54 years after his martyrdom, Guevara’s historic visit to the Palestinian Gaza in 1959 continues to stand as a token of resilience for liberation and resistance movements in Palestine and the world.

Mohammed was 13 years old when Marxist revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara paid his first visit to the Gaza Strip that was, at the time, administered by Egypt.

Little did he know that he will become a resistance icon and nicknamed “Gaza’s Guevara” for his tremendous role in the resistance against the Israeli occupation in Gaza and his continuous revolt against injustice and colonialism, as well as his ability to hide and confuse the enemy.

Originally, Mohammed al-Aswad, or “Gaza’s Guevara” was born in the coastal city of Haifa in 1946. Later, the boy and his family sought refuge after they were displaced from their city as a result of the 1948 Nakba and eventually ended up in a refugee camp in Gaza.

Al-Aswad grew up to become a resistance activist against “Israel,” and was jailed for two years. After his release in 1970, he joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and gradually got promoted to commander of the PFLP military wing in the Gaza Strip.

During that time, he focused on training and educating resistance forces, as well as organizing demonstrations and strikes against the occupation, applying Martyr Bassel al-Araj’s doctrine: “If you don’t want to be engaged (in fighting oppression), your intellect is pointless.”

His integrity made Moshe Dayan, former Israeli occupation Minister of Security, say, “We run Gaza by day, and Guevara and his comrades run it at night.”

Three years later, “Gaza’s Guevara” was martyred during a heroic battle in the Strip.

Ernesto Che Guevara’s visit to Gaza

Martyr Mohammed al-Aswad’s story is vivid proof of the significant and strong relationship between Che Guevara and the Palestinian cause, which Gaza has become the symbol of.

In fact, Che Guevara’s visit to the Strip on June 18, 1959, at the invitation of the late Egyptian President and leader Gamal Abdel-Nasser, came to establish a state of solidarity and harmony between Cuba and the Palestinian cause.

His visit to Gaza transformed the cause from regional to global and reflected his famous phrase: “Solidarity is a condition that must always be practiced.”

The Israeli occupation of Palestine and the systematic ethnic cleansing against its population triggered the establishment of Palestinian Resistance forces and the emergence of freedom fighters, legitimized by Abdel-Nasser, who was considered a leader against colonialism and imperialism.

To break the determination and resilience of the Resistance, Israeli occupation forces, led by Ariel Sharon, Prime Minister from 2001 till 2006, continuously attacked the Gaza Strip and its refugee camps, committing horrible massacres against many Palestinians and Egyptian soldiers, with no reaction from the international community that simply turned a blind eye to the Israeli atrocities.

A historic visit by all means

Che’s visit came in support of Palestinian national liberation and revolutionary movements against imperialism and colonization.

It was an exceptional visit that was met enthusiastically by resistance leaders and Palestinians.

He was accompanied to al-Bureij Camp, where Israelis committed some of the most horrible massacres, and saw the poverty and hardship that Palestinians were living in, advised Palestinian leaders to pursue the path of resistance, which they tread through their people’s resilience and steadfastness.

During the visit, he addressed the camp leader Mustafa Abu Midyan, saying, “You should show me what you have done to liberate your country. Where are the training camps? Where are the arms manufacturing factories? Where are the people’s mobilization centers?” With these words, Guevara was trying to lay out the foundations necessary for any resistance movement.

At the same time, he urged Palestinian refugees to continue their struggle in order to liberate their land from the occupation, offering to supply the Palestinian resistance with arms and training.

In an interview for Al Mayadeen, his daughter, Dr. Aleida Guevara, quoted her father as saying, “The Middle East is considered, with all of its contradictions, a region that is boiling, and it is not possible to predict how far the war between Israel – which is supported by imperialists – and progressive countries in the region will go.”

And the impact still echoes

Following the historic visit, Cuba offered scholarships, granted citizenships, and organized many conferences all in support of Palestine and the Palestinian people.

In addition, the island of Cuba was one of the first countries to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization when it was founded in 1964.

Soon after his visit, the Marxist doctor became an icon for the Palestinian resistance and fighters and a symbol of revolution, especially for leftist movements.

Hasta Siempre

On this occasion, on the 54th anniversary of his martyrdom, it goes without saying that Che’s resistance, integrity, and solidarity is what we are in need of to liberate the oppressed nations, such as Palestine, Yemen, and any country in the world from Western imperialism, colonialism, and military occupation. His memory still brings forth devoted revolutionary resistance figures such “Gaza’s Guevara”, Mohammed al-Aswad.

Armed with his forwardness and valor, he would have been on the frontlines in Gaza fighting the Israeli siege. He would have been digging, using a tool as simple as a spoon, alongside the other six, the freedom tunnel that liberates the whole of Palestine from the operators of the Gilboa Prison.

Aleida Guevara to Al Mayadeen: “We Must Fight Alongside the Palestinians, as Che Believed”

The revolutionary commander’s daughter spoke about a multitude of subjects on her father’s 54th assassination anniversary, notably the Palestinian cause and the dangers of Arab division.

Aleida Guevara, daughter of Che

“My father would have always stood on the side of oppressed nations,” said Elaida Guevara, daughter of famed revolutionary Che Guevara on the 54th anniversary of his assassination.

In an interview with Al Mayadeen, Aleida revealed her belief that had her father remained alive, things would have been different in Bolivia and Argentina, as he most assuredly would not have surrendered due to his belief of “fight for the oppressed or die fighting.”

Che’s visit to the Middle-East was also recalled, with Aleida describing his conscious realization of the boiling nature of the region due to colonization, the harsh circumstances surrounding its populations, and the endless pressures performed by major powers trying to steal its resources, “notably its oil.”

Linking the current divisions of the Arab world with the Marxist revolutionary’s experience in Cuba, she stressed the importance of “people’s unification”, notably as the sectarian rifts sowed by European colonial powers are dangerously threatening the Arab World’s unity and ability to progress.

On Palestine

In this context, Aleida mentioned her father’s visit to Palestine in 1959. She decreed her love for Palestine, whom her father visited which she considers not only to be a historical nation but a major cause, as she decried “Israel’s” plan to colonize the whole of the Middle East and not simply the Palestinian lands illegally handed over by the UN.

Further diving into the cause, Che’s daughter assured that Lebanon, Syria, and Iran are the only regional countries actively championing a righteous stance towards Palestine, whilst the rest appear to apply a palliative treatment. She mentioned Cuba in this context, which despite being distant from the region, still recently severed all diplomatic relations with “Israel” in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Regarding the 6 Palestinian prisoners who liberated themselves from the maximum-security Gilboa prison, Aleida considered the operation an “unusual heroism.”

“If you go to the South of Lebanon, you will find remains of Israeli prisons, where you can see with your own eyes what an Israeli prison means, let alone one with extreme security measures,” she added.

She called for the commandment of the prisoners, whose deed should be applauded, supported, and preserved given the historical nature of their struggle, notably under the occupation’s inhumane prison conditions.

Aleida Guevara concluded that the Palestinian people should be supported and that “we must fight with them side by side,” which is an extension of Che’s motto of “solidarity not only being the act raising our voices, but also coming to the aid of our comrades when they need us.”

El Commandante’s daughter has previously sent a letter to Al Mayadeen, on the occasion of the launch of its new website in English, in which she urged the world and the website to “defend the truth above anything else,” and stressing that “correct information, truthful information are essential, and that is what Al Mayadeen does with the stories it gives us every day.”

Amir Abdollahian in Beirut: Iran Strongly Backs Lebanese Army, Resistance

By Staff, Agencies

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian confirmed that “friendly and deep” relations with Lebanon.

He further vowed that the Islamic Republic will continue to strongly support the Lebanese people, army, and resistance movement.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will powerfully stand by its allies in the region and we will continue our support for the Lebanese independence, security and sovereignty,” Amir Abdollahian stated upon his arrival in Beirut on Thursday.

Amir Abdollahian pointed to a social media campaign launched ahead of his visit in appreciation of Iran’s assistance to Lebanon in breaking the United States’ economic siege, saying Tehran has even “better new offers” if the Lebanese officials make a request.

He further underscored that Tehran also stood ready to “continue on the previous path,” referring to recent energy sales to Lebanon, as long as Beirut kept up the demand, and also lend a helping hand to the Arab nation in other fields.

“This trip is indicative of deep and friendly ties between the two countries, and we support Lebanon’s army, people, and resistance with a strong voice,” he said.

In parallel, the top Iranian diplomat also extended his congratulations to the Lebanese people on the formation of a new government in the Arab country, following a 13-month-long political stalemate.

Heading a delegation, Amir Abdollahian arrived in Beirut on Thursday on a first visit to the country since his appointment, after wrapping up a trip to Russia. He is scheduled to hold talks with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, parliament speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib.

He also plans to meet representatives of Palestinian factions and groups at the Iranian Embassy in Beirut.

Yehya Sinwar, As Sayyed Nasrallah, Knows the Secrets of the ‘Israeli’ Society

Yehya Sinwar, As Sayyed Nasrallah, Knows the Secrets of the ‘Israeli’ Society

Elior Levi, a Zionist writer in “Yedioth Ahronoth” newspaper, narrated parts of the biography of the seven Palestinian resistance men who regained their freedom in a swap deal with the ‘Israeli’ enemy in 2011.

According to the writer, these seven men turned to a great challenge to the ‘Israeli’ security institution over years, affecting the life of hundreds of thousands of Zionist settlers.

Levi claimed that the seven resistance men are “The main perpetrators of terrorism against “Israel””, saying that they became within ten years the tip of the spear and the military wing of “Hamas”, after they were supposed to put an end to their lives in the ‘Israeli’ prison.

Levi cites the colonel who is the stand-by of doctor Michael Milstein who took charge of the so-called “Presidency of the Palestinian Arena” in the research brigade of the ‘Israeli’ intelligence section during the period of the deal, quoting his saying “Gilad Shalit Prisoner Swap has contributed to the improvement of Hamas’ potentials of decision-making and strengthening ties between its military wing and its strategic [political] wing.” He added that “the entrance of Yehya Al-Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza Strip, to the ring has made a giant leap for the movement and “contributed to the improvement of its military capabilities and enhancing its status in the Palestinian region, as a part of the group that integrated the military capabilities and the strategic thinking.”

The writer lists the seven main resistance men of the Shalit agreement in Yedioth, talking first about Al-Sinwar, whom he said managed to change the geopolitical situation between Gaza and ‘Israel’, after he had become the strongest figure in Gaza, thanks to his leadership charisma and ability of maneuvering between the political efforts aiming at settlement and achievement of tranquility, and the gradual escalation of Tel Aviv depletion and standing behind the return marches.

“Al-Sinwar is the man behind the improvement of the economic situation in Gaza in the last ten years. But he was never reluctant or afraid of giving up the conveniences offered by ‘Israel’ to relieve the siege for the sake of Al-Quds and launching the “Guard of Fences “[Operation Al-Quds Sword] … He’s just like [His Eminence Sayyed Hassan] Nasrallah [the Secretary General of Hezbollah], as he knew the ‘Israeli’ society and identified its weaknesses”, he adds.

The second name in the Zionist’s writer list is Toufiq Abo Naim. Levi points out that Abo Naim took charge of the security services four years after he was released. He managed to develop the security services and enhance their potentials, and that helped in thwarting the attempts of turning on Hamas and the pursuit of collaborators.

According to Levi, the third figure is Rouhi Mushtaha who is considered as one of the most influencing characters in Gaza and the outside, and an eagle in Hamas, being a member in its political office. He was a founder of the internal security service of Hamas in the nineties and a member of the delegation sent by Hamas to negotiate the ‘Israeli’ regime with an Egyptian mediation to reach a settlement agreement.

Zaher Jabarin is the fourth figure in the list of the Zionist writer. Levi says that the path taken by this man since his release till reaching his current position as a deputy of the leader of Hamas in the West Bank had been long. He was one of the founders of the military wing of the movement there. He also enlisted students for the military wing of the organization when he was a student in An-Najah National University in Nablus, and one of these students is Yehya Ayyash who was highly skilled in making the improvised explosive devices used by the self-sacrifice martyrs.

According to Levi, Jabarin is currently in charge of the financial file of Hamas and he’s a deputy of its leader in the West Bank. He also supports the return to self-sacrifice operations and for enhancing relationships with Iran. Besides, he was among the delegation sent by the movement to Iran thanks to his good relations with Al-Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard.

Abdurrahman Ghneimat is the fifth name mentioned by Levi. The writer says that Ghneimat is now chief of Hamas cells in Surif village near al-Khalil. He was a member of the cell that executed many operations that are still engraved in the ‘Israeli’ memory, one of which was kidnapping the soldier Sharon Edri and the operation of Afrofo café in Tel Aviv.

The sixth name is Jihad Yaghmour who participated in the operation of kidnapping the soldier Nahshon Waxman in 1994 in Al-Quds region. He is now a representative of Hamas in Turkey thanks to his ability of building relationships with the political and security leadership, as mentioned in Levi’s article.

The seventh and last main name in the writer’s list in Yedioth is Moussa Dudin, who started his career as a student in the Muslim college in An-Najah National University in Nablus and became over years a member of the delegation sent by Hamas to negotiate ‘Israel’ with an Egyptian mediation to come to a new prisoners swap deal. He is also close to Saleh Al-Arouri, the deputy of the head of the political office in Hamas.

Al-Quds International Institution: Al-Aqsa Mosque Enters a Critical Stage of Identity Obliteration

Al-Quds International Institution: Al-Aqsa Mosque Enters a Critical Stage of Identity Obliteration

Translated by Staff

Al-Quds International Institution asserted that the al-Aqsa Holy Mosque has entered a critical stage of identity obliteration as Jewish rituals are being imposing there.

The international institution considered that the responsibility of defending al-Aqsa implies urgent duties on the people of al-Quds and the occupied land as well as the Resistance and Arab and Muslim nations.

The institution pointed out that the al-Aqsa Holy Mosque has witnessed throughout the current Jewish holiday season an unprecedented assault since its annexation in 1967. That’s because extremist “temple” groups and the occupation regime are moving forward in implementing the agenda of the “morally founding the temple” by imposing Jewish rituals in al-Aqsa.

“Today, our duty is to transport our cry to the Arab and Muslim countries and their vital forces that al-Aqsa Mosque has entered a stage of identity obliteration, and the battle over al-Aqsa is a battle of existence, either we are in it or not. This requires us to direct the interest and energy towards defending al-Aqsa and to bear responsibilities towards it in such a practical way that surpasses statements and verbal stances”, the institution added.

The international institution appealed to the stationed people, al-Quds residents and the citizens of the 1948 occupied territory and the West Bank, saying that al-Aqsa has become vulnerable more than ever before. “But your will has proved with real evidence that it’s louder and sharper than any linebacker to be resorted to in defending al-Aqsa, for you are the owners of the five holy blessings that had always stopped the enemy from  going too far”, it added.

It further said, “It’s your persistence and defense of al-Quds and Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood that called to action the other elements of strength and deterrence in the blessed Operation al-Quds Sword”.

The institution also urged them to “renew their determination and keep their pledge to al-Aqsa, for the nation and Allah Almighty are with them, and al-Aqsa was the trigger of conflict for the last three decades, and it seems it will remain this way until it becomes the trigger for the battle to freedom, God willing”.

It also called upon the resistance everywhere to set a political and military strategy that places the attack on Al-Aqsa in the heart of the escalation and appeasement equation within the available resources.

“The 19-day-period of the cease of incursions to al-Aqsa Holy Mosque, achieved by the Operation al-Quds Sword, was the longest period of incursion cessation since 21/8/2003. It made the occupation think twice about repeating incursions and the extent of attack, fearing the repercussions of the response”, it added.

It stressed that “the responsibility for al-Aqsa being a Muslim sanctity rests on the shoulders of the nation with all its peoples and generations. Its safety and liberation is our responsibility, as is maintaining Christian sanctities and the Arab identity of al-Quds.”

“The current attack against al-Aqsa makes it necessary to launch a popular movement to support and help the stationed people, to lobby governments to make them assume their responsibilities towards al-Aqsa and to undermine the normalization that adds legitimacy to the attack against al-Aqsa and forms a contract of selling it,” it said.

It added, “We call for the popular movements and groups to consider the safety of al-Aqsa and al-Quds as their priority and center of attention, and never allow to let such a blatant attack go unnoticed without a popular, effective movement against it.”

Palestine Bids Farewell to Five Heroes Martyred While Confronting ‘Israeli’ Occupation Forces

By Staff, Agencies

The occupied West Bank bade farewell to five of its young heroes who were shot dead by ‘Israeli’ occupation troops after intense confrontations that erupted in at least four towns following overnight arrest raids.

According to official Palestinian news agency Wafa, Zionist military forces stormed the northern town of Burqin near al-Quds in the predawn hours of Sunday, and surrounded a home before breaking in and detaining its owner. The detainee was identified as Mohammad Zirini.

The raid prompted skirmishes between angry town residents and Zionist occupation troops who fired live rounds, killing two protesters and injuring at least four others.

One of the two Palestinian martyrs was identified as 22-year-old Osama Yaser Soboh.

Confrontations also erupted shortly after midnight in Kafr Dan village northwest of Jenin as Zionist occupation troops raided the area, detaining at least two Palestinians.

On Saturday night, the occupation regime’s undercover forces kidnapped two young Palestinian men from their car in a fuel station near Jenin.

Furthermore, three Palestinians were shot dead by the Zionist forces in an attack which targeted a house in the village of Biddu.

Witnesses told Wafa that ‘Israeli’ occupation military troops surrounded the building and fired gunshots and grenades at it. Loud explosions were heard during the raid.

Tensions have been rising in the occupied territories following the heroic escape of six Palestinian detainees from high-security Gilboa Prison earlier this month.

The six heroes tunneled their way out through their cell’s drainage system, dealing a serious blow to the Zionist regime’s prestige through bringing the condition of Palestinian prisoners to international attention even though they were rearrested later.

The Zionist occupation regime’s so-called Public Security Minister Omer Bar-Lev on Friday published the names of the committee members to investigate the escape of six Palestinians from the high-security Gilboa prison in northern ‘Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories earlier this month.

All six Palestinians heroes were eventually recaptured following a massive manhunt involving the Zionist Police, Shin Bet [Zionist Security Agency] and the Zionist military.

The government commission will be headed by retired judge Menachem Finkelstein, who served as the Tel Aviv regime’s Military Advocate General from 2000 to 2004.

Professor Efrat Shoham will also be on the committee. She served as chair of the ‘Israeli’ Criminology Association and serves as head of the Department of Criminology at the Ashkelon Academic College.

Finkelstein and Shoham will be joined by Arik “Harris” Barbing, a former senior official in the Shin Bet, who served as head of the security agency’s cyber division.

Six Palestinian resistance detainees tunneled their way out through a hole that wasn’t sealed for seven years while the prison guard near their cells was sleeping, the watch tower was unmanned, no one answered the phone, and the structure’s blueprint was published online a year earlier.

The jailbreak embarrassed the Zionist security establishment but delighted Palestinians who see resistance members jailed by the occupation regime as heroes in the struggle for liberating Palestine.

Israel’s Army Chief: Raiding Jenin Could Become Inevitable Choice

Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army, Aviv Kochavi, yesterday warned that raiding the West Bank city of Jenin could become an inevitable choice, Israeli TV Channel 12 reported.

Al Maydan News Agency reported the Israeli TV channel as quoting Kochavi saying the Israeli army would raid the city to “purge” the armed Palestinian factions.

Kochavi expected that one of the Palestinian escapees could have reached and entered Jenin, and could be receiving assistance from there.

He said that the investigations with Zakaria Al Zubeidi, who was recaptured, revealed that the escapees planned to go to Jenin.

“If we became sure that they arrived in Jenin, a large amount of the army would be ready to raid the city, rearrest them and put them in prison again even if this affected the rest of the West Bank,” he said.

He added that if the two remaining escapees are found to be in a different West Bank town, the same scenario would be implemented in that area.

Kochavi said that the Palestinian Authority has become weak in the occupied West Bank and Israel would not allow the Palestinian organizations to “raise their heads.”

The iconic spokesperson for the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, pledged today to free four Palestinian political prisoners who were recaptured by Israel days after their daring escape.

“There will be no new (prisoner) exchange deal without the four heroic prisoners that were rearrested by the (Israeli) occupation,” Abu Obeida said in a recorded speech early Saturday.

Israel has announced that it has recaptured the four Palestinian freedom fighters. One of the recaptured political prisoners, Zakarya Zubeidi, appeared with a disfigured face, signs of Isreali violence that accompanied his arrest.

Abu Obeida reassured Palestinians that the rearrest of the political prisoners is not enough to hide what he describes as “the great shame that has befallen the enemy and its institutions”.

Abu Obeida described the daring escape as another example of the “fragility of the security of the enemy”.

Weaker Than a Spider Web: The Loss of the “Epic” Intelligence

Weaker Than a Spider Web: The Loss of the “Epic” Intelligence

By Mohammad Sleem

Beirut – A “miserable failure”, that’s how the former commander of Gilboa prison described the covert operation led by the 6 Palestinian prisoners who escaped the high security prison north of occupied Palestine.

Gilboa prison is considered one of the most important and highly ranked security prisons in occupied Palestine. It was built in 2004 and designed with the help of Irish specialists and only includes prominent Palestinian prisoners.

“Israeli” media quoted the former commander saying that the escape of the 6 Palestinian detainees was shameful and the most dangerous accident that could happen. On the morning of the escape, prison guards and members of the investigation team were in a state of shock.

Severe responses from senior officers and politicians in the “Israeli” regime to the operation lead to serious questions from “Israeli” media outlets on the ability and the coherence of the regime’s security institutions, in the light of the most recent event.

The “Israeli” entity’s KAN broadcaster announced that the authorities will investigate with the prison service members who took unusual decisions, in addition to huge suspicions regarding cooperation with the prisons.

Another “Israeli” news outlet, The times of “Israel” described the jail break as one of the worst escapes in the “Israeli” entity’s history.

To make things worse for the security institutions, the “Israeli” daily Haaretz said the prison blueprint was previously published online, making it available to the public. It further added that during this time it wasn’t clear if this highly dangerous threat helped the prisoners in their plan.

Moreover, the “Israeli” daily stated that the security failure regarding the prison service administration is well known and clear for a long time. To rub salt into the wound, no precautions had been taken to prevent any possible threat or act done by the Palestinian prisoners.

And with another shocking news, Haaretz declared that the prison warden on shift during the prison break, fell asleep.

On the political level, “Israeli” Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that the incident might affect the front lines on “all our borders”, and not only on internally.

After the accident, the “Israeli” army spokesman announced that army forces will be increased to three battalions and seven armored companies to widen the search operations.

Commenting on the breakout, commander of Hermon Prison Commissioner Yariv Cohen, in an interview with the “Israeli” Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, classified the Islamic Jihad movement – to which five of the six prisoners belong to – as “a very sophisticated group”, adding that “there is no doubt that we need to understand why we did not pick up on this intelligence-wise”.

Based on the above-mentioned, an immense intelligence failure occurred in the “Israeli” regime’s different security sectors, and it’s one of its kind that the great escape by the Palestinian prisoners was considered a historic operation and one of the smartest, although it is not the first.

All in all, the Palestinian detainees’ historic breakout with all the surrounding factors, including the time taken to dig the ten-meter-long tunnel and the tools used to do it, in addition to the security level at the Gilboa Prison, proved that no matter how heavily equipped the “Israeli” regime gets and with more advanced human resources, it will remain weaker than a spider web.

Why Israel’s Gilboa Prison Break has Palestanians Celebrating

September 10th, 2021

Opportunities for Palestinians to celebrate as a nation are few and far between, so when news broke of the escape of six high-profile Palestinian prisoners from one of Israel’s most notorious prisons, people took to the streets in triumph.

GILBOA PRISON, PALESTINE — It is said that Palestinians are the most incarcerated people in the world. Rarely does one find a Palestinian who has not been a victim of the Israeli prison system and when one does find one such person, he or she will have a sibling, parent or another close relative who serves or has served time in an Israeli prison. Opportunities for Palestinians to celebrate as a nation are few and far between. When the news broke of the escape of six high-profile Palestinian prisoners from one of Israel’s most secure prisons, it was a reason to celebrate. This was a reason not only for Palestinians to celebrate but indeed for all people who believe in justice and freedom.

This escape, which Reuters described as a “Hollywood-style escape,” was a daring and courageous operation. It had Palestinians celebrating in the streets and provides the Palestinian Authority and the countries that surround Palestine an opportunity to demonstrate to whom they are loyal. The world will see whether they will support the efforts of the oppressor to catch the freed political prisoners or support the cause of freedom and help these six brave men find safety.

The prison

Gilboa Prison is located in northeastern Palestine in what used to be known as the Baisan District. It is a beautiful and very fertile region and home to some of Israel’s most prosperous settlements, many of them established prior to 1948.

According to Addameer, the Palestinian prisoner support and human rights association, Gilboa Prison was established in 2004 next to Shatta Prison in the Baisan area. It is a high-security prison described as “the most intensely secured of its kind where occupation authorities incarcerate Palestinian prisoners.”

According to a report by Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, at Gilboa Prison every group of six “security prisoners” is housed in cells that are 22 square meters (c. 230 square feet) in size, including a shared toilet and bathroom. The cells contain three bunk beds and the inmates are unable to maintain social distancing. The beds are situated less than 1.5 meters from each other and the top bunks are positioned just 80 centimeters (c. 30 inches) above the bottom bunks.

The Israeli security apparatus fails

The ineptitude of the Israeli security apparatus is well known, although it is not often publicized. Now the entire Israeli security system is desperately trying to come to grips with this breach of security and enormously embarrassing failure. The circumstances of the escape seep slowly to the press and show an enormous hole, no pun intended, in the system. The few details that have emerged through the Israeli press reveal human error, carelessness, and perhaps even the help of officers within the prison, which all led to the success of the prison break.

Initially, it was reported that the tunnel through which the prisoners escaped was structural, or part of the prison. Later, it was reported that it had apparently been dug over a five-month period, and then the reports claimed it took an entire year of planning. Then, the guard who was supposed to look over the area where the tunnel entrance was located was asleep while on duty and the prison guards at the command center, where several computer screens show images of every inch of the prison, were just not paying attention.

To add to that, prison authorities were not aware that the prisoners had escaped until several hours after the escape. It began when a civilian called the police and reported seeing “suspicious” looking men crossing a field. It took a couple of hours before the prison was notified and then apparently some time elapsed before the prison authorities realized that the six men were gone. In other words, the prisoners had a head start of several hours before authorities began searching for them, which means they could be anywhere in, or even out of, the country.

As these words are being written, several days have passed since the prisoners escaped and all that the Israeli authorities have been able to accomplish is to ignite riots within the various prisons that hold Palestinians and intense riots throughout Palestine. Jenin, which is the home of all six men, is particularly celebratory and the Jenin Refugee Camp is sealed off by armed Palestinian resistance fighters, keeping the Israeli military and others who might collaborate with the Israeli authorities out.

It has also been reported in the Israel press that four of the six had tried to escape before and were categorized as “high risk of escape.” Still, they were placed together in the same cell.

The Six

Zakaria Zubeidi is the one Palestinian prisoner who is well known both locally and internationally. He is featured in the film Arna’s Children. The movie was directed by Juliano Mer-Khamis, who documented a number of promising child actors in a theatre group he founded with his mother, Arna, at the Jenin refugee camp during the First Intifada. Juliano returned to Jenin Refugee Camp in April 2002 in the aftermath of an Israeli massacre in the camp to see what happened to the children he knew and loved. He found that all but one were killed; the lone survivor was Zakaria Zubeidi, who is featured in the film as a child and then as a commander of Palestinian resistance in the camp.

Zubeidi has been in and out of the Israeli prisons and has survived several assassination attempts. I recall seeing him speak after a showing of the film in Jenin during the Jenin Film Festival several years ago. He was arrested in 2019 and has not yet been sentenced.

Mahmoud Abdullah Ardah, 46, from Jenin, was the leader of the Gilboa Prison escape operation, according to a piece in Middle East Eye that quotes the Palestinian armed group al-Quds Brigades. Ardah was arrested in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison on charges of being a member of the al-Quds Brigades and for his involvement in the killing of Israeli soldiers. He reportedly tried to escape in 2014 from Shatta prison by digging a tunnel, but his plan was unsuccessful.

Mohamed Qassem Ardah, 39, is from Jenin and was arrested in 2002 and sentenced to life in prison. He too was charged with belonging to al-Quds Brigades and being involved in the killing of Israeli soldiers.

Yaqoub Mahmoud Qadri — 49, from Bir al-Basha, Jenin — was arrested in 2003 and sentenced to life in prison on charges of belonging to al-Quds Brigades and killing an Israeli settler. In 2014, he and a number of other prisoners, including Mahmoud Abdullah Ardah, tried to escape from Shatta prison through a tunnel, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

Ayham Nayef Kamanji, 35, is from Kafr Dan. He was arrested in 2006 and sentenced to life in prison on charges of killing an Israeli settler and participating in other armed activities against Israeli targets.

Munadil Yaqoub Nfeiat, 26, is from Ya’bad, southwest of Jenin. He has been jailed without charge since 2019.

The international community must come out in defense of these six men and demand that they be safe from the Israeli authorities. Furthermore, guarantees must be given for the safety of their relatives and the communities these men are from, which will undoubtedly be the victims of more Israeli violence.

Security Failures, Sleeping Guard: How Did Six Palestinians Manage to Escape Heavily-guarded ‘Israeli’ Jail?

Security Failures, Sleeping Guard: How Did Six Palestinians Manage to Escape Heavily-guarded ‘Israeli’ Jail?

By Staff, Haaretz

The embarrassing ‘Israeli’ failure on the security level inside the occupation entity’s prisons continued to be the subject to mock the Zionist establishment by its own media.

In a commentary published by ‘Israeli’ Haaretz newspaper, Josh Breiner asked: What happened at Gilboa Prison? Why was there an open space under the prison? And where did the prisoners go? This is what we know so far about the high-profile prison break.

The escape of six security prisoners from Gilboa Prison on Monday exposed a raft of failures in the work of the Prison Service. This begins with senior officials who apparently learned no lessons from an attempted breakout in the same prison seven years ago, as well as the failure to operate electronic measures where required, and the guard who fell asleep in the watchtower. Haaretz is attempting to sort through these issues and raise questions that need to be answered so that this does not recur.

What happened?

Between 1:20 and 1:40 A.M. on the night between Sunday and Monday, Rosh Hashana eve, six security prisoners escaped from cell No. 5 in Wing 2 of the prison in Jezreel Valley. The six escaped through a tunnel they dug from within their cell, apparently over the last six months. All the escaped convicts – five members of Islamic Jihad and one Fatah member – are residents of the nearby Jenin area. On the eve of the break, two of these prisoners were moved to the cell from which the escape took place, so they could break out as well.

It is believed the prisoners removed a metal grate that was welded into the floor of the toilet and then discovered an empty space underneath it, created when the prison was built. This space led to an area which was 2.5 meters [8.2 feet] outside the prison wall, which was close to their cell. The length of the tunnel they passed through is 30 meters, at the end of which they dug an escape shaft.

A preliminary investigation shows that the prisoners emerged one by one, waiting beside the shaft without being noticed by guards or surveillance cameras. The guard on a tower right above the shaft had fallen asleep.

At this point, the six men started moving away from the prison. Some of them were spotted by a taxi driver when they crossed a road. The driver called police at around 1:50 A.M., which led police to alert the Prison Service 25 minutes later.

Only around 3:30 A.M. was it discovered that the prisoners had escaped. Suspicions have it that the prisoners coordinated their escape with people outside the prison, who came to the area assisted by cellphones. According to police investigations, after walking three kilometers they reached a vehicle and left the area. The Shin Bet and police believe that the prisoners, or some of them, reached the village of Na’ura, where they stayed for 20 minutes, changing clothes and buying food.

Where did they go?

The main concern of police is that the six are still in “Israeli” territory, hidden in houses or outdoors, waiting for an opportunity to flee. The fact that four of the men have life sentences raises concerns that they will try to carry out resistance operations.

Another possibility is that the six have fled to the West Bank. They know the area well, especially the nearby Jenin area from which they came. Four of them have been in prison for over 20 years, so the chances that they will stay in the ‘Israeli’-occupied territories, which they’re not familiar with, are less likely.

A preferred option for ‘Israel’ is that they reached hiding places in the West Bank, given the security and intelligence control ‘Israel’s’ forces have in that area. However, apprehending them there will almost certainly entail violent confrontations with the ‘Israeli’ military personnel.

Another possibility that police believe to be highly likely is that the prisoners fled to Jordan or another country. That would make it harder for ‘Israel’ to return them to prison.

Why was there an open space under the prison?

Gilboa Prison was built in 2004 near the older Shata Prison, to allow for incarcerating a large number of security prisoners during the second intifada. Due to the need to erect it hastily, construction was expedited so that the prison’s wards were built on concrete pillars, with open spaces underneath. The prison’s engineering plan was published on the site of the architects who had planned it. It’s not known if the prisoners used this knowledge, but this is clearly a security failure of the Prison Service, which did not remove the plan once it went online.

What sanctions were imposed on other security prisoners?

After the breakout, the conditions of 4,000 security prisoners were further restricted. Thus, the time they are allowed to be in the yard was reduced from four hours to one hour a day. Many searches have been conducted in their cells, with Islamic Jihad prisoners moved to other wings, despite the ideological and religious differences between prisoners, something that is creating a lot of tension.

On Wednesday Islamic Jihad prisoners torched their cells at Ketziot and Ramon prisons, clashing with guards. They were protesting the intent to move them to other prisons following the escape from Gilboa.

Islamic Jihad Warns “Israel” against “Collective Punishment” of Palestinian Inmates

Islamic Jihad Warns “Israel” against “Collective Punishment” of Palestinian Inmates

By Staff, Agencies

The Islamic Jihad strongly warned the “Israeli” regime against trying to punish other Palestinian prisoners over the recent escape of six inmates from a maximum-security “Israeli” jail.

The Palestinian resistance movement issued the warning in a statement on Tuesday after Palestinian sources revealed that the regime was administering “collective punishment” to prisoners, including some of Jihad’s senior figures, after the jailbreak.

The prisoners, five of whom belong to the group, escaped the Gilboa Prison in the northern part of the occupied territories through an underground tunnel. The facility has earned notoriety as the “Israeli” version of the Guantanamo prison.

Despite conducting a thorough search for an entire day, the “Israeli” police service has failed so far to find any clues about the escapees’ current whereabouts.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Wafa news agency said the regime had begun taking out the embarrassment on other Palestinian inmates through a number of measures.

It has transferred more than a dozen prisoners from Gilboa’s second ward to another “Israeli” prison and stopped allowing prisoners’ access to television. The regime has also taken five of the Islamic Jihad’s leaders to Gilboa’s interrogation center, and begun rummaging every nook and cranny throughout the prison.

The resistance group said it was monitoring the situation at “Israeli” prisons, advising Tel Aviv against taking “retaliatory measures” against the prisoners.

The movement said it would not leave its prisoners alone and noted that whatever “‘Israeli’ terrorist action” against them was to be met with its due response.

“The ‘Israeli’ regime should know this that violations targeting the prisoners are our redline,” it said, adding, “We are prepared to and capable of defending our prisoners and have several options at our disposal to do so.”

The Israeli Prisons Authority has imposed punitive measures on Palestinian detainees, the Prisoners’ Information Office warned this morning, adding that this could lead to a “serious escalation” in tensions in jails.

Occupation authorities have reduced the time prisoners are allowed to spend outside to one hour and reduced the number of detainees in the prison yard at any one time. It has also closed the prisoners’ shop, from which they buy essentials including soap, and moved prisoners who are members of the Islamic Jihad movement around into different prisons.

Lawyers and family visits have now been banned, the Palestinian Liberation Organisation’s Prisoners’ Affairs Authority said.

The Prisoners’ Information Office stressed that “prisons are on the verge of a dangerous escalation in light of the punitive measures imposed by the prison administration on prisoners.”

Spokesman for the Prisoners’ Affairs Authority, Hassan Abd Rabbo, confirmed that the occupation authorities transferred all prisoners from Gilboa prison to a number of other prisons, and placed them in solitary confinement.

These measures come after six Palestinian detainees, five of whom were members of Islamic Jihad, escaped from Israel’s high-security

Israeli PM Naftali Bennett is in contact with his Minister of Public Security, who is receiving fresh reports on the search for the prisoners, while Israeli media reports that airplanes of an unspecified type were called in to help track them down.

Israeli media reported today, on Monday, that the occupation transferred close to 400 prisoners from Gilboa prison to other facilities, fearing additional tunnels, noting that hundreds of special police units were called in to the prison to investigate the escape.

The area surrounding the prison, according to the media, was combed to look for the prisoners. The occupation also closed down several checkpoints and tightened its measures on other West Bank military checkpoints.

It was also reported by a senior security official that the escape of prisoners from Gilboa reflects a “series of dangerous failures,” noting that estimates reveal that the digging of the tunnel took years, not months.

On his part, Israeli PM Naftali Bennett spoke with the occupation’s Public Security Minister, Omer Bar-Lev, who is receiving fresh reports on search operations. The former said “the incident is a serious one,” and that it requires methodical general effort by all security forces.

The head of Gilboa’s Regional Council also said that the time between the escape and its discovery gave the prisoners enough time to gain a lot of distance.

Israeli Channel 12 also reported that the distance between Gilboa Prison and Jenin is only 13 km, considering what happened a failure for all ministries and security apparatuses, from the public security ministry to military intelligence, to the security-military establishment, because the digging went on for more than “8 months” without anyone discovering anything.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Military’s Spokesperson reported that several unspecified airplanes were called in to find the “security prisoners” who escaped from Gilboa prison.

Palestinian factions commented on the escape, saying that this step is a major victory that proves that the will of resistance fighters indomitable and invincible.

New “Israeli” Failure: Six Palestinian Prisoners Escape Prison through Tunnel

New “Israeli” Failure: Six Palestinian Prisoners Escape Prison through Tunnel

By Staff, Agencies

In a new severe slap to the apartheid “Israeli” entity, six Palestinian prisoners managed to escape from Gilboa Prison in the West Bank overnight Sunday.

“Israeli” officials are concerned that the six will try to carry out attacks or escape the Zionist entity. Amongst the prisoners is Zakaria Zabidi, the former leader of Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade.

Prison officials surmise that the six escaped via a tunnel leading outside the prison walls that they had managed to dig over the past few months. The Shin Bet reported the inmates coordinated with collaborators outside the prison using a smuggled cellphone and had an escape car waiting for them. They were first noticed by local farmers who notified the police.

It was discovered that the six prisoners had escaped at around 4 A.M. during a head count.

An investigation into the incident is underway, said the Prisons Service. An official from the “Israel” Prison Service described the breach as “a major security and intelligence failure.”

In a statement made shortly after the event the Islamic Jihad called the escape “heroic” and added that it will “shock the ‘Israeli defense’ system.” Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum praised the prisoners saying “the escape proves the bravery of these prisoners, achieving freedom despite such strict security measures. It’s a heroic and impressive action.”

6 Palestinian Prisoners Break Out of Gilboa Prison

The Israeli occupation has announced that six Palestinian prisoners broke out of Gilboa Prison, which is under heavy security, at dawn today, Monday, through a tunnel dug under the prison.

6 Palestinian prisoners dig a tunnel and break out of prison

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz confirmed that six Palestinian prisoners managed to escape from Gilboa Prison near the occupied city of Beit She’an, at dawn today, Monday.

According to the newspaper, this prison is considered one of the most fortified Israeli prisons.

The Israeli occupation announced that police forces launched a manhunt in search of the prisoners at large. They are undergoing a full-scale search operation in the area crowded with villages and towns, which is also close to the border with the northern West Bank and Jordan.

Reports state that six prisoners dug a tunnel to break free from Gilboa prison and were reported missing around 4 am.

Israeli media websites published pictures of the tunnel that the escaped prisoners dug and escaped through, along with pictures of the prisoners.

A real prison break

A source from the Islamic Jihad Movement told Al Mayadeen that Mahmoud Abdullah al-Ardah is the “prince” of the prisoners in Gilboa prison and the one who led the prisoners’ escape.

The source added that the prisoners’ escape constitutes a severe blow to the Israeli army and the entire regime in “Israel”.

He described the prison break as a “heroic” move, which will cause a severe shock to the Israeli security system.

According to Israeli sources, the prisoners who managed to escape through a tunnel are Zakaria al-Zubaidi, Munadel Yaqoub Nafi’at, Muhammad Qassem Aardeh, Yaqoub Mahmoud Qadri, Ayham Fouad Kamamji, Mahmoud Abdullah Aardeh, knowing that the last five are members of the Islamic Jihad Movement.

“Israel” keeps about 4,850 prisoners in its prisons, including 41 female prisoners, 225 children, and 540 administrative detainees, according to institutions specializing in prisoners’ affairs.

It is worth mentioning that after several escape attempts, prison guards made a decision to keep all Islamic Jihad Movement members on top floors, not ground floors.

Gilboa Prison under the radar

Gilboa Prison is located in northern Palestine and was newly established under the supervision of Irish experts.

It was opened in 2004, near Shatta prison in the Bisan area of 1948.
