claim that a certain choice is the most popular in Lebanon have to return to the majority of votes to identify this,” he went on to say: “Under such an electoral system, the numbers of MPs do not truly reflect the popular will. One must look at the number of voters, not MPs.”

“The distribution of electoral districts happened in this unscientific manner as they are cut and pasted upon the interests of some political leaders. The numbers of votes for the Loyalty and Hope lists in some districts is way above 500,000… don’t those represent the popular will?” His Eminence said.

According to Hezbollah Secretary General, “Lebanon must be a single electoral district based on proportional and non-sectarian representation and youths from the age of 18 must have the right to vote, so that the number of MPs can reflect popular choices.”

Sayyed Nasrallah assured the people of resistance: “We won’t spare any effort, especially for those who sacrificed their blood and gave us their votes,” urging supporters not to stage motorbike rallies.

“More than once I repeated that shooting in the air is forbidden, and this is the fatwa of our scholars, because this terrifies people. Any Hezbollah member who shoots in the air will be expelled,” he stressed, noting that “We have told our supporters that the ‘Shia, Shia, Shia’ slogan is inappropriate. We want calm and stability and we don’t want provocations.”

The US Has A Habit of Deceiving Foes and Friends – And Lebanon Is No Exception!

February 12, 2022

By Mohammed Youssef

Beirut – Lebanon continues to suffer from US sanctions and siege.

When Hezbollah Secretary General His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah announced the commencement of importing fuel supplies from Iran to break the sinister American plots against Lebanon, the US ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy Shea who was saddened rather shocked by Sayyed Nasrallah’s announcement, rushed hastily to announce that her government would allow Lebanon to receive the gas from Egypt and Jordan via Syria to maintain electricity supplies to the down trodden country.

Months have passed since this American announcement but nothing has materialized and the US ambassador’s promises have not been delivered. Washington did not bother to clarify its position.

The US has never been at any time a friend to Lebanon, and it can never be. As long as it totally sides with Lebanon’s first and only enemy, “Israel”. Washington has always supported the Zionist enemy with military aid and sophisticated heavy equipment. It has always given the green light for all the invasions, incursions and even to the occupation of Lebanon. Moreover, Washington offered our enemy “Israel” the political cover by sabotaging any international attempt to condemn it by the international community by using the veto power at the Security Council. This puts Washington in the position of a complete partner and accomplice with “Israel”.

No Lebanese can be fooled anymore by Washington, except if he or she wants to!

So, why did Washington make those promises and why it is breaking them!

The answer is a very simple and easy one.

The US ambassador was at a hurry to announce anything to devaluate Hezbollah’s achievement of bringing the Iranian fuel. This is normal in the American standards, as it meets directly with their fixed policy to distort Hezbollah’s image. This is not a secret policy and they have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to make it come true according to their former ambassador to Lebanon Jeffrey Feltman.

Another equally or even more important issue has to do with the maritime dispute between Lebanon and the enemy entity “Israel”.

Washington wants Lebanon to accept its proposals about the distribution of the oil and gas present in the disputed area. It is exercising its pressure and using the policy of procrastination and blackmail.

The enemy has an open greedy appetite to steal our natural resources of every kind.

Washington has used every method possible to pressure Lebanon so it can surrender to its proposals; the US blackmail and dictations want simply to give the larger proportion of gas and oil present in the disputed maritime area to “Israel”.

Washington is notorious for deceiving and betraying its enemies and friends. Lebanon is no exception to the US.

The question now is where are the US friends and why did they swallow their tongues.

It is again a lesson to be learned by the Lebanese, friends and enemies alike; will they do!

Dorothy Shea’s Empty Promises

December 28 2021

Dorothy Shea

By Mohammad Youssef

When Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah first announced the party will import fuel from Iran to break the sinister cycle of the US siege, the American ambassador to Beirut Dorothy Shea, as usual, tried to belittle the achievement. She suddenly announced that Washington is ready to help and made the necessary contacts to insure the gas supplies would reach Lebanon from Egypt via Jordan and Syria.

Months after the American ambassador’s public promise, not any drop or one single cubic centimeter of gas reached to Lebanon.

Shea did not explain why her promises did not materialize, and she disrespectfully never justified to the Lebanese people her failure to deliver.

Actually, the main motive behind the ambassador hasty decision was not alleviating the people’s suffering, because it could have done so many different things to this effect, but her basic obsession was to evacuate Hezbollah decision from its content so it would not reflect positively on the Lebanese people.

The whole issue reflects genuinely Washington’s policy and stance towards the region and its people. A policy which is based on oppression, hypocrisy and arrogance.

For its part, Hezbollah made huge efforts: from intensive contacts to necessary negotiations and from deals concluding to logistic preparations, not forgetting the military and security arrangements made to insure the whole operation. Thanks and blessings to these efforts, the fuel reached to the Lebanese houses across the nation, without any discrimination and preferences, and now hundreds of thousands of Lebanese benefit from Hezbollah and Iran’s help.

This says a lot about the party’s commitment to Lebanon and the Lebanese, and that it is always there to defend, protect and help them in any calamity.

Meanwhile, Dorothy Shea never bothered herself to say anything about her deceitful promises and misleading announcement.

But many well informed circles in Washington revealed the truth about Shea’s lies!

The American ambassador received heavy blame from her administration for making such promises to the Lebanese.

Her promise has created a division inside the US administration, many influential parties and figures refused to agree upon it, as it involved a partial lift of the Siege on Syria as well.

In fact, the United States administration has the capacity and ability to help Lebanon or at least ease its crisis, but this does not boil down to its interest of suffocating the country to make it surrender and accept Washington dictations and that of the Israeli enemy.

For her part, the US ambassador can continue her game of ignoring her fake promises, but the Lebanese will remember very well her lies and will also remember that the best thing Dorothy Shea can do is to distribute few masks in Beirut streets!

US Embassy in Beirut Donates Poisonous Vaccine to Lebanese People: Report

December 20, 2021

US ambassador to Beirut, Dorothy Shea, has been donating 360,000 shots of Johnson & Johnson vaccine which was castigated by the national public health agency of the United States as a cause of blood clots.

While CDC (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has been advising the Americans to receive Pfizer and AstraZeneca anti-coronavius vaccines, the US ambassador to Beirut, Dorothy Shea, has been donating 360,000 shots of Johnson & Johnson vaccine which was castigated by the national public health agency of the United States as a cause of blood clots.

What is remarkable in this story is that the US did not offer Lebanon any help in its fight against the coronavirus along with the advent of the pandemic when the Lebanese were in need of any related aid, especially in the field of securing the vaccine shots.

However, Lebanon is nowadays capable of securing the needed anti-coronavius vaccines in cooperation with the World Health Organization.

Moreover, the US administration has imposed a strict economic siege which led Lebanon to an unprecedented inflation crisis, pushing most the Lebanese down under the verge of poverty.

Besieging Lebanon economically and offering the Lebanese an anti-coronavirus vaccine that is rejected in Washington is a mere rudeness condemned by the Lebanese social media users via the hashtag, #US_Deadly_Vaccine.

MP Raad: US Ambassador to Lebanon Preventing Removal of Judicial Investigator into Beirut Blast Tarek Bitar

 October 25, 2021

Hezbollah MP Mohammad Raad

Head of “Loyalty to the Resistance” bloc, MP Mohammad Raad, on Monday indicated that the US ambassador to Lebanon has been preventing the removal of the judicial investigator into Beirut blast, Tarek Bitar.

Al-Bitar had issued arrest warrants against officials as well as military figures on an illogical basis, pushing the defendants and observers to cast doubts on his probe.

“There are honest judges in Lebanon, and those who politicize matters. The judiciary and its structure need to be reconsidered,” MP Raad added.

MP Raad expressed during a political meeting in the southern town of Rayhan a will to engage in the forthcoming electoral and constitutional entitlements to enhance the country’s stability.

“We want to participate in them, but this conspiracy, authoritarianism, abolition, and racist thinking have come to an end,” he said.

“We want our people to know that we are open to solutions under national dignity, sovereignty, and security, but we want double standards to come to end now,” MP Raad added.

Beirut Shootings: How Western Media Manipulation Hides the Murky Hand of US Imperialism

See the source image

Posted by INTERNATIONALIST 360° on

Steve Sweeney

The attack bore all the hallmarks of a US-backed intervention, and it doesn’t take much digging to find the links between the murky hand of Washington and the dark forces behind the bloodshed on the streets and a cover-up by a compliant western media.

Last week’s killing of seven people in the Lebanese capital Beirut, widely believed to be carried out by a far-right Christian fascist militia, is a worrying sign that the US wants to provoke a new civil war to destabilize the country in a change in its Middle East strategy.

The attack bore all the hallmarks of a US-backed intervention, and it doesn’t take much digging to find the links between the murky hand of Washington and the dark forces behind the bloodshed on the streets and a cover-up by a compliant western media.

Supporters of the Shi’ite Amal and Hezbollah movements were fired upon as they made their way to the Palace of Justice for a peaceful demonstration against what they perceive as the politicization of a probe into last year’s devastating port explosion.

The judge heading up the investigations, Tarek Bitar, is being directed by the US Embassy they claim, accusing him of unfairly and disproportionately targeting their allies while ignoring those close to Washington.

They may have a point. But the debate over the fairness and transparency of the judicial report is a side issue to the events that took place in the Tayouneh district of Beirut last week.

A peaceful march that had been approved by the authorities was fired upon by snipers placed on buildings along its route. It was an ambush by US-backed fascists who are hell-bent on plunging Lebanon into chaos.

None of the seven people killed in the protest were armed. Among the dead was Meryem Farhat, a mother shot through the head as she was getting ready to collect her child from kindergarten. Delivery driver Ali Ibrahim was also killed by sniper fire.

Not that you would know any of this judging by how the incident was reported by the western press. Readers would be forgiven for thinking that it was a Hezbollah march that turned violent, with the movement seemingly responsible for the deaths of its own supporters.

Liberal British mouthpiece The Guardian explained to its readers: “The trigger for the clashes in neighborhoods near the justice courts, which left dozens more injured, was a protest by members of Amal and Hezbollah, two predominantly Shia political parties, against a judicial probe into the massive blast in the port last year.”

“…eyewitnesses said they heard at least two explosions near the site where a protest was supposed to be held by Iran-backed Shia militia Hezbollah against a judge who is investigating last year’s devastating blast at Beirut’s port. Thursday’s shootings mark the deadliest civil violence in Beirut since 2008,” reported the part Saudi-owned Independent.

It concluded in carefully chosen language: “The heavily armed Hezbollah has accused Mr. Bitar of conducting a politicized probe.”

The Independent failed to mention the Lebanese Forces at all. Instead, it opted to make vague references to ‘unidentified gunmen.’ The Guardian mentioned their name once, but only to say that Hezbollah ‘claimed’ to have been shot at by the Christian militia.

The rest of the article followed a similar pattern to that of The Independent, containing snippets such as ‘chants of “Shia, Shia, Shia’ were heard on the streets.

“Large numbers of men brandishing weapons took to the streets throughout the day, and gun trucks flying Hezbollah and Amal flags paraded through the Bekaa Valley in a show of strength not seen since Hezbollah overran west Beirut in May 2008…” it added, failing to mention that Bekaa is nowhere near the Lebanese capital. This was the crowning glory of The Guardian hatchet job, evoking images of violent Muslims seeking to overthrow Lebanon, no doubt to impose an Islamist caliphate.

France 24 went with: “Last week, Hezbollah led a protest to demand his dismissal. It sparked a gun battle in the heart of Beirut that left seven people dead and reignited fears of new sectarian violence.”

It continued with a paragraph about “hostage diplomacy and what it means for those imprisoned by Tehran” in an exceptionally tenuous attempt to link the shootings to Iran.

That they let the Lebanese Forces, a US-backed right-wing militia led by a war criminal, off the hook is no mere accident.

Nor is the reporting down to lazy journalism. This would be to deny the role of the media as a propaganda tool used and manipulated by western imperialism to manufacture a consensus among the public.

That is that Hezbollah and Amal are the bad guys and it is up to the west, always the good guys in any situation, to step in and save the people of Lebanon from their evil clutches.

The use of descriptions such as ‘Iran-backed Shia militia Hezbollah’ is a not particularly subtle, but deliberate attempt to paint the movement – which is a legitimate political force with representatives in the Lebanese parliament – as a foreign-controlled entity.

The irony of this is, that it is, in fact, the very group responsible for the attack that is in hock to external forces, namely the US, “Israel” and Saudi Arabia who see the Lebanese Forces as its proxy inside the country.

It is perhaps best known in the west for its role in the brutal massacre of thousands of Palestinian men, women, and children on behalf of “Israel” at the Sabra and Chatila camps during the Lebanese civil war.

I visited the camps and met survivors of the three-day pogrom in Beirut earlier this year and they described how the Christian militia raped and executed more than three thousand defenseless people, as the camps were surrounded by Israeli soldiers.

The leader of the Lebanese Forces, Samir Geagea, has been convicted of war crimes, sentenced to life in prison for ordering four political assassinations, including that of former prime minister Rashid Karami in 1988.

For many, he will always be associated with the massacre of scores of people, including the bombing of Sayidat al-Najat church in Jounieh killing 10 people and wounding 54, with Christians also targeted by the bloodthirsty Geagea.

But he was released under an amnesty in 2005 following Lebanon’s so-called Cedar Revolution which took place after the assassination of prime minister Rafik Hariri, the perpetrators of which have never been brought to justice.

Geagea’s propulsion into the limelight once more comes with the US suffering a series of defeats across the Middle East, including its humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan and its failure to dislodge Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

His reelection in May has led many Arab and European nations to restore diplomatic relations with Damascus, with border crossings reopening along with the return of ambassadors and consulates as they recognize political reality.

But Assad could not have held on to power without the explicit support of the Syrian people. No leader could have withstood the pressure exerted on him without it.

Not only has he defeated Washington’s regime-change operations – he has come out the other side stronger, having faced down five US presidents; Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and now Joe Biden.

The US now appears to be strengthening its relations with Kurds in the north of the country once more where its soldiers are based as an occupying force. The Biden administration recently announced there would be no troop withdrawal, reassuring Kurdish officials after the debacle in Afghanistan.

Despite Assad’s plans for decentralization announced in April, the Kurdish administration there is pursuing a policy that seeks political recognition from the US. It is a move that has alienated many of its supporters and undermines its dismissal of claims it acts as a “proxy force” in the region.

Having lost the military and now the political war on Syria, it seems logical that the US would change its strategy to foment further instability in Lebanon, with a return to civil war only serving to benefit Washington and Tel Aviv as they hope for the sectarian division of the country.

The hands of the US were all over the Tayouneh attack, which came straight out of the Washington/CIA copybook, mirroring its interventions and use of proxy forces to oust governments or prop up its client states in Latin America and across the world.

Geagea’s militia – many of whom have been trained by “Israel” – would be an obvious choice for the US given his previous overtures to Washington, confirmed in a 2008 Wikileaks cable.

He claimed that the Lebanese Forces had as many as 10,000 well-trained soldiers, telling the US embassy: “We can fight against Hezbollah. We just need your support to get arms for these fighters.”

But, speaking in a public address on Monday, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah explained that the Shi’ite movement commands a 100,000 fighters-strong military structure, dwarfing that of the Lebanese Forces. The difference between the two, he pointed out, is that Hezbollah’s forces protect the Lebanese people.

It may be enough to concentrate the minds of the more pragmatic US officials, but the links between Washington and the Lebanese Forces run much deeper than that of Geagea who, despite his delusions of grandeur, remains a marginal figure and is unlikely to be trusted with a leading political role.

Walid Phares, a former leading light in the Lebanese Forces, now acts as a national security advisor and consultant on Middle Eastern politics in the US. Fleeing the country in 1990, he went on to advise the presidential election campaigns of Mitt Romney and then Donald Trump.

During the Lebanese Civil War, Phares told Christian militiamen that they were the vanguard of a war between the West and Islam. He justified the fight against Muslims by saying “we must have our own country, our own state, our own entity, and we have to be separate.”

Despite his peddling of far-right, Islamophobic conspiracy theories, he has rebranded himself as an academic and has testified to international bodies including the European Parliament and UN Security Council on international security matters and the Middle East.

He does not appear to have held any official government post, but his closeness to a former president and his movement in elite circles is clearly a cause for alarm.

The links do not end there. Soon after the shootings, journalist Hosein Mortada claimed to have identified one of the snipers as Shukri Abu Saab – who he said works as a security official at the US embassy.

Perhaps unsurprisingly there has been a blanket media silence over the revelations, while the embassy itself has not responded to the allegations, raising suspicions further.

US ambassador Dorothy Shea has long been accused of using the embassy as an outpost for the imperialist carve-up of Lebanon and opening the country up to the mercy of the World Bank and the IMF.

It may be passed off as a mere coincidence that under secretary of state Victoria Nuland was in the Lebanese capital at the time the ambush took place, pledging an additional $67 million to the country’s armed forces as she demanded economic reform and the need to hold elections as a prerequisite for continued US support.

It also may be a mere coincidence that the Lebanese army changed its narrative of events soon after the US cash boost to appear to blame Hezbollah for its own supporters being shot at. This is despite footage circulating that appears to show a Lebanese soldier shooting at protesters.

But the attempts to destabilize Lebanon came soon after the formation of a new government, ending 13-months of political deadlock, along with the US failure to disarm Hezbollah despite sanctions and other external pressure.

The US is also angered after Hezbollah smashed sanctions imposed by Washington on Iran and Syria, by importing oil to alleviate Lebanon’s fuel crisis. This slap in the face for imperialism was a humiliating defeat, breaking the siege of Lebanon with ease and at the same time rendering the restrictive measures meaningless.

It also exposed the declining power of the US on a global stage, with the dollar at risk of losing its position as the world currency and with it Washington’s ability to control global financial markets.

Solidarity among nations has proved vital in defeating the US, and it is solidarity among the Lebanese people that will help the country rise up once more and consign the likes of Geagea and the Lebanese Forces along with all those who seek to destroy Lebanon to the dustbin of history.

With Fuel from Iran, Hezbollah Steps In Where Lebanon Has Failed

With Fuel from Iran, Hezbollah Steps In Where Lebanon Has Failed

By Ben Hubbard and Hwaida Saad – NYT

Hezbollah said it trucked more than a million gallons of Iranian diesel fuel into Lebanon from Syria on Thursday, celebrating the move as a way of spiting the United States while bringing much-needed aid to a country nearly paralyzed by fuel shortages.

With Lebanon suffering one of the worst economic collapses in modern history, Hezbollah portrayed itself as a national savior, stepping in where the Lebanese government and its Western backers had failed.

Hezbollah supporters lined roads in northeastern Lebanon as dozens of tanker trucks arrived. They waved Hezbollah flags, distributed sweets, and blasted heroic anthems in celebration.

The fuel delivery — which a Hezbollah official said was the first installment of more than 13 million gallons — underscored the severity of Lebanon’s crisis, as well as the government’s failure to address it.

The move appeared to violate American sanctions involving the purchase of Iranian oil, but it was unclear Thursday whether the United States would press the issue. Hezbollah, blacklisted by the United States, is already subject to American sanctions. Although the group is part of Lebanon’s government, it appeared to be acting independently.

The American Embassy in Beirut declined to comment on Thursday. But when Hezbollah announced last month that fuel was on the way from Iran, the American ambassador played down any threat of punitive measures.

“I don’t think anyone is going to fall on their sword if someone’s able to get fuel into hospitals that need it,” the ambassador, Dorothy Shea, told Al Arabiya English.

The fuel arrived as Lebanon struggles through what the World Bank has called one of the world’s worst economic meltdowns since the mid-1800s. Since the fall of 2019, the national currency has lost 90 percent of its value, and prices for many goods have tripled.

Fuel shortages have caused widespread electricity cuts and left many Lebanese waiting in long lines to fill up their cars.

The government bodies charged with overseeing energy imports were not involved with the delivery. The trucks drove from Syria into Lebanon over an open stretch of land, not via an official border crossing, with no customs or security checks. It was unclear whether the imports had any legal authorization or if any taxes would be paid on them.

Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who formed a new cabinet this week and has vowed to work to ease the country’s woes, made no public statement about the fuel shipment on Thursday. Nor did the authorities overseeing the borders.

“The country is facing a serious crisis, so the government couldn’t care less whether the trucks entered legally or illegally,” said Elias Farhat, a retired general in the Lebanese Army. “We’re in an emergency situation.”

The shipment was the first tranche of 13.2 million gallons an Iranian ship delivered to the port of Baniyas, Syria, this week, Ahmed Raya, a Hezbollah media official, said. The rest will take several days to offload and transport to Lebanon.

TankerTrackers.com, a group that tracks global oil shipments, estimated that the ship carried less than eight million gallons.

The fuel crisis set off a showdown of sorts between Hezbollah and its allies and the United States over who could act faster to ease the people’s pain, a competition that Hezbollah won, at least for the day.

Nearly every step of the fuel’s journey was a challenge to the United States, which has imposed sanctions on the purchase of Iranian oil, the Syrian government, Hezbollah and the Hezbollah-linked company that will distribute the fuel inside Lebanon.

Hezbollah’s Secretary General, [His Eminence Sayyed] Hassan Nasrallah, said the fuel had been paid for by unnamed Lebanese businessmen and that most of it would be donated to institutions that included government hospitals, nursing homes, orphanages, the Lebanese Red Cross and organizations involved in water distribution.

Cut-rate fuel will also be sold to private hospitals, medicine factories, bakeries, supermarkets and private electricity providers, he said.

“Our aim is not trade or profit,” Mr. Nasrallah said in a speech on Tuesday. “Our aim is to alleviate the suffering of the people.”

He also said three more Iranian ships, one carrying gasoline and two carrying diesel, were en route to Syria.

Jessica Obeid, an energy policy consultant and nonresident scholar at the Middle East Institute, said that the one million gallons Hezbollah reported bringing on Thursday was not a lot relative to the country’s needs, but that it could help individual institutions.

A hospital generator, for example, might burn about 26 gallons per hour, she said.

Hezbollah has blamed the United States for Lebanon’s economic crisis, claiming that it has put Lebanon under siege.

“This feeds into the image that Hezbollah has won the battle of perseverance against the US siege,” said Mohanad Hage Ali, a fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut.

After Mr. Nasrallah’s announcement, Shea, the United States ambassador, said she was working to put in place another arrangement to help solve Lebanon’s energy crisis. It calls for natural gas from Egypt to be sent to Jordan and transferred to Lebanon via a pipeline through Syria.

A high-level delegation from Lebanon visited Damascus, Syria, this month to discuss the plan, but its details remain unclear, including how long it will take to repair the pipeline, who will pay for it and what fees Syria will charge for letting the gas pass through its territory.

That could pose yet another challenge to the United States, which has sanctions against anyone who does business with the Syrian government.

“I’m not sure how willing the US is to risk placing sanctions on a needy population,” Mr. Hage Ali said. “That would paint the US as being harsh and heavy-handed, and that is a win for Hezbollah.”

The Dogs Bark But the Flotilla Embarks For Lebanon: US Fails To Harm Hezbollah’s Reputation

The Dogs Bark But the Flotilla Embarks For Lebanon: US Fails To Harm Hezbollah’s Reputation

By Mohammad Youssef

Hezbollah’s initiative to bring ships of Iranian fuel to Lebanon has prompted Washington and its allies to kick start actions to sabotage the step or to lessen its positive effects on Lebanon and the Lebanese.

The US administration is heavily involved in the Lebanese affairs and following up attentively daily politics in the country, yet all this to no avail.

The US Congress delegation to Lebanon last week expressed dismay over the Iranian fuel supplies saying that Lebanon is not in need for Iranian petroleum and provoking Saudi Arabia to play a role in blocking Tehran’s help and replacing it by a Saudi one.

In another position, the delegation described Hezbollah as a cancer that should be eradicated. This reflects Washington’s rage and frustration from the influential role the party is playing in Lebanon as well as in the region.

First, the US ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy Shea has mocked the step and did not take it seriously when Hezbollah Secretary General His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah announced it. The head of American diplomacy made consultations and wrongly concluded this is not serious enough, but when Sayyed Nasrallah announced the shipment was on its way she was heavily shocked about her hasty calculations.

Second, the American delegation in an arrogant blackmail threatened there will be sanctions against those who deal with Iran to import oil, and some Lebanese parties mistakenly, or with bad intentions, started to talk about international sanctions though they know for a fact it is only Washington, due to its animosity to the Resistance, and complete bias to ‘Israel’, may impose such sanctions.

Third, the American embassy in Lebanon has become a kind of oil agency that dictates on the distributors the directives on when, where and what quantities of gasoline they would distribute to the stations. According to reports, lists of distributors and distribution places would first arrive to and be approved by the embassy before the process of distribution takes place.

Fourth, the American embassy has recently and repeatedly scorned many of the pro US NGO’S for their failure to confront Hezbollah or to gain influence in the party’s areas. Dorothy Shea expressed her resentment and frustration that not much has been done so far, and it is not enough at all to influence the party followers or supporters.

Fifth, the black propaganda that is being orchestrated and designed in the embassy to distort the party’s reputation, to tarnish its image, and to demonize it in the eyes of the Lebanese and to hold it responsible for all what Lebanon and the Lebanese are going through has come into a complete failure. New plans and more campaigns are in the making now to make up for previous failures.

Sixth, in the same vein, Washington is urging its gulf allies especially Saudi Arabia and UAE to take the initiative from Hezbollah and send supplies to the tormented country so they would earn good reputation that could be later translated into political influence and thus ballots to be casted during the next parliamentary elections.

Seventh, the pro-US gulf countries that are heavily involved in Lebanon and the Lebanese politics are not encouraged enough to send money and supplies because they are not pretty sure this would reach to their proper receivers. In Lebanon, the pro-West, pro-Gulf camp is very notorious for its corruption, malfunction, and its trust unworthiness.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah continues, as planned, its efforts on many levels to alleviate the suffering of the people. Aside from the fuel shipments coming from Iran, the party has launched a series of many vital and very important projects that make people life easier; this includes electricity, water, health and medical facilities, along with streets repair and educational services.

To sum up, Washington with all its tools in the region and the country are waging a relentless war against all those who oppose its hegemony and its imperialist colonialist policies. Thankfully and hopefully, it is losing, and they are winning.

This is going to show us, sooner or later the writing of a new chapter where the US hegemony loses and our people achieve more independence, prosperity and freedom away from Washington sinister plans and conspiracies.

Resistance Shoulders Economic Responsibilities As the US Administration’s Sanctions Cripple Lebanon

Resistance Shoulders Economic Responsibilities As the US Administration’s Sanctions Cripple Lebanon

By Mohammad Youssef

The US economic financial war and tightened blockade against the countries that opposes Washington politics and strategies has become a fixed American policy; Lebanon is no exception in this context.

Even though the US administration designates Lebanon as a friendly state and claims to have the best relations with country pillars especially the army, nonetheless it continues to impose sanctions of every kind on the country thus pushing its people to more suffering and the whole country to collapse.

This is an imminent threat yet it is an opportunity at the same time. Lebanese ought to find alternatives to cope with the miserable situation as a first step and to look into permanent sustainable solutions that render the country independent from the US control and immune to its punishment and sanctions.

The American administration has done everything to prevent Lebanon from becoming a strong state on many levels; the military, political and the economic one.

The Lebanese Army has been subject to continuous pressure and threats to stop US support in case it accepted any kind of military aid from Russia or any other adversary country to Washington.

The Lebanese banks have been and continue to be under US tight hand, every bank has to comply with the American directives. They closed many accounts to Lebanese citizens simply because Washington ordered them.

Washington imposed new series of conditions that the Lebanese banks have to comply with in a flagrant violation to the country’s sovereignty.

At the economic level, Washington has been monitoring Lebanon’s plans and projects. It exercised every pressure possible to prevent Lebanon from starting any meaningful or serious cooperation with Russia, China, Iran or any other country that is not under Washington’s list.

Meanwhile, and as Washington put all these obstacles in front of Lebanon, it did not help in any way or give any alternative plan thus preventing Lebanon from any normal progress or development. Worse than that, because the American administration failed to subjugate the Lebanese will to suit ‘Israeli’ interests and ambitions in our oil and gas, it is imposing sanctions and siege over Lebanon thus adding more suffering to the already miserable situation. Because Lebanon can through its golden equation: resistance, army, and people stand to the ‘Israeli’ might, and has humiliated it in many instances, Washington is mounting pressure and preventing Lebanon’s friends from giving any help. Had America lift its veto we would have seen financial help and support coming.

Because of that, we the Lebanese have a must to do. We should explore every opportunity and do our best to find a way to alleviate our people’s suffering. This is a moral duty. We all should assume our responsibilities and do our obligations and not listen to any threat or care for any pressure wherever it comes from. Our people are under the ruthless American hammer.

We, in the resistance has truly been able to build a very significant military force that made remarkable achievements against one of the mightiest armies in the region and the world. Yes, we made it. Now it is the turn to do something in the economic front, to contribute to helping our country survive, develop and thrive. The fuel ships coming from Iran is the one step in a thousand-mile journey. It has started and we will make it in economy as we made it in military.

Former LF MP to Al-Ahed: Iran is A Friend, Lebanon Needs Actual Help Not Words

Former LF MP to Al-Ahed: Iran is A Friend, Lebanon Needs Actual Help Not Words

By Sara Raad

After the disarray surrounding the recent stances voiced by Lebanese businessman and Member of the Parliament who was previously labelled as a “Lebanese Forces” [LF] affiliate, Cesar Maalouf,  al-Ahed News was briefed by the Zahlé MP who asserted that he doesn’t belong the LF Party, and noted that: “I don’t have a ‘Lebanese Forces’ card, I am an ally of this party in Zahlé, and they have been tolerating my words over the past three years; this time, however, they didn’t tolerate what I’ve said, and they blocked me from LF WhatsApp groups.”

Maalouf pointed to that the background of his stances was neither political nor electoral: “I don’t speak politics, and I don’t care for my political position; however, any country that helps Lebanon today is a friend of it. Friends indeed are friends in need. And today, it is clear who is Lebanon’s friends and who is its enemy. The friend is the one that supports Lebanon. In this case I am not speaking about axes, but instead about the conditions of people waiting in front of gas stations, pharmacies and bakeries. Lebanon is at the last gasp, heading towards the brink, and we are just watching.”

Regarding the Christian community’s reaction to Hezbollah’s initiative to import oil from Iran, Maalouf explained that “Christians, just like Sunnis and Shia, don’t care who is the MP, minister, or president, they only care for their dignity and that of their children and their livelihood. They do care for a question which is: Where is the country heading to? And how would the solution be?”

In response to al-Ahed’s question about the reason that pushed an LF-categorized member of the parliament to confront the US Ambassador, which is known to be the patron of the ‘Lebanese Forces’ party, Maalouf answered: “If the Lebanese Forces have a patron, I [myself] am not under anybody’s patronage, I address the US ambassador to tell her: Do not undermine, but help this sinking country. Do offer actual help to the Lebanese Army, or even help improve the supply of electricity. Do not impose a veto on us for drilling oil. We need not slogans or words of support, but rather an actual support.”

In the context of being accused of attacking Saudi Arabia, Maalouf made clear: “I didn’t attack Saudi Arabia. On the contrary, I asked them and all Arab countries not to abandon Lebanon and to help the country and support it. We do thank whoever helps us.” He then underscored that Iran is not a hostile country, it is rather a friendly one. The only enemy is the ‘Israeli’ enemy.

Maalouf then asked: “When was oil categorized as Iranian, Gulf, or American? Does oil belong to a certain sect? Did we ever ask about the sect of oil at gas stations? We shouldn’t sectarianize everything to abet the Christians.”

When asked about his political future, MP Cesar Maalouf affirmed that in the meantime, he doesn’t care about politics, but about “the pain and suffering of people.” The Lebanese lawmaker finally called for a speedy government formation not to have the country being taken to the unknown and to chaos, and to stop this breakdown.
