Israeli media discuss the dangers of expanding the war with Lebanon, stressing that this “will push Israel to the brink of the abyss.”

Israeli media discussed the dangers of expanding the war with Lebanon into a full-scale war, stressing it would “push Israel to the brink of the abyss, especially with the absence of international legitimacy and an exhausted army.”

Military affairs analyst Amos Harel, writing for Haaretz, emphasized, “A war with Hezbollah would present an unprecedented challenge to Israel’s home front, with the northern and central regions confronting a level of threat previously unseen.”

He added, “It is increasingly challenging to anticipate positive developments on the horizon, particularly as we approach the ninth month of war.”

Harel continued, citing “a series of discussions held over the past two weeks with officials in security and military circles,” which disclosed growing signs that “Israel is heading towards a multidimensional failure.”

In this context, he emphasized that “Israel” finds itself entangled in all fronts, with the most critical being “the arena of confrontation with Hezbollah in Lebanon,” facing the looming threat of a full-scale war. He warned that such a war would dwarf all previous events, asserting, “Everything that occurred before would pale in comparison.”

Ceasefire talks

He also highlighted that the negotiations concerning the captives-detainees deal with Hamas are “encountering another crisis,” “despite a brief moment where it appeared that US President Joe Biden’s speech might offer a breakthrough.”

He further emphasized that “the ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip, particularly centered around Rafah and the central camps, are unlikely to yield a conclusive victory in the near future.”

Earlier on Thursday, Israeli media highlighted that the hits resulting from Hezbollah’s operation against an Israeli military gathering in Elkosh settlement were severe, deeming it the most serious incident in the northern front since the beginning of the confrontations due to its distance from the border with Lebanon and the extent of the inflicted losses.

The media called for an investigation into the Israeli Air Force’s failure to detect and intercept Hezbollah’s drones.

Touching on the Elkosh operation, the Israeli Channel 14 correspondent said it was “a well-planned and coordinated” operation by Hezbollah, adding that the Lebanese group appears to be escalating the level of its attacks.

Delegations from Egypt, Qatar, and the United States will convene in Doha to discuss mechanisms for restarting truce negotiations in the Gaza Strip.

CIA Director Bill Burns will travel to Doha to consult with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani regarding the latest Gaza ceasefire proposal and Hamas’ response, as stated by White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan to journalists.

According to Egyptian broadcaster Al-Qahera, citing sources, delegations from Egypt, Qatar, and the United States will convene in Doha on Wednesday to discuss mechanisms for restarting truce negotiations in the Gaza Strip.

“Bill Burns is going to be in Doha consulting with the Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed, because Sheikh Mohammed, as well as the emir of Qatar [Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad al-Thani], who [US] President [Joe] Biden spoke with yesterday, have had extensive discussions with Hamas. Bill Burns will be quite interested in hearing first-hand in person what the nature of these discussions was and where things are going from here,” Sullivan said aboard Air Force One en route to France on Tuesday.

The US official claimed that Hamas has not yet responded to the latest ceasefire proposal in the Gaza Strip, while US authorities “have no doubt” in the Israeli stance on the proposal. Last Friday, President Biden presented a new three-phase proposal, outlining a roadmap allegedly aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all captives.

Simultaneously, Israeli occupation Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s office stated on Saturday that any suggestion of “Israel” agreeing to a permanent ceasefire before “the destruction of Hamas’ military and governing capabilities” was “a non-starter”.

Israeli official calls Biden ceasefire deal description ‘not accurate’

US President Joe Biden’s description of “Israel’s” ceasefire proposal was “not accurate”, a senior Israeli official told NBC News on Monday, disputing claims that the occupation agreed to completely withdraw its forces from Gaza in exchange for the captives.

“Israel has not changed its conditions to reach a permanent ceasefire. That will only happen after our objectives are met, including destroying Hamas’s military and governing capabilities,” the official said, noting that even though the White House claimed the plan originated from “Israel”, the proposal was put forward by mediators that “Israel” made changes to.

“It’s strange that they say it’s an Israeli proposal and at the same time that Israel needs to agree to it,” the official continued, adding that “Israel” was awaiting Hamas’ formal response to the proposal.

During an interview for the UK’s Sunday Times newspaper, Ophir Falk, chief foreign policy advisor to Netanyahu, said that “Israel” was not rejecting the deal as it was “a deal we agreed to — it’s not a good deal, but we dearly want the hostages released.”

Hezbollah military media issued consecutive statements to illustrate the attacks and their outcomes.

The first statement mentioned that the Islamic Resistance fighters targeted Ramin Barracks with artillery shells at 9:15 am on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

The second statement maintained that, in response to the assassination carried out by the enemy in the town of Al-Naqoura, the Islamic Resistance launched an aerial attack with a squadron of assault drones on the 810th Hermon Brigade in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights in the Ma’aleh Golan Barracks targeting the positions and deployment of the enemy’s officers and soldiers, and they achieved confirmed hits.

Biden’s Gaza plan: A repackaged, flawed initiative

JUN 4, 2024

The White House’s ‘Gaza ceasefire’ proposal is essentially a rehash of April’s Hamas offer. It reveals Biden’s shrinking options in exiting his self-created Gaza quagmire as US presidential elections draw closer.

Khalil Harb

Everyone who watched US President Joe Biden announce his Gaza ceasefire plan on 31 May must have wondered where the “surrender or die” threat that US officials – notably, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby – have been wagging at Palestinian resistance fighters for months has gone.

No, the American president, who essentially banned the word “ceasefire” from the lips of western and UN officials for the first part of Israel’s brutal military assault on the Gaza Strip, has not suddenly become a pacifist.

Rather, as Israeli journalist Gideon Levy recently summed up in Hebrew daily Haaretz on Israel’s unwinnable war:

The war has become an endless cycle of death and destruction. After Rafah we go back to the beginning, to the northern Gaza Strip, like in a game of Monopoly, but with cruelty, and from there southwards to Rafah, through the ruins of Jabalya, and so on, in blood-soaked mud.

Biden wants out of this quagmire for several reasons: the resistance’s steadfastness in Gaza, the regional military support and international solidarity it has garnered, and the Israeli army’s fluctuating fortunes on the battlefield all have played significant roles. Domestically, the looming prospect of Donald Trump’s return to the White House in the November elections has added to the president’s mix of considerations.

Miscalculations and limited options

Biden thinks it isn’t too late to fix matters. The shaken president is licking his wounds, the price of his losing bet on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s failed war strategies. But it isn’t early either: the “peace plan” Biden presented last Friday indicates Washington’s lack of viable options, and many hurdles lie ahead, not least from his Israeli “ally.”

From the outset, Hamas and other Palestinian resistance factions have maintained a clear stance in negotiations with various parties, including Egypt, Qatar, and France. They have insisted on a ceasefire agreement that ensures an end to the war and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.

On the other hand, Netanyahu is betting on manipulating the language and objectives of the deal’s clauses to assure his ‘extremist’ coalition partners that he has shed the most Palestinian blood possible and plans only to grant a temporary truce for him to return to his genocidal ways whenever desired.

A Resistance Axis source in Beirut tells The Cradle that preventing this Israeli trickery is the essence of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s (PIJ) stance in negotiations. But, interestingly, Biden’s plan is based on principles that Hamas already agreed to last month – an agreement that embarrassed Israel at the time and which it sought to avoid.

‘Cosmetic’ update to the old agreement

Biden’s announcement is essentially a repackaging of last month’s Hamas-approved agreement, which he is now repositioning as an Israeli-sanctioned deal. He even brazenly states that Tel Aviv had submitted “new proposals” structured in three stages, which serve as a roadmap for a ceasefire:

The first stage involves halting the fire, releasing prisoners, and allowing Palestinians to return to their homes. The second phase includes the exchange of living prisoners, including Israeli soldiers. The third phase focuses on reconstruction, which the White House is selling as necessary to prevent Hamas from repeating the events of 7 October.

The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation also quoted Israeli and American officials saying that the Israeli proposal document is remarkably similar to the document Hamas accepted a month prior, which Tel Aviv had refused.

Dimitri Diliani, a member of the Revolutionary Council in the Fatah movement, reveals to The Cradle that the occupation state initially approved the Biden initiative at the end of April. Hamas approved the initiative several days later. But Netanyahu walked back his support for political reasons – mainly because he had anticipated Hamas would reject that deal.

When Hamas unexpectedly approved the initiative, Netanyahu balked. As Diliani recounts:

This initiative was proposed more than once, but the name differs. The first time, it was Egyptian, and today it is called the Biden Initiative, but what is different is that it is clear that there is an American political will to stop the war in Gaza, not in the service of humanity, peace, human rights, or mercy for women and children. But to make it a card for Biden and the Democratic Party after it became clear that he would lose the White House in the upcoming elections, for reasons that include mainly Biden’s support for the war in Gaza and the high number of supporters of stopping the war within the Democratic Party.

In any case, the “Biden plan,” says the Beirut-based Resistance Axis source, is an attempt to alter the status quo – akin to tampering with a crime scene – noting that the US president omitted a clause that demands the establishment of a “Palestinian state.” The White House also opportunistically hopes to use its proposed ceasefire deal to jumpstart the stagnating Saudi–Israeli normalization process – just in time for the November elections.

The plan’s lack of mention of a Palestinian state or a two-state solution has raised concerns. It appears to prioritize Israel’s security and regional integration goals, including normalization with key Arab states, over Palestinian sovereignty.

The source close to the Palestinian resistance movements says the most dangerous part of Biden’s new rhetoric is that he openly acknowledges Israel’s right to renew its war if Hamas “violates” the terms of the deal.

This loophole would allow Israel to exploit any Gaza-related incident, however innocuous, to restart its genocidal campaign on Gaza after the Palestinian resistance releases Israeli captives.

The same source points out that Biden’s initiative raises questions due to his administration’s role as a guarantor for Israel, while Egypt and Qatar are expected to provide assurances to Hamas. This is concerning for several reasons. First, the US has been deeply involved in the conflict from its onset, acting as the key player and weapons supplier in its escalation. Second, there is no certainty that Biden will remain in power after the upcoming November elections, which casts doubt on the long-term reliability of the US as a guarantor.

Internal Israeli politics

Diliani sums up the inherent weaknesses of Biden’s ceasefire plan well, warning that it will set Washington and Tel Aviv on a path of conflict:

There is an American will, for domestic political reasons, to stop the war, but it clashes with a domestic Israeli political will in Netanyahu’s coalition not to stop the war for political reasons. This is what may cause conflict to escalate between the two allies.

Part of the White House’s dilemma lies in the fact that its every initiative tiptoes around the far-right group within the Israeli government (led by National Security and Finance Ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich) that does not want the war on Gaza to stop.

At the same time, there is another Israeli grouping within the government’s “War Cabinet” represented by War Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz – and a third external group led by opposition leader Yair Lapid, who supports halting the war and ousting Netanyahu from power.

But this complex circle of entanglements inside Israel is no longer in the interest of Biden and his Democrats. It is not unlikely that Biden is trying to lure Netanyahu into accepting the deal and going through with it, which could lead to his overthrow by Ben Gvir and Smotrich, who actually threatened to do so as soon as Biden announced his initiative. This is a scenario that could lead to the rise of a movement more willing to reach an understanding with the Americans, represented by Benny Gantz and Lapid.

Was it not remarkable that Biden directed many of his speeches and promises to the “Israeli people” on Friday, reminding them – most importantly – or actually acknowledging that the Gaza battle, despite its ferocity, has not closed and that salvation from Hamas is not within reach, completely as a concept? “The absolute victory” that Netanyahu and his minister Yoav Gallant promised them on 7 October 2023 did not come.

The “end” now is a pain for Israel that will not be cured soon, just as it would if it went ahead with an endless war. Both options are fatal.

The head of Syria’s Republic reaffirmed the commitment to resistance against occupiers as a fundamental principle and praised the deep and strategic relations between Iran and Syria based on shared principles and interests.

At an official meeting with Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani on Tuesday, President Bashar al-Assad said that the path of resistance is the utmost strategic choice and is the correct approach to counter hostility.

During their meeting, the two heads of State discussed several key issues, including the war on Gaza and the alarming necessity to end Israeli war crimes against Palestinians.

“Resistance against the occupiers in all its forms will remain in place as the basic principle and strategic option and as the right way to confront the enemies,” President Assad said in the meeting.

“Whenever the Zionist regime gets closer to defeat against the resistance, it increases the severity of its bloody crimes against the Palestinian nation,” the Syrian president said.

“The relations between Iran and Syria will remain deep and strategic, because they are based on solid principles and common and honest interests,” Bagheri Kani said, for his part.

The Iranian envoy continues his regional tour with Syria being the next stop after his visit to Lebanon. Kani earlier said that enhancing cooperation among resistance factions to counter “Israel” is a key objective of his tour.

During a press briefing alongside Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, the Iranian diplomat attributed regional instability to “Israel,” reaffirming that Iran and Syria stand as staunch allies and crucial elements for maintaining regional security and stability.

“Iran and Syria are proud to have cooperated for more than four decades and they know that the cause of instability in the region is the occupation and the Zionist regime,” Bagheri said.

Head of Yemen’s Ansarullah Movement Sayyed Abdul Malik Badreddine Al-Houthi stressed that there is no decline in the level of the Yemeni operations, but a decline in navigation and ship movements from the American and British sides, and an almost complete halt in Israeli movements.

In a televised speech, Sayyed Houthi indicated that the impact of our operations on the Israeli economy is reflected in their budgets, and as the economic situation is affected, there is a decline in financial aspects.

“There is American and British acknowledgment of Yemen’s ability to escalate its operations as long as the aggression on Gaza continues,” Sayyed Houthi added, “Our operations reach their targets despite attempts by many countries to intercept and counter them.”

Sayyed Houthi advised the Saudis to beware of being manipulated by the Americans to serve the “Israeli” enemy.

“Targeting banks in Sanaa is an act of economic aggression, and if the Saudis get involved to serve Israel, they will face a major problem,” Sayyed Houthi warned, “The Saudis have no need for these problems, so why do they offer themselves and their resources to serve the Israeli enemy?”

“Do not be foolish enough to let the Americans recruit you to lose everything in service of the Israeli enemy.”

Operation Al-Aqsa Flood has had a pivotal and far-reaching impact on the region, Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said.

Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized on Friday that “the Resistance front has become larger, broader, more comprehensive, and stronger than ever before.”

“We are on a front whose future is bright and victorious,” he said during the memorial ceremony for the late scholar Sheikh Ali Kourani, adding that “it is only a matter of time” before this front achieves victory.

He highlighted that the Israeli front is “experiencing a dire situation, the likes of which it has not faced in 79 years,” as per Israeli officials.

Sayyed Nasrallah affirmed that Operation Al-Aqsa Flood “concerns the future of Lebanon, its resources, and its sovereignty.”

The Lebanese Resistance leader stressed that the operation must be viewed “as a battle of existence and destiny-shaping, and we must all be involved in it,” emphasizing that victory in this battle “will have positive effects on the region at all levels.”

He affirmed that South Lebanon is at the heart of this battle, explaining that this front “is pressing, strong, and impactful” on the Israeli occupation and it “is part of the battle that shall shape the destiny of Palestine, Lebanon, and the region, beyond the narrow calculations preoccupying some Lebanese.”

Hezbollah’s chief called on the Lebanese people to pay attention to the assessments of Israeli generals, officials, and settlers about the effectiveness of the Lebanon front.

Sayyed Nasrallah indicated that Israeli leaders “came to the north to boast about pushing the Resistance kilometers away, only for the response to come with an operation just a few meters from the [Ramya] site,” adding, “Had the Resistance fighters planned to enter the site, they would have.”

Lebanon’s backing of Palestine transcends sects

Sayyed Nasrallah addressed the circulating claims about “the Lebanese not supporting the [Lebanese] Resistance operations,” asserting that any such support for the Lebanese front in its backing of Palestine transcends all sects and is not confined to any one group.

“Let everyone know their worth and speak on behalf of those they represent when claiming that the majority of the Lebanese people oppose the support front,” he stressed.

He questioned those who claim that the Lebanese people refuse to support Gaza, asking, “What opinion poll proves these allegations?”

The resistance leader explained that despite the burdens and aggression suffered by Lebanon from the Israeli occupation entity since 1948, the society remained supportive, loyal, and sincere, attributing the Resistance’s victories against “Israel” in May 2000 and July 2006 to this steadfastness.

Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized that the outcomes of the battle in South Lebanon “are far greater than any internal political wins,” just as the liberation in 2000 and the victory in 2006 were.

Related News

He also denied claims that the southern Lebanese front is preventing the election of a president for the country, asserting that the battles in the South and Gaza are not linked to the presidential elections.

What has disrupted the election of a president in Lebanon are internal disagreements and external vetoes, Hezbollah Secretary-General explained.

“From the beginning, we said that we do not want to leverage what is happening in the South for internal affairs, but some [sides] are living in delusion,” he indicated.

In a related context, Sayyed Nasrallah explained that the leaks about offers and temptations regarding drilling in exchange for halting the southern Lebanese front reveal the complicity of the United States in causing suffering for the Lebanese people.

He noted that the US is complicit in the electricity crisis in Lebanon and obstructing the issue of oil fields in Lebanese waters.

‘Netanyahu leading Israeli entity to the abyss’

Regarding “Israel’s” failure in Gaza, Sayyed Nasrallah explained that the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is leading the entity on a downhill course, through his insistence on the war he has waged.

He commented on the statements of the War Cabinet minister and the man behind the “Dahiya doctrine,” Gadi Eisenkot, in which he said that an entire contingent (comprising several brigades) of the Israeli occupation army is waging battles against one battalion that the army claimed it had dismantled in Jabalia, stressing that “the fighting is difficult.”

This, according to Sayyed Nasrallah, is clear proof that the Israeli army is drained, forcing it to enter Jabalia with an entire contingent, with the Rafah battle ongoing down south.

Further highlighting the dire situation the Israeli entity is mired in, Hezbollah’s chief reiterated the words of the head of the Israeli Central Bank who talked about a “catastrophe that would befall the entity,” depicting an upcoming state of crises and disasters as highlighted by army commanders and senior Israeli officials.

In a related context, Sayyed Nasrallah pointed out that “the stances of the countries whereby they condemned the aggression and ongoing massacres and recognized the State of Palestine are among the blessings of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.”

Yemen

During his speech, Sayyed Nasrallah expressed his condolences to the Yemeni people following the latest American aggression on Yemen, which killed 16 and injured 41.

He pointed out that the Yemeni stance has been clear from the beginning that “no American aggression will affect Yemeni support and backing for Palestine and the Gaza Strip.”

About Sheikh Kourani

Touching on the journey of Sheikh Kourani, the Lebanese leader noted that the late cleric put great efforts into religious propagation from Iraq to Kuwait, Lebanon, Iran, and many African and Arab nations, in addition to his participation in numerous conferences.

He added that Sheikh Kourani authored more than 60 books on theology, among other topics, deeming the Sheikh’s achievements significant, including his introduction of modern technologies to the seminary and academic research. Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized that the most important achievement in this context is his encyclopedic work.

The Hezbollah chief pointed out that Sheikh Kourani “did not consider himself confined to a specific file or geographical boundaries” and was among the founders of the Islamic movement work starting in Iraq in the 1960s and one of the founders of the beginnings of clandestine Resistance work in the late 1970s.

Sheikh Kourani continued his resistance work for over 40 years, leading to the launch of the Islamic Resistance, Sayyed Nasrallah mentioned, adding that the cleric’s faith in and support for the Resistance were absolute through statements and sacrifices, including his son, martyr Sheikh Yasser.

Elsewhere, the Resistance leader emphasized that Sheikh Ali Kourani was completely committed to the Palestinian cause “from the river to the sea,” strongly believed in the Resistance’s victory and the Israeli entity’s downfall, and was eager to witness that day.

“Hezbollah’s greatest achievement since its establishment was the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Lebanon in 2000,” former Israeli Northern Command Chief of Staff Brig.-Gen. Asher Ben Lulu was quoted by Israeli media as saying in early May.

24 years have passed on the liberation of south Lebanon and the Zionist entity is still recalling its humiliating defeat on May 25, 2000.

Al-Manar looks back into that triumphant days, once called by some Lebanese people as God’s days, when the Lebanese resistance heroically forced the occupation forces out of south Lebanon.

The video below, prepared by Areej Fatima Husseini gives a glance on the occasion and shows the unforgettable moments when jubilant Lebanese citizens, who endured years of Israeli oppression, celebrated the historic victory.

The anniversary of south Lebanon liberation comes this year as the region witnesses high tensions due to the brutal Israeli war on Gaza, now in its eighth month, and has killed nearly 36,000 people and injured more than 80,000 others.

The war has prompted resistance groups across the region to move in support of the besieged territory, with Hezbollah opening up the south Lebanon front, Yemen’s Ansarullah attacking Israel-bound ships in the Red Sea and beyond and the Islamic Resistance in Iraq staging strikes against Israeli and US targets in the occupied territories.

Returning back to the Israeli commander, Ben Lulu considered that evacuation of Israeli settlers in the Zionist entity’s north is the second important achievement secured by Hezbollah.

“The second most important achievement secured by Hezbollah is the evacuations in the northern front,” due to strikes staged by the Lebanese group, Israeli media quoted the Zionist commander as saying.

Celebrations Cancelled

May 25 celebrations were called off in Lebanon this year over martyrdom of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, FM Hossein Amir Abdollahian and other Iranian officials in a tragic helicopter crash last week, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah announced on Friday during a ceremony honoring the Iranian leaders.

“Liberation of south Lebanon in May 25, 2000 was a great victory to the Resistance and historic defeat to the Zionist entity. Unfortunately, this year’s celebrations on Resistance and Liberation Day are cancelled after martyrdom of President Raisi and companions,” Sayyed Nasrallah addressed the ceremony in Beirut’s southern suburb (Dahiyeh) on Friday.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah

By Al Mayadeen English

On the occasion of the helicopter crash in Iran, Hezbollah’s Secretary-General reflects on the traits of the late Iranian President and FM and sheds light on the situation on the Lebanese-Palestinian border.

Hezbollah Secretary-General, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, stressed that late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi strongly believed in the Palestinian cause, as well as the Resistance and all its factions, and was deeply committed to supporting the Resistance movements with money, weapons, training, and experience amid a strong hostility toward the Israeli occupation.

During the commemorative ceremony held by Hezbollah in honor of late President Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and their companions in the southern suburb of Beirut, Sayyed Nasrallah said that the Iranian president was “knowledgeable, humble, and very courageous in the face of hypocrites and enemies, as much as he was a believer in the Resistance and its project and a servant for his country, Iran.”

He added that the era of President Raisi witnessed huge development at the level of Iran’s diplomacy, not to mention that the notions of developing ties with Iran’s neighboring countries and heading East were deemed a priority while maintaining relations with the West within a certain level.

‘Martyrs Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian believed in the Resistance, its project’

On the helicopter crash, Sayyed Nasrallah expressed sadness and regret over the incident, stressing that it was painful and sad for people inside and outside Iran.

The martyrs “always stood with us and never abandoned us,” he affirmed.

While the Secretary-General of Hezbollah referred to the need for role models so that “our beliefs do not remain mere ideas and ink on paper,” he stressed the necessity of regarding President Ebrahim Raisi as the “role model” he was “in all the positions for which he assumed responsibility.”

In this context, Sayyed Nasrallah pointed out that Raisi brought about a major transformation in the management and development of the Imam Reza Shrine when he assumed its responsibility, stressing that the disadvantaged and poor benefited from the services he provided.

Speaking about the late Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Sayyed Nasrallah confirmed that he dearly loved Palestine, Lebanon, and all the Resistance movements and strongly believed in them

“We saw nothing but goodness, help, support, and love from martyrs Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian, and we thank them for all that they offered,” stressing that one of the most important things that distinguished these two personalities was their humbleness.

Funeral processions scenes confirm people’s commitment to Iran’s leadership

The Secretary-General of Hezbollah emphasized that Iran has withstood the dangers and challenges it has faced since the early days of the Islamic Revolution’s victory in 1979, including economic sanctions, increasing global pressures, and assassinations.

Sayyed Nasrallah referred to the massive scenes of the funeral processions held for the deceased officials, from Tabriz to the city of Mashhad, asserting that the message they convey is one of “loyalty and steadfast commitment” to the path of the leader and founder of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Imam Khomeini, and the leadership of the Islamic Republic.

He explained that one of the reasons behind the failure of the US policies toward the region is “the denial of reality and detachment from it,” affirming that Iran is “a strong, cohesive, and resilient state” and that while it was deeply pained by the death of its president and his companions, this did not weaken or disrupt it.

The Resistance leader stressed that Iran is “a state of institutions and laws, with a wise leader at its helm who governs this state, and it enjoys a very high level of popular will and confidence.”

Regarding Iran’s support for the Resistance movements, Sayyed Nasrallah stressed that those who expect Iran to abandon Palestine and the Resistance “are greatly delusional.”

He pointed out that this support is part of the vision of the Islamic Republic and an integral part of its religion, and it does not change or alter with the departure of officials, confirming that Tehran continues to support Resistance movements and this support “is increasing and becoming more apparent.”

‘Israel’ should expect surprises from the Resistance

The Secretary-General of Hezbollah affirmed that the insistence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on continuing his aggression on Gaza means that “Israel will fall into the abyss and plunge into disaster,” stressing that the Israeli occupation “failed to achieve any of its objectives.”

The Lebanese leader pointed out that Israelis, in the eighth month of the war, unanimously agree that what their entity has experienced during this year is unprecedented.

Regarding the southern front in Lebanon and Hezbollah’s operations in support of Gaza, Sayyed Nasrallah confirmed that the Resistance studied all possible scenarios that the Israeli occupation could resort to against Lebanon.

Addressing the Israeli occupation, Sayyed Nasrallah said that besieged Gaza surprised “Israel” on October 7 by launching its Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, while the Resistance in Lebanon surprised the occupation entity on October 8 by opening the northern front.

According to Hezbollah’s chief, the surprises continued with Yemen, alongside Iraq, joining in the battle “with such strength, resilience, and courage.”

Iran too surprised the occupation with its missiles, drones, and Operation True Promise, he maintained.

“Expect more surprises from our Resistance,” Sayyed Nasrallah addressed Netanyahu’s government saying.

Recognition of Palestinian state, ICC warrants for Israeli officials fruits of Al-Aqsa Flood

Additionally, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah spoke about the recognition of the Palestinian state by several European countries, which various groups within the Israeli occupation entity reject as it is deemed an existential threat.

Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized that the recognition of the Palestinian state by these countries, which is among the most significant challenges faced by Israeli officials, deals a mighty blow to the Israeli occupation.

He stressed that the expanding recognition of a Palestinian state is one of the outcomes of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood and its aftermath.

The Lebanese Resistance leader also mentioned that among the fruits of Al-Aqsa Flood and Palestinian steadfastness is the situation “Israel” is facing in international courts, including recent developments at the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has sought arrest warrants against Israeli officials.

Sayyed Nasrallah further emphasized that the Resistance’s October 7 operation has stirred humanitarian sentiments worldwide, expressing gratitude to professors and students worldwide who have demonstrated in support of the Palestinian people.

Touching on these protests, Sayyed Nasrallah considered that they “demonstrate the extent of the humanitarian sentiments ignited by Operation Al-Aqsa Flood worldwide.”

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah stressed that Iran is powerful and won’t abandon the resistance groups in the region, affirming that passing of President Ebrahim Raisi and companions won’t lead to any change in the policy of the Islamic Republic.

In a ceremony held in tribute to late President Raisi, FM Hossein Amir Abdollahian and other companions in Beirut’s southern suburb (Dahiyeh), Sayyed Nasrallah addressed Iran enemies, as saying: “Deluded are all those who wait for Iran to weaken or to abandon the resistance groups in the region.”

The Hezbollah leader hit back at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s threats, stressing that Hezbollah is the party who has the right to talk about surprises.

Sayyed Nasrallah said the Zionist entity has to wait for surprises, noting that the resistance groups in Gaza, Lebanon and Yemen have been surprising the Israeli enemy since the start of the war following Op. Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, 2023.

His eminence warned that if Netanyahu goes ahead with the war in Gaza then “he will be heading towards catastrophe and abyss.” He also mocked Israeli ministers who called for controlling south Lebanon, addressing them as wondering if the Israeli army has managed to control Gaza first.

Sayyed Nasrallah noted, meanwhile, that today, in the eighth month of the war Israeli officials are admitting that the Zionist enemy is in failure.

Painful Incident

Starting his speech by talking about the occasion of the ceremony, Sayyed Nasrallah said that the incident in which helicopter of President Raisi and companions crashed “was a painful incident that led to the loss of prominent figures whom the nation will miss.”

He noted that Resistance and Liberation Day celebrations was cancelled following the passing away of the Iranian leaders.

His eminence reiterated condolences to Imam Mahdi (May Allah hasten his reappearance), Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei, families of the martyrs and the entire Iranian nation.

President Raisi Role Model

Sayyed Nasrallah praised late President Ebrahim Raisi, saying he was a role model in the positions he had occupied.

“We’d known Sayyed Raisi since he was the Chairman of Astan Quds Razavi and then the Head of the Judiciary in Iran, before being elected as a President of the Islamic Republic.”

“Sayyed Ebrahim Raisi was a scholar, religious, compassionate, loving, humble and courageous in face of hegemonic powers. He repeatedly said that he considered himself a soldier under the banner of Supreme Leader Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei.”

Sayyed Nasrallah said that late President Raisi withstood both political and economic challenges amid the blockade and sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic.

“The era of President Raisi witnessed a development in Iran’s diplomatic presence and witnessed the prioritization of the relationship with Iran’s neighboring countries and the East.”

“Sayyed Raisi had great faith in the Palestinian cause, the resistance, and the resistance groups in the region.”

Paying tribute to late FM Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Sayyed Nasrallah said that the former top Iranian diplomat “had a great love for Palestine, Lebanon and all resistance groups of the region.”

“We have known nothing but love, sympathy and support from Sayyed Raisi and Mr. Amir Abdollahian,” Sayyed Nasrallah stated.

“Third Largest Funeral”

Sayyed Nasrallah then pointed to the mass turnout for the funeral of Raisi and companions on both the official and the popular levels. His eminence referred to the mourning services and funeral processions in Tabriz, Qom, Tehran, Mashhad and many other Iranian cities as unprecedented.

“The funeral of President Raisi and companions in the third largest funeral in the new history following funeral of Imam Khomeini and martyr Hajj Qassem Suleimani,” the Hezbollah S.G. said.

His eminence said there were two messages that can be derived from the mass funeral of President Raisi and companions.

“The mass funeral of President Raisi and companions has delivered a message of loyalty and allegiance to the path of Imam Khamenei in Iran. The second message is that Iran is powerful and cohesive stat.”

Sayyed Nasrallah stressed, meanwhile, that “deluded are those who are waiting for Iran to weaken or to abandon Palestine and resistance groups.”

In this context, the Hezbollah leader hit back at those who claim that Hezbollah’s popularity is down, saying: “Those who accuse Hezbollah of losing popularity suffer disorders related to denial and dissociation from reality, a local funeral of a Hezbollah martyr in south Lebanon is more popular than a central ceremony celebrated by any other Lebanese power.”

‘Israel’ Faces Challenges

Talking about the course of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, Sayyed Nasrallah said that the Zionist entity is witnessing some changes in the stance of the international stance towards Palestine.

He said that of the October 7 heroic operation’s prominent repercussions were moves by European countries to recognize Palestinian state and the arrest warrants by the ICC against Israeli PM Netanyahu and Israeli defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Meanwhile, he hailed students and faculty members who have taken part in pro-Gaza protests in campuses across the world.

On the other hand, his eminence underlined that both Israeli opposition and pro-government officials agree that the war on Gaza, now in its eighth month, failed to achieve any of its goals.

Israeli officials admit to failure and agree that the events the Zionist entity has been witnessing are unprecedented, the leader of the Lebanese resistance group said.

Sayyed Nasrallah cited remarks by the head of Israeli National Security Council, who said that in the Israeli northern front there is no clear strategy by the occupation military and that in Gaza the Israeli army was neither able to free captives, crush or disarm Hamas.

Resistance Surprises

Hitting back at Netanyahu who threatened Hezbollah with “surprises”, Sayyed Nasrallah said that the resistance groups are the party who has the right to talk about surprises, hinting out that Hamas itself took ‘Israel’ by surprise during Op. Al-Aqsa Flood.

“Gaza has surprised you and your elite forces have collapsed, Hezbollah surprised you when it opened the front in south Lebanon, Yemeni revolutionaries surprised you with the pro-Gaza operations and Iran surprised you with its retaliation following the strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus,” Sayyed Nasrallah said, addressing Israeli officials.

His eminence warned that if Netanyahu continues the aggression on Gaza “then he is heading towards catastrophe and abyss.”

“I say to Netanyahu and to the enemy government: You have to wait for the resistance’s surprises. We in the resistance have studied all your moves. We won’t be deceived by your deception and the front in south Lebanon will remain opened up in support of Gaza as our objectives and stances are clear.”

Sayyed Nasrallah, in this context, mocked calls by Israeli ministers of finance and so-called national security Bezalel Smotrich and Itmar Ben-Gvir who called on the Israeli army to invade south Lebanon and establish a security zone up to the Litani River.

Sayyed Nasrallah recalled when former defense minister Avidgor Liberman rebuked proposal by Smotrich and Ben-Gvir.

“Khabibeh (meaning beloved with a Hebrew accent) with what soldiers you will invade south Lebanon!? Have you finished in Gaza?” Sayyed Nasrallah recalled Liberman as he ridiculed the Israeli ministers.

The Battle of Jabalia: A Palestinian lesson in war of attrition

MAY 23, 2024

Source

Israel seeks fast, hard wars, while its opponents seek slow-boiling, irregular wars of attrition. Now, with the resurgence of resistance ops in Jabalia and Gaza areas, Israel has lost both the field and the war.

Khalil Harb

The ground situation in Jabalia refugee camp, north of Gaza City, is more than merely a military clash between an invading force and resistance fighters fighting a “guerrilla war.” The deeper implication of the sudden battles that have sprung up in Gaza’s largest camp is that Israel is far more entangled than it wants to acknowledge, mirroring the US experience in its disastrous Vietnam quagmire.

Unlike the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Vietnam, however, Gaza is a flat strip of land that lacks crossings, mountain passes, or forests for the resistance to move personnel and weapons with ease across swathes of terrain. Egypt, which shares the Rafah Crossing with Gaza, has distanced itself from the Strip, and Gazans share no other borders with the outside world.

The resurgence of resistance in Jabalia, in fierce battles that have caught the Israeli army off guard, therefore, points to what some may call a ‘miracle.’

More than a guerrilla war

Speaking to The Cradle, a Hamas leader says that Tel Aviv’s claims of controlling the north and center of the Strip before focusing on the south were always false and that the resistance still retains its strength and leadership.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) spokesman Mohammed al-Haj Moussa assesses the situation similarly, telling The Cradle, “We are ready for a long battle of attrition” – echoing the words of Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Obeida.

Their comments that northern Gaza is not under Israeli control, as it has often claimed, are evidenced by today’s resurgent battles in the north of the Strip.

At the war’s onset, Israeli forces moved from several directions toward the Strip, including Al-Atatreh, Beit Lahiya, Beit Hanoun, and Shujaiya in the north and northeast, and from central axes like Juhr al-Dik and Al-Zaytoun neighborhood towards Sheikh Ajlin near the coast – ostensibly to further tighten their control over Gaza’s north.

However, in January, Israel announced the redeployment of its forces, withdrawing from most northern areas and stationing mainly in Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, intending to move toward areas where resistance continued, mostly southward of the Strip.

Tel Aviv’s confidence that matters had swung in its favor in Jabalia was misplaced. Today’s the occupation army’s announced losses – in both soldiers and hardware – confirm that a fierce fight is taking place in the camp and its environs.

A senior Hamas source informs The Cradle that Israel’s “mowing the grass” strategy, intended to weaken or cripple Gaza’s resistance periodically, has failed to make the desired dent, even after 225 days of war.

The real war of attrition

Sources in the Palestinian resistance report that even Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, a major stronghold for Israeli forces to counteract the ‘Palestinian Viet Cong’ in northern Gaza, was unstable for Israeli soldiers. Palestinian fighters regularly emerged from the rubble and underground to fight a real war of attrition against the thousands of soldiers stationed there.

Resistance sources also say that a range of explosive weapons were used in ambushes and attacks: “Al-Shuath bombs” and “Tandem” to destroy Merkava tanks and other armored vehicles, “Al-Yassin 105” shells, and bombs and booby-traps in houses using rockets and shells that didn’t explode during earlier raids, detonated when soldiers take cover inside.

Additionally, there are also ongoing sniper operations, mortar shelling, and sudden face-to-face clashes with enemy soldiers by fighters who emerge from tunnels.

The aforementioned Hamas leader tells The Cradle that these operations reveal “the IDF’s loss of control” and adds:

“The enemy is not ready for long and multi-front battles, and this is what made it lose its balance and, at the same time, began to lose the theory on which it was based, which is a policy of deterrence and pre-emptive operations.”

A particularly ironic aspect is that the Israeli military claimed it had ‘dismantled’ 20 of the original 24 Hamas battalions, giving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu an excuse to move ahead with his invasion of Rafah.

“We can’t leave them there,” Netanyahu said of the intact battalions in an interview earlier this month. “What they are trying to do is extort [or] blackmail us to leave Gaza. Leave them in place, these battalions, leave their leadership in place, and they go take over Gaza again and do it again.”

A stalled ‘victory’

But Netanyahu’s relentless efforts to overwhelm Gaza and declare ‘victory’ over the resistance keep hitting the wall of the Palestinian Viet Cong and their nonstop display of new tactics: deception, ambushes, sabotage, espionage, sacrifice, and, importantly, strategic patience.

Jabalia serves as a quintessential lesson from this new-and-improved resistance. It is a resounding slap to the prime minister and his war cabinet, undermining an Israeli ‘victory’ at every turn. It exposes the futility of the proposed plans – whether Israeli, American, or Arab – to occupy, administer, or impose authority over Gaza.

The PIJ’s Haj Moussa says the military battles in Jabalia and Rafah, where occupation forces are also suffering increased losses, show that Israel “has not been able, for about eight months, to reach any of its declared goals in Gaza, neither at the level of uprooting the resistance nor the expulsion of Zionist prisoners.”

Despite unconditional US and western security band military support, Tel Aviv has been unable to definitively impose its control over Jabalia or other areas. The PIJ official emphasizes that the Al-Quds Brigades, his movement’s military wing, is still present throughout the Gaza Strip, and there is no fear of resistance weakening.

Analysts, including some within the Biden administration, agree that Israel is far from achieving victory. It has neither captured land, freed prisoners, nor killed senior resistance leaders. Lacking a credible plan for the “next day” and unable to destroy the labyrinth of tunnels, Israel is lost in the labyrinths above ground, not just below.

What happened to Tel Aviv’s boasts of killing 13,000 Hamas militants (out of 30,000–40,000 fighters), or its identification and destruction of “Hamas tunnels,” or its “cleansing” of entire areas from resistance control? What happened to Netanyahu’s claims that only “four battalions” were left in Hamas?

How is the Palestinian resistance still fighting fiercely in Shujaiya, Jabalia, Al-Zaytoun, Deir al-Balah, all the way to Rafah in Gaza’s south? How are Israeli tanks and armored vehicles being depleted so quickly, and the occupation forces dying in larger numbers than before?

If Netanyahu was betting that the subjugation of Jabalia, Rafah, and other key areas would facilitate his ability to negotiate the release of Israeli prisoners, he should cut his losses quickly to evade two defeats: a political one from his coalition partners and an angry public, and a military one in Gaza.

It is only a Gaza ceasefire that can save the Israeli prime minister from a Palestinian war of attrition, which will wear down Israeli morale, drain its economy, and frustrate its western allies.

For Haj Moussa, “the talk of Netanyahu and the occupation leaders about the expected victory, it is nothing but an illusion, and they are nothing but slogans that have nothing to do with the truth.”

How Israel-Linked Billionaires Silenced US Campus Protests

America’s universities are on fire. A protest movement against the violence in Gaza and U.S. colleges’ complicity in them has swept the nation, with encampments on college campuses in 45 of America’s 50 states. The crackdown has been swift; thousands of students have been arrested, charged, fined, lost their degrees, or even deported. Amid corporate media demanding a “Kent State 2.0”, riot police, armored vehicles and snipers have been deployed across the country to terrify those campaigning for justice into silence.

Why have overwhelmingly peaceful demonstrations against a foreign power’s actions been met with such a heavy-handed response? A MintPress News investigation finds that those same elite institutions have deep financial and ideological ties to the state of Israel, are funded by pro-Israel billionaires who have demanded they take action to crush the student movement, are partially funded by the Israeli government, and exist in a climate where Washington has made it clear that the protests should not be tolerated.

ISRAEL’S BILLIONAIRE BACKERS

The movement began on April 17 at Columbia University, where a modest Gaza solidarity encampment was established. Protestors hardly expected to be welcomed by university authorities but were shocked as university president Minouche Shafik immediately called in the NYPD – the first time the university had allowed police to suppress dissent on campus since the famous 1968 demonstrations against the Vietnam War.

Shafik’s decision was no doubt influenced by the enormous pressure put on her by the university’s top donors – many of whom have deep connections to the Israeli state and its military.

ROBERT KRAFT

Billionaire businessman and sports executive Robert Kraft, for example, publicly announced he was cutting the university off from his lavish funding over its failure to suppress the protests effectively enough. “I am deeply saddened at the virulent hate that continues to grow on campus and throughout our country,” he said in a statement, claiming that Columbia was not protecting its Jewish students.

The turning point, Kraft said, was watching a publicity stunt by Shai Davidai, an Israeli-American academic at Columbia, who claimed his access to campus was revoked. Davidai had previously called the student protestors “Nazis” and “terrorists” and called for the National Guard to be set upon the encampment, obliquely referencing the Kent State University Massacre while doing so.

Kraft is one of Columbia’s most important donors, giving the institution millions of dollars, including $3 million to fund the Kraft Center for Jewish Student Life.

He also has deep connections to Israel, having visited the country over 100 times, including to have private lunch with his friend, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said, “Israel does not have a more loyal friend than Robert Kraft.”

Netanyahu is correct. Kraft is one of the Israel lobby’s primary benefactors, donating millions to groups such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), The Israel Project and StandWithUs. He pledged a gigantic $100 million to his own Foundation to Combat Antisemitism – a group that presents critics of Israeli policy with the charge of anti-Jewish racism. He has also funded a host of pro-Israel politicians in races against progressive, anti-war challengers. A recent MintPress News investigation took a closer look at how Kraft is a key actor in trying to launder Israel’s image in America.

LEON COOPERMAN

Another billionaire benefactor pulling his Columbia funding is Leon Cooperman. The hedge fund manager suspended his donations in October, citing student support for Palestine. “These kids are fucking crazy. They don’t understand what they’re doing or what they’re talking about,” he fumed, adding that they “have to be controlled.” One person who does know what he is talking about on this issue is Columbia’s Professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History, Joseph Massad. Yet Cooperman demanded Massad be fired after the academic took positions on Palestine he objected to.

Cooperman has enormous influence at Columbia precisely because he is one of its chief income sources. In 2012, for instance, he donated $25 million to support the construction of the university’s new Manhattanville campus.

However, Columbia is far from the only organization that receives lavish Cooperman cash. He is also a regular donor to the Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces (FIDF), a group that collects money to purchase supplies, equipment and support for active-duty Israeli soldiers. In addition, he was the first person to provide an endowment to Birthright Israel, an organization that provides free propaganda trips to Israel for young Jews.

LEN BLAVATNIK

A third billionaire backer using his financial clout to pressure Columbia is Soviet-born oligarch Len Blavatnik, who demanded that the university protestors be “held to account.” Leaked messages reveal that for Blavatnik, this meant using the full weight of the law against protestors.

Blavatnik was a member of a secret WhatsApp group created in October 2023 that included many prominent Americans, former Israeli prime ministers Naftali Bennett and Benny Gantz, and Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Michael Herzog. Its mission was, in its own words, to “change the narrative” in favor of Israel and “help win the war” for U.S. public opinion. This included donating to pro-Israel political candidates and trying to pressure black celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Jay-Z and LeBron James to publicly “condemn antisemitism” – i.e., attempting to conflate the protestors with racists.

Blavatnik also bankrolls Birthright and the U.K. Friends of the Association for the Wellbeing of Israel’s Soldiers and has funded at least 120 scholarships for former IDF soldiers. Together, Kraft, Cooperman and Blavatnik are thought to have donated nearly $100 million to Columbia.

IDAN OFER

From Columbia, the protests quickly spread across America, including to many of the country’s most prestigious institutions, including Harvard.

From the start, the university was actively hostile to the protest movement and suspended dozens of protestors, effectively stopping them from graduating. This hostility is no doubt in part due to the university’s big-money donors pulling out en masse since October 7. Chief among these is Israeli shipping magnate Idan Ofer, who cited what he called “the lack of clear evidence of support from the university’s leadership for the people of Israel” and expressed his dismay that the Massachusetts college would not condemn Hamas strongly enough.

Ofer is a crucial player in Israeli intelligence. As a previous MintPress News investigation revealed, his family’s Zodiac Maritime cargo ships have regularly been used to secretly ferry Israeli commandos around the Middle East for assassination operations. This includes the killing of Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai and Palestinian Liberation Organization leader Khalil al-Wazir in Tunisia.

LESLIE WEXNER

Another billionaire apparently “stunned and sickened” by Harvard’s pro-Hamas positions is former Victoria’s Secret CEO Leslie Wexner. Apart from Wexner’s exceptionally close and well-publicized connections to child sex traffickers and Israeli intelligence asset Jeffrey Epstein, Wexner is a major donor to Israeli causes.

A 2007 list of potential political donors compiled by Benjamin Netanyahu includes Wexner prominently. (Also included were Ofer’s brother Eyal, Blavtnik, and Donald Trump). In 2023, Wexner donated a six-figure sum to AIPAC, the chief pro-Israel force in American politics.

MARC ROWAN

Nowhere, however, has the elite backlash to student protests been as bitter as at the University of Pennsylvania. Leading the charge to suppress pro-Palestine sentiment on campus there has been Marc Rowan. The billionaire investor demanded that his side must “exact a price” on students who express solidarity with Palestine. “These kids who are marching, they don’t think about it because there’s been no price to pay,” he explained, suggesting that they should never be allowed to work again: “I would not hire you if you were anti-Black. I wouldn’t hire if you were anti-gay. I wouldn’t hire you if you were anti-anything. Why would I hire an antisemite?” he stated, effectively conflating antisemitism with criticism of the Israeli government.

Rowan strongly opposed UPenn’s hosting of a Palestinian literature festival in 2023, demanding that college president Liz Magill and UPenn board chair Scott Bok be fired. After October 7, Rowan and his allies succeeded in forcing both from their jobs.

Rowan has tremendous influence at his alma mater, primarily because of his extraordinarily deep pockets. In 2018, for instance, he donated $50 million to the Wharton School of Business at Pennsylvania. But like with Columbia and Harvard’s big-money benefactors, he is far from a neutral actor on the subject of Israel and Palestine. In fact, he has considerable business interests in Israel. He has described himself as someone who has a “building and overwhelming commitment” to the country and “looks to the IDF and to what Israel does” for guidance.

Rowan and other oligarchs, Jonathon Jacobson and Ronald Lauder, helped organize a university funding strike until their demands were met. Jacobson, who claimed that the university refuses to stand for American values, is the chairman of the Institute for National Security Studies, an Israeli think tank whose current director is former IDF intelligence chief Amos Yadlin. Unsurprisingly, for a man of this background, he has a long history of making donations to pro-Israel groups in the U.S.

Lauder, meanwhile, is even more ingratiated with the Israeli establishment than Jacobson. A close confidant and supporter of Netanyahu, he was appointed a negotiator for Israel with the government of Syria in 1998. His presence at a One Jerusalem rally in front of religious and nationalist extremists in 2001 led to a boycott of the Estée Lauder brand across the Muslim world.

ACADEMIC COLLABORATION

In addition to pressure from donors, elite U.S. universities have close academic and business ties to Israel. For example, Columbia announced last year that it would open a “global center” in Tel Aviv, which would serve as a research hub for academics and graduate students. This would expand the university’s dealings in Israel, where students can already pursue a joint degree with Tel Aviv University or study abroad in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. This development, however, will only benefit Israelis, as Palestinians from the West Bank, Gaza and elsewhere are generally barred from entering Israel.

The plans for a new global center drew heavy criticism from Columbia faculty members, nearly 100 of whom signed a letter asking it to reconsider the decision, given Israel’s human rights record. Moreover, in recent years, many Columbia academics have been barred from entering Israel, likely because of their political views. These include Rashid Kalidi, the Edward Saïd Professor of Modern Arab Studies, and law professor Katherine M. Franke, who was detained and interrogated by Israeli authorities for 14 hours before being deported.

Yet, when it comes to American educational institutions, Columbia’s Israeli collaboration is not unusual. In 2003, Cornell University and the U.S.-Israel Binational Agricultural Research and Development Fund established a program for joint agricultural research. In 2014, Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs announced a joint program with the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy at IDC Herzliya in Israel. (The Lauder School is named after its founder and benefactor, Ronald Lauder, a longtime advocate for the Zionist cause). The University of California signed a memorandum of understanding with Israel’s National Technological Innovation Authority to increase cooperation between the two organizations.

Despite the growing movement calling for an academic boycott of Israeli institutions, intellectual collaboration between American and Israeli academics has grown. Between 2006 and 2015, there was a 45% increase in the number of articles in academic journals whose authors included researchers affiliated with both American and Israeli universities.

This collaboration was primarily among elite institutions. Topping the list of schools was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which, between 2006 and 2015, had 1,835 joint publications with researchers from Israeli institutions. MIT was followed by the University of California, Berkeley, Columbia, Harvard and Stanford, respectively. The most common fields of research were medicine, physics and astronomy, biochemistry and biology. Tel Aviv University was the most prevalent Israeli collaborator.

PAID FOR BY ISRAEL

However, more controversial than the academic collaboration is the Israeli government’s direct funding of American educational institutions. MIT, for example, is awash in Israeli cash. Scientists Against Genocide, a group at MIT, report that, since 2015, the university has received over $11 million in authorized research funding from the Israeli Ministry of Defense. This cash has reached various departments, including Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Biological Engineering, Physics, Aeronautics and Astronautics, Materials Science and Engineering, and Civil and Environmental Engineering.

MIT labs and centers receiving funding include The Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems, the Computer Science And Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the Research Laboratory of Electronics.

The money has paid for research that directly benefits the Israeli military and helps them in their campaigns against the civilian population of Palestine. For example, one MIT project funded by Israel since 2022 is titled “Autonomous Robotic Swarms: Distributed Coordination and Perception.” According to Scientists Against Genocide, the research has helped the IDF carry out aerial drone bombings, surveil protestors, and drop tear gas on Palestinians. Israel is known to be developing flocks of small autonomous drone aircraft guided by artificial intelligence to locate targets, direct airstrikes and aid military advances.

Another project, “Planning and Sensing Algorithms for Underwater Persistent Monitoring,” has seen the Israeli Ministry of Defense give MIT $1.5 million to develop technology to help them police the Mediterranean Sea. Scientists Against Genocide have suggested that this has helped Israel enforce a naval blockade against Gaza, including targeting fishing ships to prevent Gazans from being able to feed themselves.

Israel has long limited the amount of food entering Gaza, keeping residents on a “diet.” However, during its seven-month-long assault on the densely-populated strip, the food crisis has reached critical levels. The United Nations has warned that famine is imminent, and its high commissioner for human rights, Volker Türk, suggested Israel was carrying out a war crime by using starvation as a weapon.

TIES TO THE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX

It could be argued that MIT could reasonably be accused of directly abetting a genocide in Gaza. However, MIT and other elite institutions are under enormous governmental pressure from the other side. Its president, Sally Kornbluth, as well as Harvard president Claudine Gay and Pennsylvania’s Magill, were brought before Congress and grilled on their universities’ alleged support for Hamas and indifference to antisemitism. The case made national news and focused waves of pressure on universities nationwide.

The U.S., of course, has an extremely close relationship with Israel, using it as an outpost of its power in the Middle East. Washington has vetoed successive bills at the United Nations that attempt to address the dire situation, including those calling for a ceasefire and full Palestinian statehood. The U.S. supplies Tel Aviv with nearly $4 billion worth of military aid each year, and in April, Congress voted to send $17 billion of additional U.S. taxpayer money. Critics have blasted the aid as pointless at best and supporting a genocide at worst. But President Biden maintains that every penny given to Israel is money well spent and has stated that if Israel did not exist, the United States would have to invent one.

American support for Israel comes at more than just a monetary cost. The U.S.’s international reputation is sinking. A recent poll shows that a majority of people in Southeast Asia would now choose China over the U.S. if forced to choose, with Washington’s continued backing of Israel being a critical factor in this shift. A number of American officials have also publicly resigned from their positions in protest. Lily Greenberg Call, the first Jewish Biden appointee to publicly resign over Gaza, left her job as special assistant to the chief of staff at the Interior Department. Explaining her decision, Greenberg Call wrote:

The President has the power to call for a lasting ceasefire, to stop sending weapons to Israel, and to condition aid. The United States has used nearly no leverage throughout the last eight months to hold Israel accountable; quite the opposite. We have enabled and legitimized Israel’s actions with vetoes of UN resolutions designed to hold Israel accountable. President Biden has the blood of innocent people on his hands.”

“The United States has long enabled Israeli war crimes and the status quo of apartheid and occupation. That status quo does not keep Israelis safe, nor Jews around the world.”

Each campus protest is different. But they generally share the same goal: pressuring their universities into divesting their endowments from Israel and from companies linked to the ongoing Israeli occupation. Some have called for cutting academic ties with Israeli universities, while others, such as Cornell and Yale, have asked their schools to stop investing in weapons corporations that are making a killing from the bloodshed.

These requests have precedent. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, a host of American institutions cut off collaboration with Russia almost overnight. Going further back, student protests forced many U.S. universities to sever financial ties with Apartheid South Africa.

But Israel and the military-industrial complex are so intertwined with the U.S. economy that an extensive boycott might prove difficult, especially considering elite American universities’ deep ties to the defense industry. MIT, for example, has entered into long-term partnerships with a host of top weapons manufacturers, including RTX (formerly Raytheon), Lockheed Martin and Boeing, who has leased 100,000 square feet of research and lab space at MIT’s new mixed-use building in Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA.

While corporate media has demonized the students as out-of-touch supporters of terrorism, they enjoy widespread support among their peers. Students approved a resolution calling on MIT to cut all research and financial ties to the Israeli military, with 63.7% of undergraduates and 70.5% of graduates voting in favor of it. American adults aged between 18 and 44 support the nationwide protests by a ratio of 4:3.

THE CRACKDOWN

Authorities, however, have been in little mood to negotiate, and images of black-clad riot police beating up and dragging away students and faculty members have gone viral across the globe.

MintPress spoke with Bryce Greene, a student organizer at the University of Indiana Bloomington, who told us how the administration collaborated with police to suppress the growing movement:

“The night before we put our encampment up, the administration changed the rules of the space we were using and used that rule change to launch a military-level police assault on peaceful demonstrators. The university sanctioned armored vehicles, riot troops, assault weapons, shotguns, grenade launchers, a chopper circling overhead, a surveillance drone, and even a sniper on the roof.”

“On day one, militarized police swept into the camp and arrested dozens of people,” Greene said. Undaunted, protestors returned two days later and were met with similar levels of force. Greene was arrested and received a five-year ban from campus, something he attributes to his longtime student organizing.

The story at Indiana is far from unique. At MIT, more than 200 armed riot police stormed the protest camp at 4 am on May 11, destroying the encampment and arresting peaceful protestors. Harvard suspended the university’s Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee and has taken action against individual students. Many are now facing eviction from student housing and even deportation. Meanwhile, UPenn has blocked protest leaders from campus. Seniors believe this will affect their ability to graduate or receive their degrees. As of May 22, there have been well over 3,000 arrests nationwide.

SHREDDING THE FIRST AMENDMENT

After a surprise attack by Hamas, Israel began its campaign on violence in Gaza on October 7. Relentless bombing of the tightly-packed strip has caused tens of thousands of deaths and led to nearly 2 million people being displaced in what is the worst episode of genocidal violence in Palestine since the 1948 Nakba when three-quarters of a million Palestinians were forced from their homes at gunpoint to prepare the ground for a Jewish state. Multiple international bodies, including the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, and Amnesty International, have used the word “genocide” in discussing Israeli actions in Gaza. President Biden, however, rejected that interpretation and gave Israel his full support.

This unconditional backing is seriously harming Biden’s polling numbers. A majority of Democrat voters consider Israel’s actions to constitute genocide, and young Americans are abandoning support for him in droves.

Those groups, in particular, draw on alternative sources of news for Israel and Palestine. Polls show that young people who receive their news from TikTok and other social media (and not through the filter of corporate news) are most likely to hold a negative view of Israel’s actions. The Biden administration’s response has been to simply threaten the complete closure of TikTok in the United States. But it is far from clear whether this authoritarian measure will succeed in stemming the growing tide of Palestinian solidarity that has been building for years, partially down to the tireless work of activists on campuses across the nation.

Despite the campus demonstrations being overwhelmingly peaceful, authorities have chosen to crack down harshly upon them, shredding the First Amendment in the process. Why have both universities and the government shown virtually zero tolerance towards those protesting against genocide? Firstly, because so many big-money university benefactors are themselves committed Zionists and have deep ties to the Israeli state.

This raises the question of whether these so-called charitable donations are so charitable in the first place. For one, America’s super-wealthy often receive tax write-offs for their contributions. Secondly, it gives them excessive power to control the directions of the institutions they are funding. Should wealthy individuals be able to dictate university policy for tens of thousands of people? Many would suggest that this is profoundly anti-democratic.

As we have seen, universities themselves also have deep academic and even financial connections to the state of Israel, making the students’ divestment demands particularly sensitive. This is all happening in a context where the government continues to pledge its full support to Israel and its war aims and has moved to crack down on anti-Israel speech, attempting to make it functionally illegal to openly oppose Israel’s expansionist policies. Israel has long been a political third rail in America. The thousands of students being arrested are learning that in real-time.

Ireland, Spain, Norway to Recognize Palestinian State

Ireland, Spain and Norway will officially recognize Palestine as a state in a move announced on Wednesday.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the decision was based on peace, justice and democracy and was essential for the peace process.

He added that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “still playing deaf ears… he is still bombing hospitals and schools and punishing women and children with hunger and cold.”

“This recognition is not against Israel, is not against the Jews. It is not in favor of Hamas which is something that has been said. This recognition is not against anyone, it is in favor or peace and coexistence.”

Meanwhile, Ireland’s Prime Minister Simon Harris highlighted the “appalling” conditions in Gaza as well as the starvation and humanitarian catastrophe.

“A two-state solution is the only way out of the generational cycles of violence, retaliation and resentment…”

The Irish Foreign Minister, Micheál Martin, has confirmed Ireland’s move will take place on May 28.

“Today, we state clearly our unambiguous support for the equal right to security, dignity, and self-determination for the Palestinian and Israeli peoples,” Martin said.

For their part, Norway’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister also announced their country would recognize Palestine as a state from 28 May, with the territorial demarcation between Palestine and the Zionist entity to be based on the borders from before 4 June 1967.

In a written statement, Norway’s prime minister said Palestinians have a “fundamental, independent right to self-determination” and Israelis and Palestinians have a “right to live in peace in their respective states”.

European Union members Slovenia and Malta have also indicated in recent weeks that they plan to make the recognition also, arguing it is essential for lasting peace in the region.

Reactions

Following the announcement on Wednesday, the Zionist entity said it was recalling its envoys to Ireland and Norway for “urgent consultations”.

“I am sending Ireland and Norway a clear message: Israel will not back down against those who undermine its sovereignty and endanger its security,” Israeli foreign minister said.

Hamas, on its part, welcomed the move by the three European countries, considering the recognition as a “step towards recognizing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.”

A reading in Joe Biden’s letter to Hertzel

Biden’s unwavering support for “Israel” vs. the students’ support for Palestine (Illustrated by Hady Dbouk; Al Mayadeen English)

The students of over 70 American universities expressed in their graduation ceremony the noblest feelings of the conscience of the American people.

But what Biden doesn’t know is that he and his entire system will not be able in the near future to guarantee the security of “Israel”, because he and the Zionist entity will not be able to kill the growing consciousness among American and Western young men and women toward the rights of the Palestinian people in their homeland and of the gross injustices committed against these people during the last eight decades. These young students of men and women in American and Western universities who are taking noble stands in support of helpless Palestinians are going to be the rulers in the future when Biden and his like-minded people will no longer be there and when the innocent blood of all these martyrs of children, women, journalists, scientists, doctors, and others will come to fruition in restoring the just and inalienable rights of the Palestinians, which were undermined by tyrants, occupiers, and terrorists, as well as their supporters for decades.

In his letter to the head of the Zionist entity on the 76th occasion of Nakbah (which they call “Independence Day”), Biden said, “My commitment to the security of Israel is solid and it is necessary that we work together,” adding, “The commitment of the United States to the security of Israel is unshaken.” This statement renders all of Biden’s alleged efforts in the course of working for peace in the region and creating a better future for all its people meaningless. After all, the absolute commitment of the United States to the security of “Israel”, drowning it with money and armaments to perpetrate genocide, and using the VETO in the Security Council to prevent anyone from taking it to task is the most important factor that enabled this entity to perpetrate horrendous genocide against the Palestinian people that has no parallel in modern history.

There is no doubt that Biden and his aides, who are not even embarrassed to say, “We found no evidence of Israel committing genocide” and who give shameful, illogical, and contradictory statements… there is no doubt that they are basing their hopes on conspiratorial partners who are prepared to cooperate with them to inflict more injustice on these great Palestinian people and to complement other unlawful accords that they historically seek in their desperate attempts to silence those people who truly belong to their homeland and who are prepared to pay sacrifices to keep their rights on it.

But what Biden and his followers are going to discover is that the Palestinian cause is no longer reliant on their will and they are no longer able to trade the rights of the Palestinian people with some short-sighted personal advantages. The Palestinian cause has reached today a very crucial juncture in which it has transcended from being a regional, Arab, or even Islamic cause to being a human cause that moves and influences free consciences everywhere in the world. It also plants awareness in the minds of the youth, which will certainly be translated into action that ends the occupation and Western tyranny and inspires a new future not only for Palestinians but for humanity at large. The Palestinian cause will liberate the international will from injustice and tyranny and will contribute to the emergence of a multipolar world system in which neither the US nor its Western partners will be able to facilitate the perpetration of all these crimes against humanity under the sight and hearing of the entire world.

The students of the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Minnesota University, along with the students of Colombia University and 70 other American universities expressed in their graduation ceremony the noblest feelings of the conscience of American people. Each one of them carried a board greeting Gaza, calling for an end to the genocide, chanting: “Palestine is free from the river to the sea,” Each one of them held the board in front of them so that it could be seen before they walked to receive their degrees. There is no doubt that their brave and noble stand in support of people who are facing the most heinous types of injustice is more important than the degree they were awarded. The degrees do not define them; they define the degrees, define themselves, and give merit to the best traits of the American people. As the degrees prove their academic capabilities and performance, their courageous and noble stand in support of a people who suffer today from horrifying injustice is a very honorable stand, which they and their children would be proud of. Those young men and women are going to be the governors in the future, and they will undoubtedly absolve themselves from the shameful legacy of successive American administrations, especially Biden’s, and open a new page that represents acclaimed American values. In every domain in the US, the first thing they stress is the principle of a “win-win” situation, except with regard to the Arab cause, in which they commit themselves to the security of the Zionist entity at the expense of the lands, lives, and the very existence of the Arabs in their homeland.

From this perspective, we can understand the statement of Josep Borrell, the high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, when he said that the United States is showing fatigue in its Middle East diplomacy in seeking a solution. The principal cause for this fatigue is that American diplomacy seeks to abrogate Palestinian rights in their homeland and is bent on calling that a solution. That is why all Western media promoted the Israeli maxim of “eliminating Hamas”, while the true intention or plan was to wage a war of genocide against all Palestinians. That is also why the Zionists refused every version submitted by mediators because they are bent on this genocide against all Palestinian people and all their resistance to occupation. The genocide was perpetrated against all Palestinian people and all their institutions, schools, universities, hospitals, mosques, churches, bakeries, and anything that helps to make life possible.

That is why what the Zionists had perpetrated in Gaza and Palestine, in general, is an international issue and no longer only an Arab or Islamic one. Just as the struggle to liberate South Africa from Apartheid was an international cause, so is Palestine today. South Africa honored its history by submitting a case to the International Court of Justice to take punitive measures against “Israel” and shed light on the danger of what was committed against Palestinian civilians. Leaders in Latin America also took honorable stands in support of the Palestinians, and 143 countries in the General Assembly voted to grant Palestine full UN membership.

What is required today from all sectors and all international syndicates and professional unions is action, each in their domain to bring “Israel” to task, expel it from international forums, register the names of those who were victims of this genocide, and lead a legal case in international courts against “Israel”. The Israelis have killed athletes and their trainers and referees. They killed over a 100 academicians, professors, and researchers. They killed hundreds of doctors and medical staff. International organizations in all these fields and other fields should boycott the Israeli entity, isolate it, and drag it to the International Court of Justice for all these crimes.

There is no doubt that the US and Western countries in general have morally fallen to the abyss during this horrifying aggression on Gaza. The only ones who restored some of the hope in our hearts are those brave and noble university students, as well as the officials and Jewish people who resigned from their posts in protest of the genocide and in defense of the Palestinian people and of what is left of their countries’ credibility.

When real names and numbers of those killed in Gaza are released, world forces will move on guided by the experience and example of South Africa. By then, Biden and his aides will be in the dark pages of history, and only those who fought, resisted, and persisted in defending their homelands and those who supported them will shine in history pages forever. That is when the world would have moved beyond the ugly imperialist, Zionist system to a much safer and happier multipolar world.

Possible ICC arrest warrant against Netanyahu: US hypocrisy, explained

May 18, 2024

By Qamar Taleb

This is how ICC arrest warrants work, their importance, why Netanyahu might not get away with murder this time, and how the US has continued to be a hypocrite.

Here’s an idea for a potential bedtime story: There once was a very very bad man leading an over 200-day genocide against the people of Palestine in Gaza, they called him Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also known as “Bibi”. In conformity with a belief popular among Israeli settlers who stole Palestinian land over 75 years ago supported by some bad bad imperialist countries, Bibi thought he was above the law.

You cannot entirely blame him as the world helped enable this belief by constantly overlooking the fact that Palestine is occupied, its people are being forced out of their homes, murdered, raped, tortured, detained and the list of horrible crimes goes on. Until one day Bibi sensed that there might be a chance he was not actually above the law as word spread about the International Criminal Court (ICC) potentially slapping him, alongside other bad men, with arrest warrants.

Bibi then rushed to his beloved mother, let’s call her the United States. He cried for help in a video online asking “free leaders of the world to stand against the ICC outrageous assault” and his mother threatened to retaliate against the court.

So far, this story does not have an end as it will determined by what happens next, and how everything plays out and unfolds.

On a serious note, however, here is a deeper legal and political dive into the importance of such arrest warrants and why it might be hard for Netanyahu to get away with murder this time with a sprinkle of US hypocrisy.

How legal proceedings at the Court work

The ICC in the Hague has jurisdiction over four types of crimes:

  • Genocide
  • Crimes against humanity,
  • War crimes
  • Crime of aggression

The legal process in the court includes six stages:

  1. Preliminary examinations
  2. Investigations
  3. The pre-trial stage
  4. The trial stage
  5. The appeals stage
  6. The enforcement of the sentence.

On 17 November 2023, the Chief Prosecutor of the Court, Karim Khan, issued a statement announcing that based on a referral five Court States Parties: South Africa, Bangladesh, Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Comoros, and Djibouti, his office confirms that it is investigating the situation in the State of Palestine.

Khan said that this investigation began on March 3, 2021, and includes actions committed in Gaza, the West Bank, and the eastern part of al-Quds since June 13, 2014, that can amount to crimes listed in the Rome Statute. The Chief Prosecutor said that this investigation is ongoing and “extends to the escalation of hostilities and violence since the attacks that took place on 7 October 2023.”

Why the arrest warrants are vital

In the investigation stage of the legal process, the Prosecution can request the ICC judges from the pre-trial chamber, after piling up evidence and identifying a suspect, to issue an arrest warrant against the latter to summon for appearance that is if the suspect is willing to cooperate with the court and appear voluntarily.

Article 63 of the Rome Statute says that the accused, labeled as a suspect at the pre-trial stage, should be present during the trial. This means that the judicial process cannot begin without the presence of the accused and in turn, without the arrest of the suspect, their summon, or voluntary presence.

So, for the Court to actually be able to move to the hearings stage following the investigation stage, it is legally required to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu and other individuals it has deemed as suspects in the case. Knowing that “Israel” lied at the International Court of Justice before in front of the whole world and that it still to this day denies all crimes it has committed in Gaza, one would expect it not to be cooperative with the Court, especially amid recent statements attempting to discredit the Court and throw in “the right of self-defense” again.

Netanyahu will most probably not voluntarily appear at the Court, so who would assist in executing his arrest especially since “Israel” is not part of the parties of the Court?

Primarily, the power to execute the arrest warrants is vested in the States which are part of the Court. According to Article 59 of the Statute any State Party that has gotten a request for provisional arrest or for arrest and surrender “shall immediately take steps to arrest the person in question in accordance
with its laws and the provisions of Part 9.”

According to Article 86 of the Rome Statute, “States Parties shall, in accordance with the provisions of this Statute, cooperate fully with the Court in its investigation and prosecution of crimes within the jurisdiction of the Court.”

Not only that but according to Article 88 of the Statute, “States Parties shall ensure that there are procedures available under their national law for all of the forms of cooperation which are specified under” Part 9 of the Statute which addresses international cooperation and judicial assistant. Article 89 also addresses how States should comply with requests for arrest and surrender by the Court.

All of these provisions mean that even if Netanyahu does not cooperate with the Court any State that is a member of the Court should cooperate with the latter and aid in executing the arrest warrant which would limit Netanyahu’s movements and put further pressure on him especially since arrest warrants remain in effect until otherwise ordered by the Court.

The responsibility does not fall on State Parties only as the Court can also ask non-state Parties for assistance in the arrest of the suspect especially if the trigger behind the Court’s jurisdiction is the United Nations Security Council as all relevant UN Member States are bonded by the duty to cooperate even if they are not a State Party to the Rome Statute.

Ne bis in idem

Article 20 of the Rome Statute addresses the Ne bis in idem also known as the principle of complementarity which means that the ICC can practice its jurisdiction when the national courts have failed or are unwilling to investigate the crimes within the jurisdiction of the court.

First things first, the fact that the Court is in the investigations phase means that it probably already decided that there are not any genuine national proceedings. Why? Well, according to the Court itself during the preliminary examinations phase, the Office of the Prosecutor must decide whether there is “sufficient evidence of crimes of sufficient gravity falling within the ICC’s jurisdiction, whether there are genuine national proceedings, and whether opening an investigation would serve the interests of justice and of the victims.”

So this implies that the Court decided on all of the above including that there are not “genuine national proceedings.”

On the other hand, how reliable are the Courts of the occupation in this sense? And no, this is not coming from the fact that it is quite literally an occupation, but from actual live examples of how Netanyahu has attempted to overhaul the occupation’s “legal system” or how he was even exempted from accountability.

In three cases filed in 2019, Netanyahu has been charged with fraud, bribery, and breach of trust also known as cases 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000.

In March 2023, the Knesset approved a law that gave Benjamin Netanyahu immunity from prosecution on criminal charges. This law prevents a sitting Prime Minister from being dismissed from office and announced as incapable of fulfilling their duties.

In July 2023, the Knesset also passed the “reasonableness law” which took away the power of occupation’s the Supreme Court to declare government decisions unreasonable. Who was the Prime Minister back then? It was Benjamin Netanyahu. It was widely announced and reported as Netanyahu trying to overhaul the occupation’s “legal system”.

These are to name a few of how much power and influence he has in occupied Palestine. They cannot even hold him accountable for such crimes, how would they hold him accountable for a genocide they approve of?

Irrelevance of official capacity

But would he not benefit from his capacity as an official? Well, according to Article 27 (1) of the Rome Statute, the latter applies equally to “all persons without any distinction based on official capacity.”

Not only this but it also specifies that the “official capacity as a Head of State or Government, a member of a Government or parliament, an elected representative, or a government official shall in no case exempt a person from criminal responsibility” under the Statute, and should not even affect the sentence.

The most important part is immunities. Section 2 of the same Article says that immunities or special procedural rules linked to the official capacity of a person under both national and international law “shall not bar the Court from exercising its jurisdiction over such a person.”

Some legal scholars might argue that this only applies to State Parties of the ICC, or might argue based on special mission immunity or certain precedents, however, an article by Hugh King, Judges’ Clerk to the High Court of New Zealand at Auckland, addresses this issue and mentions the case of Prosecutor v Charles Ghankay Taylor, specifically submissions of the Amicus Curiae on Head of State immunity by Philippe Sands and Alison Macdonald.

King says that international tribunals mentioned by Sand and Macdonald all have one thing in common and that is “consent of States whose nationals were being tried.” So, he says, this consent alongside the constitutive basis of an international tribunal explains why international tribunals can actually try State officials and overlook immunities.

Referencing the examples that happened in international tribunals again, King said that Statutes can steer away from the rules set by customary international law rules on immunities because they were “were adopted by the Security Council under Chapter VII of the Charter, and as such, bind all UN member States.”

According to Article 103 of the UN Charter also mentioned by King, the obligations of all member states under the Charter prevail over any other obligation through a different international agreement. This means, as he said, that UN member States therefore indirectly have consented to waiving their immunities.

“Mother” is a hypocrite

In 1943 the United Nations War Crimes Commission(UNWCC) was established in London with a satellite office in China by seventeen allied nations, including China and India, before the end of World War II and it had its main focus on war crimes.

Guess who was deeply involved in its creation and work? The United States of America which back then supported launching a permanent international criminal tribunal through a multilateral treaty.

In 1945, the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg was created, also by deep US involvement, to try German wartime leaders for crimes against peace, crimes against humanity, and war crimes and it specifically stated that individuals are accountable are accountable for international crimes regardless of their official position. It was followed by another similar tribunal a year later to try crimes by Japanese leaders.

In 1993, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was established which of course, once again, the US had a deep involvement in and even took part in forming its statute and other essential documents. This also applied to the establishment of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in 1994.

In 1995, the US was part of the Ad Hoc Committee on the establishment of the ICC and then later took part in a preparatory session before the Rome conference and the conference itself as it even aided in drafting the Rome Statute but then ended up voting against it.

In 1999, the US was quick to draft a Foreign Relations Authorization Act including prohibitions against sending any US financial support to the ICC and the extradition of any US citizen to a foreign country that may surrender them to the ICC.

But in 2000, it aided in drafting the ICC Rules of Procedure and Evidence alongside the Elements of Crimes part of the Rome Statute. It then signed the Rome Statute but did not ratify it and declared in 2002 that it had no intention of ratifying it.

This back and forth went on for years after as the US took part in creating the basis of a Court it clearly refuses to be a part of and for obvious reasons that were evident in a pattern of US behavior over the years utilizing international organizations, laws, courts for its benefit then standing against them when they scratch those benefits, just like it is currently doing in the case of “Israel.”

As previously mentioned, it is still not clear how the bedtime story will end, but in one way or another, it might not look very good for the US and “Israel” even away from all the legal and political talk, “You reap what you sow” has always come true and if there is one thing you can learn from How to Get Away with Murder is that, you do not.
