Saudi’s Eshki: Our Communication with «Israel» Is Intellectual and Humanitarian

25-10-2017 | 14:34

No longer are Saudi Arabia’s normalization statements with the “Israeli” entity surprising. Not a week that passes by without news or expressive stances regarding the warming relation between Riyadh and Tel Aviv circulate, despite official denial of any personal visits to the apartheid entity.

Anwar Eshki, the retired Saudi general and director of the Middle East Center for Strategic and Legal Studies, has become known for his excessive patronage for the “Israeli” entity and meetings with many of its figures. In an interview with Russia Today, Eshki reiterated his remarks, saying: “The communication between Saudi Arabia and ‘Israel’ is both scientific and intellectual, and not a political communication.”

He went on to say, “The Kingdom’s main objective is the principles approved by the United Nations and agreed upon by the Arabs, it is the Arab ‘peace’ initiative… In ‘Israel’ as in the Arab world, there are extremists and militants. However, there are also non-hardliners in “Israel”. The hardliners in “Israel” have shrunken in numbers.”

In response to a question about the willingness of the Saudi community to accept the idea of publicly normalizing with “Israel”, Eshki said: “As far as I know, and according to what I have heard and what King Abdullah said … there is no normalization with ‘Israel’,” adding that “all issues being raised is a mere distraction. ‘Israel’ should not only recognize the Arab initiative, but also apply it.”

Eshki explained that “Prince Turki al-Faisal and I giving lectures to ‘Israelis’ in America, or in any other region, does not mean normalization, especially that we are not officials [officially appointed],” stressing that “Officially, there is not even a handshake with ‘Israel’,” he claimed.

«Israeli» Official Confirms Saudi’s MbS Visited Tel Aviv

21-10-2017 | 12:25

An “Israeli” official has confirmed that a Saudi prince who was widely reported to have visited the “Israeli” entity back in September was Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi Prince Mohammad bin Salman

In September, “Israeli” and Arab media reported that a Saudi prince had traveled to the entity and had held consultations with senior “Israeli” officials over “regional peace”.

Some news outlets identified the Saudi prince in question as Mohamed bin Salman, who was appointed as the first in line to the Saudi throne by his father, King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, in June. However, there was no official confirmation of the news at the time.

On Friday, however, an “Israeli” official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP Arabic that Mohammed bin Salman had in fact been the prince who visited the “Israeli” entity in September.

This is while Saudi Arabia and the entity do not have formal diplomatic relations. And while there had already been reports that the “Israeli” and Saudi regimes have been tilting toward one another in recent years, a confirmed visit by an official as high in ranking as bin Salman takes the matter to a completely new and potentially explosive level as anti-“Israeli” sentiments continue to be high on the Arab street.

While the “Israeli” entity and Riyadh may be fine with cozying up to one another, many ordinary Arabs, in Saudi Arabia and other Arab states, are firmly opposed to the establishment of ties with the Tel Aviv regime because of its occupation of Palestinian lands and atrocities against the Palestinian population.

The “Israeli” entity’s so-called Transportation and Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz has urged the Saudi king to invite “Israeli” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Riyadh to establish full diplomatic relations. Back in June, “Israeli” War Minister Avigdor Lieberman called for a deal with Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, as a prerequisite for any agreement to resolve the decades-long conflict with the Palestinians.

On Thursday, Lieberman underlined the need for “a full regional agreement” with what he called “all moderate Sunni states, including Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.”

But “Israeli” officials may have also miscalculated the willingness of other Arab governments to establish ties with Tel Aviv. On Wednesday, Kuwaiti National Assembly Speaker Marzouq al-Ghanim furiously told an “Israeli” delegation During an Inter-Parliamentary Union [IPU] conference in Russia to leave the hall, calling “Israeli” officials “occupiers” and “child killers.”

Netanyahu has been rejoicing at the idea of enhanced relations with Arab countries, particularly since Iran struck a deal with six other countries over its nuclear program.

Some observers maintain that the stepped-up activities of the “Israeli” entity and some Arab regimes to establish ties may have been an attempt to compensate for what they believe is a change in the strategic balance in the region.

’Israel’ and the ’Days of Great Anxiety’

“For the first time in its history, “Israel” today needs US military bases on the occupied land of Palestine”

“Today, “Israel” is no longer able to make a decision on its own. And disillusioned are those who believe that the enemy’s government or its military and security institutions are capable of making a war decision in the region without a direct US approval, coverage and input.”

Ibrahim Al Amin

On the eve of the establishment of the “Israeli” entity, and in the decades that followed, we, the Arabs, have placed ourselves in the position of moral responsibility to deny, confirm or declare a decisive position on the massacres committed by the West against the Jews before and during the Second World War. It is a position no one assigned to us, and it is neither our specialty nor our direct responsibility.

Israel

This submission is due to the fact that the “Israeli” entity is going through the most dangerous stage in its history today. Putting aside numerical calculations or data based on theoretical elements, “Israel” has practically entered the stage of transitioning from the time of the “eternal state” to the time of the fallen state. Since an operation of this magnitude requires huge efforts and larger wars, the enemy, before the West, will resort to the narrative of Jewish grievances once again.

Therefore, for the first and last time, we will have the duty to answer a question about any possible solution to the Jewish issue in our country, in connection with the decision to remove the “Israeli” entity. In order not to hold ourselves responsible for what some may see as injustice against the Jews living in “Israel” when their present state is gone, it is worthwhile to return to an easy, simple and clear position: The colonial West, whether with a Crusader, religious, or an oppressive totalitarian background is first and foremost responsible for what happened to the Jews in Europe as it is also responsible for finding a solution to the crisis of the Jews who will leave Palestine. Meanwhile, our responsibility is to create an orderly framework for a state in which the people of the land living are Palestinians and who can remain among their current inhabitants, after choosing a new regime for the rule of the State of Palestine, which is not missing any inch of its land or a letter of its name.

Is this delirium as the sons of the defeated current say?

Let’s let them be. There will remain with us, or in the world, those who would provide them with the fuel of life despite their defeat. Some of them no longer want an end to “Israel” anymore. Therefore, there is no use for them and their hallucinations. There is no point in discussing with the necessity of the great sacrifices that will be made to restore Palestine, as long as they see in it just suicide!

Today, “Israel” is living “the days of great anxiety” because of the erosion of its offensive and defensive capabilities, not only militarily, but also politically. For the first time in its history, “Israel” today needs US military bases on the occupied land of Palestine and American protection bases tens or hundreds of kilometers from its northern and southern borders. It also needs, without any concern, a direct US military presence to protect it from the enemies. Above all, the entity is in need, not for peace agreements that can no longer be justified, but for cooperation that provides it with the political umbrella to gain access to the Arab mind. After the role of Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Morocco in protecting “Israel’s” right to exist collapsed, it is now seeking a direct partnership with the kingdom of oppression and backwardness in the Arabian Peninsula – the last empire of its kind similar to it in the Arab world – to give it an “Islamic pardon” to help it not survive but to use the Arabs to confront its adversaries led by Iran.

“Israel’s” difficult situation is not only the result of the growing strength of its adversaries, but also stems from the fact that it no longer has moral superiority, even to its own citizens, after its long wars turned its army into a group of murderers who were forced to carry out more brutal killings so that the survival of the state would insured. But each time they come out from their maneuvers with serious flaws, making the probability of defeat in any future war equal to the probability of victory. The social structure was also weakened because the people of this state know, as the mainstay of its army, that things are no longer like before, and that all maneuvers of the last ten years focused on defense and not offense. Even major military drills were aimed at “keeping danger away” and not finishing it off. All this is enough to accumulate in the “Israeli” consciousness one defeat after another.

Today, “Israel” is no longer able to make a decision on its own. And disillusioned are those who believe that the enemy’s government or its military and security institutions are capable of making a war decision in the region without a direct US approval, coverage and input. Therefore, the leaders of the enemy are constantly working to convince the US administration that striking the enemies of “Israel”, today and not tomorrow, is equally in the interest of the US. “Israel” may find the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the only party in the world that shares this concern, after those madmen put themselves in “Israeli” shoes.

All these concerns are what dominated the events of the past months and weeks, including continuous military preparations that allows the enemy to wage a major war in the north and the south as well as to convince the Americans to launch a political and economic war against “Israel’s” opponents in the region, urging countries such as Saudi Arabia to take greater steps towards this confrontation. In the mind of the enemy, an American intervention would severely hinder its opponents’ front; and a Saudi participation would make the next war against a group of pro-Persian Arabs from an “opposing” political or religious doctrine a “consensus” that the West and “Israel” believe Saudi Arabia can speak for.

So that people do not get confused, what was aforementioned does not mean that there are military buildups on the border with Syria and Lebanon. But there is a special political decision leading to offensive readiness. This is accompanied by an increase in intelligence activity in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, and even Iran, in order to ensure a clear and realistic picture of the enemies; which is something the United States follows up on with decisions made by its administrations and the actions of US forces on the ground in Syria and Iraq. It is also an atmosphere, which falls in line with US efforts – in cooperation with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates – to complete a spiral step that ends with the declaration of a Palestinian state, but one without meaning, with no final borders, no independent authority, no free outlets, and no right of return for those who wish to live under it.

Today, we and the enemy, walk on a knife’s edge. Among us are those who fear confrontation, believing that the enemy alone is better, let alone if it is supported by America and Saudi Arabia. And among them are those who want to take us to a futile debate about the preference of this or that option to restore rights. But there are those among us, too, those who live in this land and do not waste a minute but work with all their strength, experience and knowledge to prepare for a moment when cries arise; screams of illegitimate children of an illegitimate entity, which was once, called “Israel.”

Nasrollah and the distance between the recognition of victory, its causes, and its consequences

Written by Nasser Kandil,

The Secretary-General of Hezbollah Al Sayyed Hassan Nasrollah presented in the speech of victory in the memory of the war of July a series of methodological issues in the evaluation of the experience of Hezbollah as a title of the choice of resistance in Lebanon and the region, and a number of the current political issues and titles. Regarding the methodological issues he conducted an intellectual debate, avoiding nominating the parties which it intended in the international, regional, and the growing Lebanese movement, a movement that recognizes the victory of Hezbollah, and a movement that tries to avoid the recognition of victory’s causes and meanings, or it tries to distort and to change its contents, and maybe it tries to employ the recognition of victory in order to wage a war of concepts against Hezbollah and its victory and what they represent at the level of the resistance forces as an ideology, concept, and choice. At the forefront of this war the attempt to make virtual goals with which the victory is related and around which the animosities, considerations, and the contrived sensitivities are created.

The first statement of account in the consideration of Al Sayyed Nasrollah is the logical sequence of the recognition of the meaning of Hezbollah’s growing force. This phrase is used by everyone to indicate to the various aspect of its victory from the Israelis and some of the international, Arab, and Lebanese analysts to take them to an equation that requires their recognition that their speech means that the war of July has failed, so say it frankly as long as you said the contrary at that time, say it clearly that the war of July has failed, because it aimed to what is more important than the weakening. Hezbollah’s force has increased by your recognition. It is not something marginal to say that clearly and without ambiguity, because on your words the fall of the threat of new war launched by Israel on Hezbollah and Lebanon which was possible depends. As long as the war of July failed in the light of less power, so how will Israel take the risk in the light of the greatest power? From these two facts we conclude that the recognition of the system of incitement against Hezbollah since the year 2000 and the liberation of the south have lost their meaning. The recognition of the failure of the war of July and the inability of Israel to repeat it led to the fall of the theory that based on considering the presence of Hezbollah’s weapons a burden on Lebanon that will lead to wars which are unbearable by Lebanon and the Lebanese. So the fall of this system coincided with the fall of the system of the animosity to Hezbollah, its weapons, and the resistance before the liberation, Thus this leads to a question; which is better to achieve the liberation by depending on the bet of the resistance or the bets of others, as the strategy of silence and the waiting for the strategy of negotiation? Lebanon has experienced both of them with the obsessive failure and the waste of sovereignty while it has experienced the resistance and the outcome was the liberation.

The one who does not have the courage to admit of the sequence of regularity of the growing force of Hezbollah away from his explanation of reasons is hypocrite in his recognition of the growing force and the victory, his speech is political, he tries to undermine the content of truth which he claims that he recognizes, So let the one who has a problem with this sequence make it as a pretext to evade and to escape from the full recognition, while the one who completes the recognition according to what is related to him has to admit that we are in front of a methodology that wins and proves its validity during four decades versus a methodology that falls and fails in approaching the same events and challenges. In the two decades before the liberation, the debate was true about the feasibility, effectiveness, and the credibility of the choice of resistance in making the liberation, along with non-liberation goals, once to enhance the negotiating status of Syria, and once to enhance the regional position of Iran, or to doubt of its ability to achieve, but after it was proven the lack of questioning of the credibility of the goal and the validity of the ability the debate has become real too about the usefulness of the weapons of the resistance and their role in confronting the threat of aggression or the danger of terrorism. In both cases it was said clearly that these weapons bring calamities and cause disasters. But now the results are clear by those who recognize Hezbollah’s growing force that its weapon protects, deters, and strengthens.

The recognition of this second series of concepts means the recognition that the matter is not a comparison between two lines or between two sources of arming and funding; however between two projects that stem from two different readings of the challenges, goals, and means. Those who were hostile towards Hezbollah during the four decades are the same; the advocates of negotiation, the advocates of disarmament, the advocates of the recognition of the fall of Syria, and the advocates of the recognition of the democracy through the Saudi and Qatari Arab Spring, the absolute divinity of America, their permanent issue is the complaint from the effeteness that they attributed once to the American and once to the Israeli and once to the Saudi  through the lack of stubbornness and stability as Iran and Russia do, evading from the recognition of the truth that they belong to defeated project, they escape from obligations which they are aware that they are inescapable facts, they con on the essence of the conflict with Israel, mock at  the idea of liberating Palestine and they belittle what they called as a wood language which believes that there are still major issues that worth the sacrifice and waging the war defending them, if they just check what the countries of Gulf spent to overthrow Syria alone or to appease America in their Gulf war, as well as the degree of stubbornness to the extent of brutality in the war in Yemen then they will confess that the matter is not related to the degree of support or the degree of stubbornness but the appositeness of the winning project and the credibility of its owners and the disappointment of the defeated project and the opportunism and the hypocrisy of its owners.

The one who has the courage to admit the two sequences worth the appreciation for the self-criticism and the search for the truth by linking the victory and the growing force with the winning of project that is transient of the twentieth and the twenty-first centuries and linking this victory with the honesty of its owners and the credibility of their positions. Therefore the question about the real goals of the resistance becomes far from factionalism and sectarianism. The resistance did not and will not invest its victory neither in the liberation, nor in the deterrence, nor in the war on terrorism nor in purging of Lebanon, nor in the support of Syria’s rise, nor in its recovery, nor in ending any dispute with its local opponents, nor in getting authoritarian gains in favor of a party or a sect. it concerns only about how to invest these victories in fortifying the national structure about its choice as a choice for the widest national alignment in the face of whom the Lebanese, the Levant, and the Arabs meet on considering them enemies  even at least in media. The value of the field victories infect the enemies while their political value is not through having gains that most of them will be achieved in a negotiation with the enemies’ camp in on authoritarian projects as the size of region in exchange of putting the resistance option on table, where the opponents of the resistance will not have neither a role nor a place nor a status which they suggest that they are constants. The issue of the resistance is not in this point, however it is in attracting them to its choice and the participation in the revenues of its victories, moreover, making the enemy understand that the resistance whose its military force is growing, its political and popular force is growing too and the bet on fragmenting its internal front has become from the past. So the one who refuses this call has to say one thing that while he is in full consciousness he decided to be the center of bet on the enemy to weaken the resistance after the enemy has lost the means to get rid of it. Every debate with the resistance is nothing more than presenting credentials to the enemy, and every talk about the growing force of the resistance is out of warning the enemy not the recognition to the friend

MAY 19, 2017

Israel Likely Killed Arafat

Shame for Fame: by Nahida Exiled Palestinian

by Nahida Exiled Palestinian

I avoided writing about this topic, trying to give Palestine Chronicle and its chief editor Ramzy Baroud the benefit of the doubt, but I don’t think keeping silent is an option any more

In March 2011 I met Ramzy Baroud during his UK tour, I invited him to stay with us in my family home, where he was warmly welcomed. As we both were devoted to working for liberation of our homeland and advocating for justice for our people, I thought we had forged a mutually respectful friendship.

I continued to communicate with Baroud via email and Facebook, sharing my poems, thoughts, comments and articles with him, with hardly any response, if ever.  The communication was a one way street, but I kept giving him the benefit of the doubt and finding excuses, for he is such a busy journalist.

In December 2013, I posted a series of  comments on Palestine Chronicle of which PC editor published only three while censoring the most crucial.

Being one of my Facebook friends, I wrote to Mr Baroud privately inquiring about the reason of censoring my comments, I never received a reply.

Today, April 12, 2016, I notice that he had deleted me from his list of friends (not sure when),  I contacted him again asking for an explanation, again no reply.

Also today, I noticed that the Palestine Chronicle team, which consists of “professional journalists and respected writers and authors“, has published one of my photoswhich I took during my visit to Palestine in 2012, without asking permission or giving credit.

Furthermore, in the same edition of Palestine Chronicle two poems are published: One is eerily the same topic and same title as a poem I published three years ago and had sent to Mr Baroud.

The second poem also bears almost the same title and has the same topic as one of my prose/poems, written in 2012, and is illustrated by my photograph that I used for the same publication, a photo that is significant because it depicts the garden that triggered me to write the prose/poem in the first place. Mr Baroud also received it via email at the time.

This is irrefutably not a coincidence, and is irrefutably an act of unwarranted hostility, an attempt by a fellow Palestinian to dispossess the intellectual rights of a fellow Palestinian author.

Ramzy Baroud, I am asking you for an explanation. What is going on? What has gone so wrong with you that you engage in such unfathomable act?

Why does Palestine Chronicle participate in censoring Palestinian voices and obfuscating their work, bordering on plagiarism?

Do we really need thought commissars in our movement of liberation?

Is it excommunication against untamed Palestinian voices whose narrative is not approved by anti-Zionist rabbis and lacking the kosher stamp?

This kind of subliminal attacks coming from a Palestinian, who brags of his father being a “freedom fighter” and who engages into yet another dispossession and attempted demoralization of a fellow Palestinian freedom fighter is beyond shameful

Is that the price of fame? Does Mr Baroud really think that it will not cost him discredit and shame?

Former Israeli Minister: Israelis to Visit Saudi Arabia Soon!

A former Israeli minister, part of an Israeli group that met with a Saudi delegation in Ramallah last month, said Israelis could be able to visit the Persian Gulf state “much sooner than you dream about.”

Netanyahu, SalmanIn a conference call Tuesday with British media hosted by the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre, Rabbi Michael Melchior said the day when Israelis can travel to Saudi Arabia is “in the cards and it will, as we say Inshallah, ‘with god’s help,’ happen very soon.”

Melchior, a former Knesset member with the ‘One Israel’ party and former minister for Diaspora Affairs, said his meeting with the Saudis focused on ‘religious issues related to diplomacy between the two countries.’

Melchior, currently the chief rabbi of Norway, said:

“Religious peace is a way of using another language other than the secular language of the Arab peace plan… religious peace is a way of including those Mullahs who are not yet part of this thinking.”

Asked about Saudi Arabia’s record of promoting Takfiri extremism internationally, he said:

“We’re trying to go ahead with the positive side of this. Today there is a big part of the Sunni world — and also the Shia world — who want to be part of the world. Saudi Arabia is investing a lot in getting the Israelis to adopt the Arab peace plan, at least as a basis for negotiations.”

Melchior noted that, while the Saudi-Israeli meeting last month prompted condemnation from Iran and Hezbollah, “the Sunni Arab world has neither condemned nor supported it.”

An exception, he acknowledged, is the Arab-Israeli Hadash party, which condemned the visit as “part of the normalization of cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Israel against Iran, Syria and resistance movements in the region” and Hamas.

“Even the Hamas condemnation was a very soft condemnation, they said it was not the right time for such a meeting but they didn’t really condemn it,” Melchior said.

During last month’s visit, the Saudi delegation, headed by former general Anwar Majed Eshki, met with Dore Gold, a veteran Israeli diplomat who is director-general of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among other Israeli officials as part of a Saudi attempt to normalize its ties with the Zionist entity.

“The Saudis want to open up to Israel.” Those were the words of an Israeli legislator who organized a Knesset meeting, in Israeli-occupied territories, with a retired Saudi general & his delegation of Saudi academics & businessmen. General Eshki’s visit hasn’t been applauded, even by traditional supporters of the kingdom, yet it marks one more step towards the limelight of what stage Israeli-Saudi relations are at. In this edition of the debate, we seek to understand the relationship between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia & the Israeli regime.

Quartet Issues Wishy-Washy Report on Israeli Occupation

occupationart

[ Ed. note – The Middle East Quartet has issued a rather toothless and wishy-washy report on the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

That may not strike many as surprising, although a month and a half ago there was speculation, at least on the part of Israelis, that Obama might try and use the report to bolster his sagging “legacy,” and it was reported at the time that Zionists were engaged in extensive lobbying efforts to try and “soften” the report.

It looks like they either succeeded–or else Obama had no such intentions to begin with.

The report–a total of eight pages–was released Friday, July 1, and can be accessed in full here. The best that can be said of it is that it does criticize Israeli settlements, affirming that they raise “legitimate questions about Israel’s long-term intentions (duh…ya think?), which are compounded by the statements of some Israeli ministers that there should never be a Palestinian state.”

That’s about as strong as it gets, though, and the same report hastily tosses in criticism of Palestinians as well–accusing them of “violence and incitement”–much as if the author were walking an allegorical tightrope in some overly-punctilious effort at being “fair and balanced.”

Palestinians who commit “terrorist acts” (i.e. resisting the occupation) are “often glorified publicly as ‘heroic martyrs,’” the report informs us. (You’ll note that the Quartet places the words “heroic martyrs” in quotes–it seems resistance isn’t heroic and sacrificing your life in a heroic cause doesn’t make you a martyr when the occupation you’re fighting against is being maintained by the US or Israel.) The report continues:

Many widely circulated images depict individuals committing terrorist acts with slogans encouraging violence. The spreading of incitement to violence on social media has gained momentum soince October 2015, and is particularly affecting the youth.

The report blames “Hamas and other radical factions” for this as well as “some members of Fatah,” but it also cites “extremist ideologies” on the Jewish side as well, calling attention to “price tag” attacks and also the phrase “Death to Arabs,” the phrase which seems to get spray-painted in a lot of these attacks.

And thus the tightrope balancing act is detectable throughout the report.

If you do a search, you’ll find that the word “tragic” is used once in the report–in reference to the deaths of Israelis. By contrast, settler attacks on Palestinians are described as “a serious concern,” although the report does cite the arson deaths–of three members of the Dawabsha family in 2015, and of Mohammad Abu Khdeir on July 2, 2014 (two years ago today)–killings which it refers to as “horrific.”

The delicate balance manifests in the report’s recommendations as well: “Both sides should work to de-escalate tensions by exercising restraint and refraining from provocative actions and rhetoric…” etc., etc. How the members of the Quartet expect a people who have been living under occupation for 68 years to “refrain from provocative actions and rhetoric” is not, however, explained.

By far, the report’s greatest failure is its omission of any mention of the settlements being illegal under international law. This, as I noted in a post back in May, had been one of the central issues in terms of anticipating what the final report might look like, and it was said to have been one of the main reasons Israel was  working so hard to get the tone “softened.” US officials have described the settlements as “illegitimate” or as “an obstacle to peace,” but they have never used the word “illegal.”

They still have not done so.

In the article below, the most salient comment is that given by by PLO Secretary General Saeb Erekat, who remarks that the report “attempts to equalize the responsibilities between a people under occupation and a foreign military occupier.” It’s a worthy observation.

One final thing I’ll mention: while the report does use the word “occupation” (there are actually four instances of it), nowhere is the word “genocide” to be found anywhere in its pages. As I have said before, Israel’s crimes   probably meet the legal definition of genocide. Failure to call genocide genocide may be an even more egregious shortcoming than the failure to call illegal settlements illegal, but then there are so many failures and shortcomings about this report, one is hard-pressed to list them all.

The Quartet is made up of the US, the EU, the UN and Russia. The signing onto the report by the first three should come as no surprise–but what are we to make of Russia’s apparent endorsement of this report? Should that surprise us?

The following article comes from Ma’an News. The headline above the story recalls to mind the old adage about trying to please everyone–and ending up pleasing no one. This seems to be what the Quartet has managed to accomplish. ]

Middle East Quartet report met with condemnation from both Palestine and Israel

Ma’an

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Both Palestinian and Israeli leadership reacted with disappointment to a report released Friday by the Middle East Quartet — the United States, Russia, the European Union, and the United Nations — that attempted to underscore the major impediments to a two-state solution.

Israel’s continued expansion of illegal settlements on Palestinian territory was cited in the report as one of the major obstacles to implementing a viable two-state solution, stating that their continued expansion has raised “legitimate questions” about Israel’s “long-term intentions,” as Israeli leaders have openly rejected the idea of an independent Palestinian state.

The Quartet called on both Israelis and Palestinians to “independently demonstrate, through policies and actions, a genuine commitment to the two-state solution and refrain from unilateral steps that prejudge the outcome of final status negotiations.”

In addition to Israel’s settlement expansion, the report highlighted two other main trends that undermined peace: violence and incitement on both sides, as well as and the Palestinian Authority’s lack of control over the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

PLO Secretary General Saeb Erekat criticized the report in a statement, saying that the report “does not meet our expectations as a nation living under a foreign colonial military occupation; wherein it attempts to equalize the responsibilities between a people under occupation and a foreign military occupier.”

“Evidently, certain parties of the international community insist on trying to avoid their own legal and moral responsibilities to implement international law and conventions; to protect the Palestinian people and to ensure the fulfillment of our right to self-determination,” Erekat said.

He also insisted that negotiations must hold an independent Palestinian state at its core, with East Jerusalem as its capital and the restoration of internationally recognized rights afforded to Palestinians, as he reiterated his support for the Arab Peace Initiative and the multilateral French-led peace initiative, for which the report was expected to form a basis.

Meanwhile, Israeli human rights watchdog Peace Now said in a statement that the report showcased the contradictions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies of settlement expansion on occupied Palestinian territory with his public support for a two-state solution during peace negotiations.

“If the Israeli government is interested in peace it must halt settlement expansion immediately. Otherwise, it must reveal its true intentions and face the consequences,” the statement read.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement following the publication of the report, slamming the Middle East Quartet for “perpetuating the myth that Israeli construction in the West Bank is an obstacle to peace.”

Netanyahu said Israel rejected “any attempt to draw moral equivalence between (illegal Israeli settlement) construction, and terrorism,” and rejected parallels suggested in the report between Palestinian attacks and “marginal” elements in Israeli society, likely referring to an increasingly hostile and violent Israeli settler population.

The statement said that the report was “troubling” for its adoption of a position that the presence of Jews living in the West Bank was somehow an obstacle to the two-state solution.

“The presence of nearly 1.8 million Arabs in Israel isn’t a barrier to peace; it is a testament to our pluralism and commitment to equality,” Netanyahu argued, a statement many reacted to with outrage for ironically making a dubious parallel between Palestinians with Israeli citizenship, and Israelis residing in settlements deemed illegal under international law.

The statement also condemned the Quartet’s report for failing to mention “payments made by the Palestinian Authority to terrorists and their families,” referring to stipends paid by the PLO to Palestinian political prisoners, former prisoners, and their families. Israel deems most Palestinian political groups to be terrorist organizations.

While the Palestinian Authority has said they have stopped paying the stipends, Israel ordered yesterday they will reduce tax transfers sent to the PA each month by $130 million, a figure said to be equal to salaries.

The move was made in a punitive reaction to a series of attacks and attempted attacks by Palestinians against Israeli targets in the occupied West Bank district of Hebron and Israel on Thursday and Friday that left two Israelis killed, including a 13-year old settler with American citizenship, and three Palestinians shot dead on the scene.

Netanyahu’s statement also slammed the PA for failing to condemn the Israeli deaths.

In recent months, Israel has accused Palestinian leadership of “inciting terror” and detained scores civilians for Facebook posts that Israeli authorities alleged were responsible for an increase in alleged attacks and attempted attacks against Israeli military targets and settlers.

Palestinians have instead pointed chiefly to the frustration and despair brought on by Israel’s nearly 50-year military occupation of the Palestinian territory and the absence of a political horizon.

All past efforts towards peace negotiations have failed to end the decades-long Israeli military occupation or bring Palestinians closer to an independent contiguous state.

The most recent spate of negotiations led by the US collapsed in April 2014.

Israel claimed the process failed because the Palestinians refused to accept a US framework document outlining the way forward, while Palestinians pointed to Israel’s ongoing settlement building and the government’s refusal to release veteran prisoners.

While members of the international community rested the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the discontinuation of illegal Israeli settlements, Israeli leaders have instead shifted farther to the right as many Knesset members have called for an escalation of settlement building in the occupied West Bank, and with some having advocated for its complete annexation.

A number of Palestinian activists have criticized the two-state solution as unsustainable and unlikely to bring durable peace, proposing instead a binational state with equal rights for Israelis and Palestinians.

The binational state — termed the “one-state solution” — has increasingly gained support among Palestinians, activist groups, and intellectuals purporting it as the most reasonable way of upholding Palestinian human rights and their internationally recognized right to return to lands they were expelled from during and after the establishment of Israel in 1948.

Voltaire Network: Saudi Arabia Building Embassy in Tel Aviv

Voltaire Network

PARIS, (ST)-In preparation for bringing the Saudi-Israeli secret relations to light, Saudi Arabia has begun the construction of a huge embassy in “Israel”, probably the most important in Tel-Aviv, according to Voltaire Network.

The Saudi King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz has nominated Prince Walid Ben Talal (5th world fortune with Citigroup, Movenpick, Four Seasons) as the Kingdom’s next ambassador in “Israel”, the network said in a report on Sunday.

Meetings between Saudi intelligence officers and Israeli officials have recently become open, reflecting the two sides’ insistence to boost mutual relations.

Shedding more light on the Saudi-Israeli cooperation, the network said that the two sides do not maintain official diplomatic relations, however, the Quincy Pact, signed between US President Franklin Roosevelt and Saudi King Abdelaziz in 1945, and renewed by President Bush and King Fahd in 2005, stipulates amongst other things that the kingdom of Al Saud would not oppose a “Jewish” homeland in Palestine.

The network pointed out it was not the United States, but former Saudi King Abdallah bin Abdul Azizi who financed the Israeli aggression called “Cast Lead” against the Gaza Strip in 2008-09 in which thousands of Palestinians were martyred and wounded.

Currently, the network said, Israel and Saudi Arabia are fighting a war together in Yemen, from a command centre in the non-recognized state of Somaliland. They are planning several operations for the exploitation of oil reserves in Yemen and the Horn of Africa.

It is worth mentioning that the recent meeting between the Israeli and Saudi spy chiefs over expanding cooperation indicates that Saudi Arabia gives no heed to the Israeli occupation crimes against the Palestinians and against other  peoples of the region.

Zionist Forces Kill 3 Palestinians in West Bank, Gaza

Local Editor

Israeli occupation forces havekilled three more Palestinians amid simmering tensions in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

In one of the incidents on Friday, a Palestinian protester lost his life during clashes with Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank city of al-Khalil (Hebron).

The Palestinian Health Ministry identified the victim as 22-year-old Oday Ersheid, whose brother had also been killed at the hands of Israelis during similar clashes in October.

Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation army shot and killed another Palestinian, identified as Issa Hroub, 55, near al-Khalil, claiming he had attempted to ram his car into Zionist forces at a checkpoint there.

On the same day, another Palestinian was shot and injured by Israeli soldiers after he allegedly opened fire at the troops at the Gilboa crossing near Jenin.

In the besieged Gaza Strip, violent clashes broke out between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli soldiers, who opened fire and killed a 41-year-old man.

Split in World Jewry: the ‘Diasporas’ vs. the Israelis

 photo jewishsplit_zpssz99p751.jpg

We seem to be seeing a major split in World Jewry over the policies of the state of Israel. A couple of recently-published articles are indicative of this.

One is a July 23 article that appeared in the Times of Israel about a new study that found, among other things, that diaspora Jews don’t feel the Israeli government is sincere about seeking a peaceful resolution with the Palestinians. Here is a brief excerpt.

World Jewry is finding it increasingly difficult to support Israel due to its ongoing conflict with the Palestinians, leading many communities to shun discussing the Jewish state altogether, a new major study has found.

The trend is eroding the Diaspora’s support for the Jewish state, warns the report by the Jewish People Policy Institute think tank, to be formally published next week.

Diaspora Jews, the report goes on to mention, are asking for an increased say in how Israel conducts its affairs. “Stop it! You’re making us look bad!”–that, essentially, when you boil it down, is what the diaspora Jews who responded to the survey are saying to the Israeli Jews.

The other article indicative of the split is an op-ed piece in the New York Times, published coincidentally the same day as the Times of Israel article, written by a Palestinian resident of the village of Susiya.

Susiya is a West Bank village which, as I reported in a couple of recent posts (see here andhere), is presently under an Israeli demolition order, and an international campaign has been launched to try and save it.

The op-ed piece is headlined, “Israel, Don’t Level My Village.” The author, Nasser Nawaja, discusses his family’s cyclic history of being made homeless by Israel, once in 1948 and again in 1986, going on to comment that the looming threat of a third dispossession “has now become immediate.”

Hardly any wonder, then, that diaspora Jews are starting to question whether Israel is really “sincere” about achieving peace–although one would perhaps allow that it is rather astonishing it has taken them this long to reach that conclusion.

At any rate, the decision by the New York Times to publish the piece by Nawaja would suggest that the split between diaspora and Israeli Jews is real and growing. Israel has been building illegal settlements in the West Bank for years. When did the New York Times ever voice any objection to it? I’m not aware of it if they ever did. What has changed now?

Perhaps it is that financially and politically powerful Jews, by virtue of the fact that Israel’s behavior has grown so egregious, are beginning to see the Jewish state as a threat to themselves and the empires they have constructed in their countries of residence. This is the subject of an article by Ariadna Theokopoulos and recently published at The Ugly Truth.

While being a Jew means never having to say you are sorry or engaging in delayed gratification, JP [“Jewish power”-ed.] has global agendas that do not welcome the light in which Israel defiantly basks, and, by association, draws attention to Jewish misdeeds worldwide, including the hijacking of power in the western world. It wants Israel to be mindful of PR.

Theokopoulos goes on to comment:

Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians whose land they took over has been beyond despicable from the very beginnings of the state, yet well-organized hasbara has managed to inculcate into the minds of the Western Goyim the dichotomy: Palestinians/Arabs/Muslims = terrorists vs Israeli Jews = peace-loving, long-suffering victims. Not so anymore. Israel is no longer seen as even a “legitimate” state but a rogue nuclear power, a racist, expansionist war criminal and war monger. Of more concern, in attracting scrutiny to its successful flouting of international laws, it has led to an examination of what exactly allows it to act with complete impunity. It has exposed the lines of power that move the governments of the major world powers, like puppets on a string, to act as its enablers, indeed as its agents. The lines are now seen by more people than ever before to lead to the Jewish lobbies, to the ZPC, which does not reside in Israel, but permeates the power centers of the US and the UK, and not only.

You can go here and read the full article.

Jews have accrued enormous power in the US and other Western countries. That is a statement that will get you accused of anti-Semitism, but it is also an undeniable fact. And as Theokopoulos correctly points out, Israel’s actions, and its ability to violate international law with impunity, are drawing attention to that power.

Every time Israel tears down another Palestinian village or goes on a rampage and kills another four or five hundred children in Gaza, what do you suppose diaspora Jews feel?

My guess is a rising level of nervousness and discomfort.

Christians Reacting To Rabbi Alissa Wise

July 02, 2015  /  Gilad Atzmon

Following the publication of my deconstruction of Rabbi Alissa Wise’s appalling  speech at Sabeel, I was approached by many outraged humanists, some of then Christians. People out there are starting to show some clear signs of fatigue of the Jewish Left spin…
1. An email from Janice (pseudonym). For the obvious reason Janice asked to hide her name. Once again, the fear of Jewish terror i must assume.

Subject: Rabbi Alissa Wise at Friends of Sabeel

I was at the Sabeel conference in Vancouver, and I agree with every word you say. The truth is, however, that I was too scared to stand up and say what I was thinking: “We’re here to talk about the Palestinians and BDS, and you’ve just given us a lecture on anti-semitism!” I did start to say it to the people sitting near me (who I mistakenly thought were murmuring about it). One of them turned out to be Jewish – so I ended up backpedalling (out of cowardice). I sent an email on this issue to the organizers, but never heard back. Rabbi Wise highjacked the evening conference, and we all just sat there and took it.

Janice

2. An email from Renne Kumba:

I think rabbiness Alissa Wise could say what she really wants
a bit more directly and straightforwardly. For example:

My not-so-dear lemmings, o.k. Christian sheeple,

I am sure that by now all of you know very well that
the Holocaust was the biggest event in the whole of human history, and there is absolutely nothing else that could ever match that. Don’t
even think of trying!!
It’s completely VERBOTEN!!
And yes, you like to celebrate your Christian “thingies” like
Christmas, Easter or something in between, but please keep it to a
bare, invisible minimum.
We have a very strong allergy to all those Christmas trees, lights,
ornaments, carols, animals, plants, music, cheers, spirit, food (well, maybe not food), etc.,
so you have to respect that and not to expose us to those nasty, very
nasty, allergens.
We thank you in advance for your cooperation. So, no more public Christmas from now on.
Understood? Oh, and no more Easter as well. All those eggs, bunnies, crosses, hymns, etc.  Who needs that anyway?
Although, my not-so-dear, soon-to-be sacrificial lambs.
It is ok to slightly, and I mean slightly, criticize Israel, but…. you
have to watch your mouth. (Or we’ll wash it with our brand new,
Nazi-made soap), and you shalt not utter anything that is not approved and stamped “kosher” by us. If you disobey, we’ll have
our not-so-secret weapon directed at you at once.
We’ll call you an anti-Semite (or a Jew-hater) and you life will be a
pure misery from that moment on. So, don’t you even try. ADL is already watching you, btw.
And they, mind you, are doing an excellent job.
Thanks Abe, (she blows kisses in the air).
As you all know, we want peace. Peace on our terms and peace among us Jews. You have to work very hard for that. Our peace is very important,
so don’t you get lazy. You must make sure that there is
peace for us.
We sort- of love you, but ONLY when you do exactly what we
tell you to do and ONLY what we tell you. Appreciate it.

You rabbiness Alissa, also called Wise.

P.S. Where is the standing ovation, the applause?
Where is everybody?? They all left? How dare they? What a bunch of anti-Semites.

Reported Hamas/Israeli Talks: Hold the Cheers

dcc9c-d8a8d8b9d8aad988

Stephen Lendman

(RINF) – Last Sunday, Hamas official Ahmad Yousef said “chats” were taking place with Israel under European mediation.

No direct Hamas/Israeli talks occurred. None are planned.

“We await the formation of an Israeli government so things can get more serious,” said Yousef.

“European diplomats and civil society activists come to the Gaza Strip constantly and pose Israeli viewpoints and convey the reaction of the movement through unofficial chats.”

Issues discussed include ceasefire terms and ending siege conditions “by opening a seaport to the outside world.”

A scheduled Jimmy Carter-led Elders delegation visit was cancelled. It planned to assess conditions, highlight the humanitarian crisis, and meet with Hamas officials.

No explanation was given. The Elders call themselves “independent global leaders working together for peace and human rights” – to “help resolve some of the world’s most intractable conflicts.”

The group’s spokesperson expressed concern about lack of reconstruction “and the continued closure of Gaza, and will work with the international community to improve conditions for its people.”

Israeli officials said they had no plans to meet Carter. Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said his cancellation wasn’t at Israel’s request.

In his book titled “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,” Carter said “Israel’s continued control and colonization of Palestinian land have been the primary obstacles to a comprehensive peace agreement in the Middle East.”

He calls West Bank/East Jerusalem settlements illegal, including products produced therein.

Yousef said international parties were mediating on returning remains of Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza last summer.

“Hamas has a lot of important cards to play, and surprises on the topic of the missing soldiers,” he added.

He explained no new deal would be made until Israel fulfills its earlier agreed on obligations.

He believes its new government when formed will have to deal with “Hamas’ surprise.”

Israel’s YNet News said Hamas sent Israel a “detailed proposal (for) a calm period of five to 10 years” three months before Israeli March elections.

No response was forthcoming. YNet News said Washington and Cairo rejected Hamas’ initiative because it bypassed the (US/Israeli controlled) Palestinian Authority.

“Israel is rolling into a dialogue with Hamas, even if it isn’t making a decision about it,” said YNet.

It explained Israel’s Occupied Territories coordinator and new IDF chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot are “pushing for talks…while the political echelon is making these moves possible.”

Dialogue with Hamas in any form is “conceal(ed).” It conflicts with Israel (wrongfully) calling it “a terror organization.”

Meanwhile, Israel continues blocking Gaza reconstruction. A previous article quoted UNWRA saying “(n)ot a single home has been rebuilt” – eight months after Israel’s genocidal war ended.

Large parts of Gaza were turned to rubble. Its economy is in ruins. Its 1.8 million people are ruthlessly collectively punished by Israeli’s lawless blockade, as well as land, air and sea attacks at its discretion.

What happens if talks continue remains to be seen. Israel’s history shows its word isn’t its bond. It breached previous agreements straightaway.

It’s all take and no give. It says one thing and does another. Peace and stability defeat its agenda. Hamas is a convenient enemy.

Expect no legitimate Israeli olive branch offered as far ahead as anyone might imagine. Expect business as usual harshness to continue whatever comes out of talks.

Efforts to Restart Sham Israeli/Palestinian Peace Talks

By Stephen Lendman

4-23-15

Palestinians never had a peace partner in Israel, America or other Western countries – less than ever now with fascist US and Israeli lunatics running things.

They’re all take and no give. They don’t negotiate. They demand.

They reject peace. They want unconditional Palestinian surrender.

They want endless wars and instability. They blame victims for their high crimes.

Netanyahu said he’ll never allow a Palestinian state – except perhaps a rump, isolated meaningless one on worthless scrubland surrounded by belligerent Israeli forces.

Decades of so-called peace talks failed. Chances for success now are virtually zero.

Britain, France and New Zealand urge passing a (worthless) Security Council resolution restating (dead on arrival) talks.

Washington said it may “reassess” its position – code language for old wine in new bottles.

Republicans and Democrats support Israel’s worst crimes.
Both countries partner in each other’s wars.

They’re in lockstep on longstanding Palestinian persecution – enforced Israeli apartheid conditions worse than South Africa’s.

Washington says one thing. It does another. It fully supports Israeli land theft, lawless settlements, occupation harshness, and premeditated aggression against defenseless Palestinian civilians.

Murdering them in cold blood is called self-defense. Legitimate Palestinian resistance is called terrorism.

Longstanding Israeli oppression under Netanyahu’s fascist regime is more hardline than ever.

Security Council resolutions change nothing. Israel ignores them entirely. Washington vetoes whatever harms its interests.

Restarting peace talks doomed to fail assures hypocrisy alone wins.

On Tuesday, AP said New Zealand is “working on a UN resolution aimed at restarting stalled negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.”

Its UN envoy Jim McLay told Council members it’s time for them “to use (their) moral and legal authority (to restart) productive negotiations” – no matter how affording Palestinians long denied justice is virtually impossible.

McLay said New Zealand is working on resolution text language to inject “new momentum” into talks.

France and other nations say they’re doing the same thing. “New Zealand stands ready to engage and be helpful,” McLay said.

His nation will wait to see how a French initiative plays out. New Zealand will act accordingly.

French UN envoy Francois Delattre said “(i)t’s the responsibility of this council to adopt a consensual and balanced resolution that sets the parameters of a final status and a timeline for the negotiations.”

He ignored peace process hypocrisy – one-sided US-led support for Israel, disdain for Palestinian rights since mass slaughter, destruction and displacement established the Israeli state.

He said nothing about French disdain for human rights – its partnership with US imperial wars. It’s turning a blind eye to Israel’s worst crimes.

Britain operates the same way. Its rogue policies are longstanding. Its UN envoy Mark Lyall Grant’s words rabg hollow urging “parameters for a peaceful and negotiated solution.”

Why not decades earlier? Nearly half a century of oppressive Israeli occupation continues.

World leaders able change things responsibly do nothing – not now, not earlier, not ahead as long as Israeli interests alone are supported.

Western high-minded rhetoric doesn’t wash. Pro-Israeli policies remain unchanged.

On Monday, US and Israeli representatives boycotted a UN Human Rights Council session.

It addressed last summer’s Gaza war – premeditated Israeli genocidal mass slaughter and destruction mostly harming Palestinian civilians.

Culpable Israeli officials remain unpunished. Large parts of Gaza remain in rubble.

No significant rebuilding began. Promised funds didn’t arrive. Palestinians remain on their own like always.

Western calls for peace reflect gross hypocrisy – a cruel obscenity Palestinians understand best of all.

Chances for them receiving long denied justice are virtually zero. Nothing short of holding culpable Israeli officials accountable for their high crimes can work.

Not as long as US veto power obstructs it. Not while Western states support Israeli oppression.

RISE AND TREVOLT ENTRY 3: REDUNDANCY AND OXYMORONS OF WORLD JEWRY’S NEW WORLD ORDER

zionism-mask

by Trevor LaBonte (Mouqawamah Music Exclusive)

RISE AND TREVOLT ENTRY 3

Why don’t we have a Christian Voice For Peace, or a Muslim Voice for Peace? The terms are redundant because every true Christian or true Muslim is automatically not just a voice but a force for peace.

And no Christian or Muslim in his right mind would ever believe that Jesus – a man who opposed the the Zionists of his day – would have supported a genocidal, usurping Jewish state.

But the term “Jewish Voice for Peace” is the opposite of redundant. It is an oxymoron.

There is no basis for peace when you believe that you were chosen by God (or by yourself) to rule over the planet, with the Gentiles who may happen to survive your big fiery holocaust relegated to the position of being your slaves.

FACT: What is today called Judaism is NOT a nice religion. It is and has always been a conspiracy against humanity, more of a domination strategy than a religion. The reason that the problem has only gotten worse and worse is that humanity is being held captive, not free to identify the source of the problem. This is the only explanation. We have gotten nowhere because step #1 was never really taken. Even the Old Testament prophets that are revered by Muslims and Christians aren’t the same versions of the “prophets” held in esteem by Judaism’s adherents; the Muslim-Christian understandings/ versions  of Moses, Abraham, Noah, Ishmael, Solomon, David, Lot and countless others are peace-loving, tyranny-opposing righteous men of God. The Jewish versions of these same personalities are nothing less than cold-blooded, mass-murdering, drunkard, incestuous, genocidal, warmongering, criminal, maniacal gangsters. Literally. It is right there in what the Jews refer to as their “holy” books. Does this not speak volumes?

Opposing Judaism, even though it is clearly wicked and filth-ridden if you study what it is, is placed outside the parameters for socially acceptable discourse. Your opposition to Judaism is never characterized as anti-Jewishness, or more appropriately, anti-Jewish-supremacy. We are taught to call it, “anti-Semitism”, because the Jews are terrified that “anti-Jewishness” or “anti-Jewish-supremacy” will become concepts in the public mind. Why would you NOT oppose conspiracies against not only you but all the rest of your human family as well? We have to get serious and rise up against this Beast.

Israel is supposedly the only democracy in the Middle East, yet 4.5 million Palestinians under its control can’t vote

A state that ignores the rights of its indigenous non-Jewish people is not a democracy

Today Israeli citizens are going to vote for their next government in a country often labeled as “the only democracy in the Middle East”. Ironically, they will be voting on ballot cards produced in an illegal Israeli settlement in the West Bank by Palestinians, who will have no input in the political process.

In fact, approximately 4.5m Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza have no say in deciding which Israeli political party will control every aspect of their lives.

The Oslo Accords in the early 90’s divided the West Bank into areas A, B and C. Area A is controlled by the Palestinian Authority (PA), Area B by both the PA and the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) and Area C solely by the IOF.  In reality, control over the everyday lives of Palestinians in each of these areas is controlled by the IOF. And it is done brutally. Movement is rigidly controlled, access to resources is denied and Israeli military incursions into villages and towns are frequent. Palestinians see violent settler rampages on a daily basis, which often involve the burning of agricultural land and physical assaults on anyone who gets in their way.

THE MOMENTS THAT HAVE DEFINED NETANYAHU’S RULE
A BENJAMIN NETANYHAHU VICTORY MIGHT BOOST THE ANTI-OCCUPATION MOVEMENT

In Gaza the situation is even worse. Even though they’ve elected their own government, Hamas, these Palestinian lives are quite literally at the whim of Israel and the political games it plays. The summer of 2014 saw over 2000 Palestinians in Gaza being massacred and much of the infrastructure flattened.

In order to qualify for building materials to rebuild their homes, Palestinians have to surrender their house coordinates to the IOF. This means that they can be targeted with precision missiles whenever the next Israel-Palestine war breaks out. What’s more, Israel has even been accused on putting Gazans on a “diet”, and of controlling the exact number of calories entering the strip between 2007 and 2010.

The 1.7m Palestinians inside Israel who are enfranchised are faced with a dilemma when it comes to voting. They are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. Although they have citizenship, it is on a nominal basis, and there is an entire body of Israeli laws designed to discriminate against them. Their situation is one of an internally colonised people and the type of occupation they face, although subtle, is very real.

However, some believe in changing the regime and ending the occupation from within, and this year we have seen something unprecedented: a joint Arab list. This list comprises of four main Arab political parties inside Israel. It is predicted that this joint list is likely to be the third largest slate in the Israeli Parliament. Indeed, even Netanyahu seems worried that the Arabs are taking up their right to vote, and has been using it to fearmonger Israeli Jews into voting for his party.

For the Palestinian citizens of Israel the voting debate is a serious one, and despite their differing stances both camps are adamant that Israel is not a democracy. A state that exerts its control over a people by means of a decades-old illegal occupation is not a democracy. And neither is a state that declares itself only for Jews and ignores the rights of the indigenous non-Jewish people.

Israel doesn’t belong to all its citizens and those under its control. It is an ethnocratic, settler colonial state that flouts international law on a daily basis by oppressing the Palestinians in varying states of occupation. And it does so with European and American complicity. The shinning beacon of democracy in the Middle East? Far from it.
