The Battle of Rafah: a short step to regional war

All eyes are on Rafah as Israel prepares to mount an invasion to expel Palestinians or decimate them. It is this pivotal battle that will either force Israel into a ceasefire or thrust the region into an all-out, multi-front war.

The temporary truce struck on 24 November between the Hamas resistance movement and the Israeli government could have paved the way toward successive truces and potentially a sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

But the opportunity was squandered by Tel Aviv, who viewed the continuation of its genocidal war as a means to reshape Gaza’s political and security landscape under the guise of ‘restoring deterrence’ and mitigating domestic fallout from Hamas’ 7 October Al-Aqsa Flood Operation.

Now, nearly six months since the commencement of what Israel calls a ‘war of survival and existence’ against Gaza, it has become clear that the occupation state’s military aggression cannot unseat Hamas from either the Strip or the broader Palestinian political arena.

The recent flurry of indirect Hamas–Israel negotiations held in Paris, Cairo, and Doha have revealed a stark political reality: Hamas is the primary Palestinian negotiating party where Gaza is concerned. This tacit acknowledgment by Tel Aviv marks the strategic failure of one of Israel’s dual objectives set forth last October, aimed at eradicating Hamas and its allied resistance factions in the Strip.

Bibi’s political interests v domestic backlash

This reality raises questions about the potential pathways available to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he struggles with immense international pressure to stop the carnage. Will he persist with the war on Gaza and risk global pariah status, or will he be compelled to pursue a politically costly settlement? The latter option, it should be noted, will not be an easy fix. It could potentially unleash a storm of domestic backlash within Israel, with various political factions eager to hold him accountable from multiple angles.

Since Netanyahu abandoned the truce in November, prominent Israeli political commentators and even former prime ministers have been surprisingly unanimous in their assessment. They argue that Netanyahu’s decision to prolong the war serves mainly his personal political interests, allowing him to project an illusion of victory while evading political, security, and judicial scrutiny.

Accordingly, Netanyahu’s stance remains firmly opposed to a war settlement. He has instead doubled down on the necessity of eliminating the military capabilities of Hamas and its allies, and is ostensibly pursuing an ‘absolute victory’ through total war.

The prime minister’s roadmap hinges on continuing the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. In this scenario, he envisions the Battle of Rafah as the decisive climax that will definitively render the already terminal ‘two-state solution’ obsolete and permanently sever any ties between Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

The Battle of Rafah thus emerges as a pivotal juncture, delineating two competing trajectories: one driven by regional and international efforts towards a negotiated settlement, and the other dictated solely by Netanyahu’s ambitions.

Regional ramifications and Egypt’s dilemma

This raises complex questions about whether Netanyahu can prolong the war and influence regional and international actors – to buy time, if you will – all while factoring in the delicate balance of power involving Egypt and the wider regional war against other members of the Axis of Resistance.

Indeed, the Battle of Rafah presents a multi-level challenge for Egypt, encompassing political, security, and popular dimensions. Should the Israeli army invade Rafah, it will have significant implications for Cairo’s relations with Tel Aviv, in addition to severely impacting Egypt’s domestic security landscape.

A recent poll by the Washington Institute for Near East Studies revealed that three-quarters of Egyptians view Hamas positively. This popular sentiment influences Egyptian policy regarding potential Israeli actions in Rafah.

On 10 March, The New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported warnings from Egyptian officials on the potential suspension of the Camp David Accords if Israel were to attack Rafah.

Diaa Rashwan, head of the Egyptian Information Service, emphasized the seriousness of Israel’s occupation of the Philadelphi Corridor – a buffer zone on the Sinai–Gaza border designated by the Camp David agreement – stating it poses a grave threat to Cairo–Tel Aviv relations.

Dealing with the potential mass influxes of Gazan civilians seeking refuge and Palestinian fighters crossing into Egyptian territory also poses significant logistical and security challenges. This scenario also raises questions about the Israeli army’s potential incursions into Egyptian territory and how the Egyptian military would respond.

Moreover, any intensification of pressure on Rafah or a full-scale Israeli invasion will lead to widespread regional ramifications, potentially including the unraveling of the Abraham Accords. The Axis of Resistance has made it clear that the elimination of Hamas is unacceptable and, if threatened, may trigger a regional war.

Complicating matters further is the lack of substantive US pressure on Israel to halt its actions in Gaza. While the Biden White House seeks a ‘credible operational plan,’ it has not unequivocally opposed an attack on Rafah. This ambivalence enables and even emboldens Netanyahu to continue his military operations.

Rafah could reshape the region

Regardless of the outcome of the Battle of Rafah, both Israeli and US perspectives interpret it as a campaign directed against Hamas, which they view as an extension of Iranian influence in the region. This narrative aligns with what Thomas Friedman, writing for the New York Times, referred to as the new “Biden Doctrine,” which emphasizes confronting Iran and its allies in West Asia. This marks a significant shift in US strategy since 1979.

The convergence of US and Israeli interests casts suspicion on ongoing efforts to bring about a long-term ceasefire, with all eyes focused on the current round of talks in Doha. Amos Harel, writing for Haaretz, frames the discussions as a race toward either a negotiated ceasefire or a potentially expansive regional conflict involving multiple fronts.

Yemen’s Ansarallah movement, which last week expanded its naval operations into the Indian Ocean, has issued a stark warning against a Rafah invasion, threatening a sharp escalation in both sea and air operations, including the closure of the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Similarly, the Lebanese front remains sensitive to developments in Rafah. Despite the northern front’s expansion since the onset of 2024, recent Israeli attacks targeting Baalbek, over 100 kilometers from the southern border, suggest Tel Aviv’s misguided willingness to escalate.

This possibility could spill over into reality if Israel invades Rafah, as the occupation army may resort to preemptive actions to mitigate perceived threats from Lebanese resistance forces.

Overall, the Battle of Rafah will likely reshape the regional conflict, adding new layers to existing pressure fronts. Importantly, it challenges the notion that Hamas stands alone, abandoned in Rafah, as various regional actors, including Iran and its allies, are closely watching and prepared to intervene.

Earlier, Local media reported that an Israeli aircraft was downed in south Lebanon, with videos circulating on social media showing an aircraft on fire and spiraling out of control.

Israeli media reported that sirens sounded in an industrial zone near Afula due to the launch of an interceptor missile.

The Israeli occupation army then confirmed one of its drones was shot down by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

It said: “The David’s Sling medium-range air defense system successfully intercepted a surface-to-air missile fired by Hezbollah at an Israeli drone, but a short while later a second missile struck the aircraft.”

Al-Manar Exclusive: Thousands of Lebanese Mourners Take the Journey of Arbaeen

September 6, 2023

Thousands of mourners mark Imam Hussein’s (AS) Arbaeen in the northeastern Lebanese city of Baalbeck(September 6, 2023).

Areej Fatima Al-Husseini

Thousands of mourners arrived at Sayyeda Khawla (AS) Shrine in Baalbek early this morning to commemorate Imam Hussein’s (AS) Arbaeen.

Pilgrims had begun to march on foot from the northern, western, eastern, and central Bekaa Valley, while others reported that they started marching from the southern suburbs of Beirut, covering around 80 kilometers, in honor of Sayyeda Zainab’s (AS) great sacrifices.

Mourners heading towards Baalbeck on foot to commemorate Imam Hussein’s Arbaeen (September 6, 2023).

Hezbollah marked the occasion with a mourning ceremony at Sayyed Khawla (AS) Shrine which buzzed with thousands of Imam Hussein devotees.

Thousands of mourners then participated in the march which took place across Baalbeck’s streets.

Madeefs

This year’s commemoration was special, as mourners expressed their devotion to Imam Hussein (AS) in inspiring ways. Hundreds of food stalls (called Madeefs) lined the international road between northern Bekaa and Rayak, offering food, beverages, and sweets to pilgrims.

While touring along the road, the Al-Manar English website correspondent met a Lebanese family who had driven all the way from the southern Lebanese village of Maifadoun to serve food for Sayyeda Khawla’s (AS) visitors on this extraordinary day.

Members of this family, young and elderly, had been cooking meals and organizing a Husseini procession with other Bekaai volunteers since Arabeen’s eve.

Their youngest daughter displayed pleasure in what she was doing, confirming that this was not the first time she had helped with meal preparation and distribution.

A Blood Drive on the Way to Baalback

Wid Charity Association was the first to attend the march, where a blood donation drive was organized in collaboration with Saint George Hospital.

“Donating blood to save the lives of others is one of the greatest sacrifices a person can make, especially on the Arbaeen of Imam Hussein (AS), who sacrificed his life to defend Islam and oppose tyranny,” a donor affirmed.

Clean Up Campaign

In an effort to maintain cleanliness during this march, the Baqoun gathering launched the “Cleanliness is the Key to Civilization” campaign.

Preparations for the campaign began a day ahead of the march, with the distribution of 1,000 containers along the road leading to the shrine of Sayyeda Khawla “(AS), beginning at the Sarein Junction, to collect garbage, divided into three types: plastic, glass, cardboard, and cans of mineral beverages, and a third for organic materials.

Nasrallah: Voting is message to those conspiring against resistance

Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah stresses that the United States is covering up corruption in Lebanon while its allies cast the blame on the resistance.

The strongest message sent through the martyrdom of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh is the fact that she is Christian, Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said Friday, in a nod to the Israeli occupation’s indiscriminate criminality that knows no bounds and is not only directed toward Muslims.

“The Israeli enemy killed Christians and Muslims, violated their sanctities, and demolished their homes […] everyone is jeopardized by the policies of the racist and inhumane Israeli occupation that will not change,” Sayyed Nasrallah said during an electoral rally in the northeastern Bekaa region of Lebanon.

He stressed that martyr Abu Akleh was a witness to Israeli criminality and the occupation’s oppression of Palestinians. “The brutal reality of the Israeli enemy has not changed throughout its massacres in Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt.”

Sayyed Nasrallah offered his condolences to the families of the Syrian soldiers who were killed at the hands of terrorist groups in the countryside of Aleppo earlier today.

Bekaa always been integral part of resistance

“The Bekaa region and its people have always been an integral part of the resistance,” Sayyed Nasrallah stressed, citing the people’s support for the resistance since its establishment and their contribution to the founding of the movement. “It is [in Bekaa] that the most important confrontation took place in 1982, which halted the progression of the Israeli enemy.”

“The shelling of the region was not only in revenge for the resistance’s operations, but in compliance with an Israeli policy [Tel Aviv] closely follows to pressure people and to send a message to the people of Bekaa to expel the resistance from the region,” he added.

“They want the people of Bekaa to give up the resistance and its arms through political, financial, and media aggression,” he explained, recalling that the operations had been launched from the region as a whole and led to the martyrdom of many prominent leaders until the entire region was liberated, “and still, the [resistance did not halt its] operations on the Western Bekaa front.”

In the southern region of Bekaa, Sayyed Nasrallah highlighted, “the most prominent and dearest men in Bekaa were martyred, Sayyed Abbas Al-Mousawi and [his wife] Um Yasser.” He also praised the region for its participation in resisting the Israeli occupation during the July war of 2006, mourning the martyrs lost in Baalbek and the Western and Central Bekaa.

“You are Hezbollah, and you are the resistance. It would not be right to say you are with the resistance, because, throughout the past 40 years, you did not refrain from offering your dearest people, and you chose the resistance as your ideology,” the Hezbollah chief underscored.

“There are parties conspiring against your sacrifices and your victories, and your response must be appropriate.”

According to Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the people must not forget those who stood with Lebanon, i.e. Syria and Iran. “They are part of the electoral campaign today. We must also remember those who stood by Israel and offered it support while today, they advocate ‘freedom’ and ‘independence’, especially the United States and several Arab States [who are supporting the occupation] behind closed doors.”

Parties prevented Lebanese Army from battling ISIS on Syria-Lebanon borders

“If the terrorist groups succeded in Syria, they would have jeopardized Bekaa and the entirety of Lebanon […] those who supported the terrorist organizations only cared for toppling the authorities in Syria,” he explained.

Sayyed Nasrallah also revealed that there had been a political decision to prevent the Lebanese Army from combatting the terrorist groups on the borders. “If [the parties that prevented the Army from combatting terrorism] had the majority in the government, they would never dare take a decision as per which the Lebanese Army responds to any aggression.”

Resistance’s weapons never prevented reform

Commenting on the electoral campaigns in the 2022 Lebanese legislative elections, Sayyed Nasrallah said, “We heard many funny things in the slogans and speeches. We saw a remarkable campaign of hatred, and this is an indication of the moral and intellectual decadence of some figures representing themselves as leaders who want to solve crises.”

One of them is responsible for the vanishing of $11 billion and the economic policies that led to the current crises, and he is currently saying that the path toward saving Lebanon starts with liberating the country from Hezbollah,” Sayyed Nasrallah stressed.

He also stressed that there are parties “taking the Lebanese people for fools by fearmongering and spreading misinformation against Hezbollah […] the resistance’s arms never prevented anyone from repairing the power grid and building dams, nor did it take the catastrophic financial policies during the past decades.”

The Hezbollah chief accused the United States and its allies of smuggling depositors’ funds abroad, calling on the parties that “made their electoral lists in the US embassy” to ask Washington to return the smuggled money. He also accused it of preventing investments in Lebanon, covering up for corruption, and working to starve the Lebanese people.

“We heard that on May 15 (the day the elections will be held in Lebanon), this finger (pointing to his index finger) will be broken… I know that this finger infuriates the United States, the terrorists, and the enemies of Lebanon,” Sayyed Nasrallah stressed.

“Casting your ballots on the election day is a message to those conspiring against the resistance and its arms, as well as the future of the Lebanese people,” he concluded by telling the people of Bekaa and Lebanon as a whole.

When Baalbek Defeated “Israel’s” Commandos

When Baalbek Defeated “Israel’s” Commandos

By Latifa Al-Husseini

It had been three weeks since the start of “Israel’s” aggression against Lebanon in July 2006. The “Israelis” were coming under increasing attack while being broken in Bint Jbeil, Aitaroun, and Maroun al-Ras. The settlements of Kiryat Shmona, Kfar Yuval, Kfar Eldad, Safed, Rosh Pinna, Gesher HaZiv, Granot, and Nahariya were under rocket fire from the resistance.

Following atrocious massacres and hundreds of martyrs, Hezbollah’s Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah unveiled the after-Haifa equation. By the 19th day, the enemy began unleashing its anger wherever the opportunity presented itself.

In Lebanon’s Bekaa, reconnaissance planes and fighter jets were hovering from Zahle to the border town of Al-Ain. After a series of disappointments in the southern axes, the “Israeli” War Minister, Amir Peretz, decided to instruct the general staff of the occupation army to attack a medical center in Baalbek’s Tal Al-Abyad district.

The time and place were specified, but assessments about operation pointed to a likely failure before it was even set in motion. At the last minute, when the forces were about to take off, information arrived indicating that the chosen targets would not be on the ground. However, the operation wasn’t canceled due to Peretz’s insistence to move forward.

On the eve of Thursday, July 31, 2006, at 10 p.m., soldiers from the Sayeret Matkal (General Staff Reconnaissance Unit) and Shaldag units were about to launch Operation Sharp and Smooth. The operation was touted among decision-makers as one that would “change the face of the war”. Seven continuous hours of military conflict only made them an example of failure, and weakness.

The night of the famous airdrop

Taher Dabbous, a staffer at the Dar Al-Hikma hospital in Baalbek, told  Al-Ahed News how 200 Zionist soldiers fast-roped into the area in search of a target.

“After we made the decision to evacuate the employees for their own safety, a group of staffers consisting of about 10 people, including an emergency doctor, nurses, radiology and lab technicians, and administrative drivers stayed behind. Their task was to evacuate the wounded from the bombing in surrounding areas, provide first aid, and then transfer them to other hospitals because Dar al-Hikma was on the list of threatened targets,” Dabbous says.

According to Dabbous, the military airdrop began at 10 p.m. with the entire neighborhood coming under shelling in order to isolate the hospital – approximately two kilometers in diameter to prevent anyone from entering. The commando units landed on the eastern side of the hospital where they split into three teams. The first team stationed in the north, the second in the south, and the third jumped off the fence and stayed in the center.

The attack on the hospital did not last long. Soon, clashes ensued. The medical and nursing staff went out to deter the aggressors with the guards’ weapons (individual weapons and Kalashnikovs), according to Dabbous.

The “Israeli” soldiers spent seven hours destroying and attacking. One of their teams stormed the hospital in search of a target that they found no trace of, so instead they destroyed medical equipment and stole hard drives from hospital computers that usually contained information about the staff and the patients.

They also broke windows, destroyed doors, and even planted explosive devices. This vindictive criminal behavior only highlighted their disappointment. They returned to where they came from empty-handed and only left behind more innocent people dead – 11 civilians were martyred in the town of Al-Jamaliah that was near Dar Al-Hikma.

A show

Speaking about the operation, Amir Rapaport, an “Israeli” military affairs commentator, described “what happened as nothing but a show. Officials in the security establishment directed severe criticism at those who led the airdrop because they endangered the lives of 200 soldiers in an operation that was only conducted for advertising purposes.”

According to the commentator, the Zionist military and political leadership wanted to achieve some kind of progress that would alter public opinion about the “Israeli” army having difficulty accomplishing something important in the fight against Hezbollah. The objective of the attain intelligence about the fate of the kidnapped soldiers, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev. However, the operation did nothing.

The lion of Dar Al-Hikma

The Dar Al-Hikma incident proves that the Sun City is insubordinate and cannot be humiliated or broken. The direction of the wind did not come as Amir Peretz desired. The sons of Baalbek managed to thwart the aggressors. They fled under fire. Nurse Atef Amhaz was among those who fought the commandos that night.

On that day, martyr Atef rushed to the hospital to take a shift from one of his colleagues. Those who knew him sensed his fervor since the beginning of the aggression. He volunteered to protect his hometown, Nabha, with a group of young men during the war. They were on the lookout for MK aircraft and anticipating an attack. He did not even care about their espionage activity during that period, and he insisted on challenging it, so he went to the mosque and recited Dua Kumayl to everyone.

He did not panic but prepared himself to meet the Lord. His sister, Khadija Amhaz, tells Al-Ahed that a few days before July 31, 2006, he went to the hairdresser in his village and asked him to groom his beard suitable for those who wanted to meet the Lord.

Martyr Atef had the love for Imam Hussein in him. His fervor prompted him to carry his humble weapon at the hospital from the moment the “Israelis” set foot on the premises. After the military airdrop, Atef called his older brother reassuring him and informed him that he was in Dar Al-Hikma. He then joined the battle.

Martyr Atef confronted the “Israelis”. He clashed with them and fought them like a lion attacking its prey. He stood up and pointed his machine gun toward the enemy. Two bullets hit his head and chest, making him a martyr.

Shortly after dawn prayers, that is after 4 a.m., the night that the Zionists were hoping might change things for them ended. Operation Sharp and Smooth humiliated the “Israelis” – they were not able to take resistance fighters as prisoners nor did they find the kidnapped soldiers.
