Hezbollah Says Israeli Threats Worthless, Presses on with Border Strikes

December 31, 2023

Screen capture of a video showing Hezbollah strike against Israeli border sites (December 2023).

A senior Hezbollah official stressed on Sunday that the Israeli threats against Lebanon are worthless. The remarks have been translated into actions throughout the last day of 2023, as the resistance fighters pressed on with strikes against Israeli sites at the border with occupied Palestine.

In statements published by Hezbollah Military Media, the Islamic Resistance’s strikes against Israeli targets were “in support to our steadfast Palestinian people in Gaza and in solidarity with their courageous and honorable resistance.”

At 12:20 on Sunday, direct hits were recorded as the Islamic Resistance fighters targeted Hanita Israeli site.

Later at 15:30, the resistance fighters targeted Al-Abbas military site with appropriate weapons, causing direct casualties among Israeli forces.

The resistance fighters then, at 15:45, targeted a gathering of Israeli occupation forces, near Hanita with appropriate weapons.

Israeli media reported that at least two anti-tank missiles were fired from Lebanon towards the occupied territories.

The Hezbollah Military Media published, meanwhile on Sunday, a video showing an earlier Hezbollah strike on Ramtha Israeli site in occupied Shebaa Farms, using a combat drone on Saturday (December 30).

For his part, Hezbollah Deputy Chief Sheikh Naim Qassem, stressed that threats made by the Israeli occupation were worthless.

“The Israeli enemy is in no position to force the resistance fighters away from the border with occupied Palestine and to return tens of thousands of displaced settlers to northern settlements,” Sheikh Qassem told a mourning service in Beirut’s southern suburb.

The Zionist enemy “is trying to show that it has the options to carry out an action that helps the settlers return to the north in a safe way, and to keep Hezbollah and the resistance away from the south.”

November 26, 2023

Deputy Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Sheikh Naim Qassem, praised the testimony of Abbas Muhammad Raad, son of the head of the Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc, as a shining example of leadership in the resistance movement. Sheikh Qassem emphasized that Raad’s testimony represents not only Lebanon’s resistance but also that of Palestine and Iran, highlighting the dedication and sacrifice of leaders and their sons on the frontlines.

Speaking at a memorial service for the martyr “Siraj” in Jbaa, southern Lebanon, Sheikh Qassem discussed the ongoing battle for Al-Aqsa and the occupied territories. Addressing the Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip, Sheikh Qassem highlighted the resilience of the Palestinian people and their unwavering support for the resistance. He emphasized that despite the 50-day conflict, the resistance remains strong and undeterred. The Israeli occupation’s attempts to weaken the resistance and turn the people against it were futile. Sheikh Qassem also discussed the truce in Gaza, attributing its success to the steadfastness of the resistance and their ability to negotiate on their own terms.

The Israeli entity decides to add 14 new settlements near the Lebanese borders to the government-funded evacuation plan.

The Israeli emergency authority and occupation army added 14 northern settlements within 5km from the Lebanese border to the evacuation plan funded by the government, following approval from Security Minister Yoav Gallant.

This comes as Hezbollah is increasing its operations targeting Israeli military bases and outposts located on occupied Lebanese lands in support of Gaza, which is witnessing daily Israeli massacres. In its latest report, the Palestinian health ministry said that the total number of Martyrs in the Strip surpassed 4,200, including more than 1,700 children.

According to Israeli media, the settlements are: “Snir, Dan, Beit Hillel, She’ar Yashuv, Hagoshrim, Liman, Matzuva, Eylon, Goren, Gornot HaGalil, Even Menachem, Sasa, Tziv’on and Ramot Naftali.”

Earlier this week, the Israeli military issued an order to evacuate 28 occupation settlements within 5km of the Lebanese borders. The new decision raises this number to 42.

Israeli military spokesperson Jonathan Conricus revealed on Tuesday that around 500,000 Israeli settlers had to evacuate their settlements in north and southern occupied Palestine since the beginning of the Al-Aqsa Flood operation on October 7.

US and Israeli officials disclosed to American media outlets that US President Joe Biden and his top aides have been pushing “Israel” to refrain from executing a major strike against the Lebanese Resistance, Hezbollah, that could draw it into the war.

Responding to reports stating that the US is warning the Israeli government from opening the northern front, the senior Resistance official said that Hezbollah is already “at the core of the battle.”

He added that the Al-Aqsa Flood operation achieved a great victory for the Resistance, which has brought shame to the Israeli occupation.

Sheikh Qassem revealed that numerous international and state actors have attempted to stop Hezbollah from participating in the confrontations against the Israeli occupation forces, however, he emphasized that the Party will intervene whenever it finds necessary regardless of outside factors and pressure.

He also reiterated to those that have contacted the Party that they have to halt the aggression first, too limit the scope of condonation.

Moreover, he highlighted that Hezbollah is engaged with three Israeli units in South Lebanon, adding that these units could have been transferred to Gaza’s Envelope if Hezbollah had not confronted the IOF.

Intense Clashes Rock Ain al-Hilweh Camp despite Diplomatic Efforts

September 10, 2023

Ain al-Hilweh camp witnessed today a series of hit-and-run operations between factions affiliated with “Fatah” and Islamic groups along the Hittin axis.

These confrontations involved the use of machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, with one such rocket landing near the camp’s eastern highway. This highway, which connects the city to the south, has been temporarily closed to vehicular traffic due to the ongoing conflict.

Additionally, several rocket shells exploded over the airspace of Sidon, affecting areas like Darb al-Sim and Sirop. Unfortunately, stray bullets from the skirmishes led to an injury sustained by a civilian named Adnan al-Zaknoun in the Ain al-Hilweh reconstruction area. Furthermore, a vehicle was also struck in the Sidon neighborhood.

A number of Lebanese Army soldiers were injured as a result of a bombshell falling on their post in Jabal Al-Halib, and they were transferred to hospital for treatment while the army responded to the source of fire.

The Army Command had previously warned against targeting army positions during clashes inside Ain al-Hilweh camp, otherwise it would respond to the fire source.

Rocket shells and stray bullets have landed perilously close to areas neighboring the combat zones. An incident on the eastern highway resulted in its temporary closure as a precautionary measure, while a Lebanese citizen in the Taamir Ain al-Hilweh area was injured by stray bullets.

The security situation in Ain El-Hilweh camp remains tense, with sporadic clashes persisting until midnight on Sunday. A brief four-hour pause in hostilities followed, only to resume at four in the morning.

Diplomatic Efforts

These clashes persist despite extensive efforts and high-level diplomatic contacts. Numerous meetings, chaired by Palestinian Ambassador Ashraf Dabour, were held late into the night in an attempt to mediate a resolution.

The confrontations are primarily concentrated in the western axis of the camp, specifically in the Hittin Jabal al-Halib neighborhood.

The repercussions have extended beyond the camp’s borders, with shells impacting nearby areas, resulting in more casualties, material damage, and increased displacement of camp residents toward safer zones within the city of Sidon.

Moreover, several projectiles have overshot the battle zone, landing in the vicinity of the Lebanese University’s southern entrance in Sidon.

Palestinian medical sources have reported casualties among both combatants and civilians involved in the ongoing confrontations within Ain al-Hilweh camp. These individuals have been distributed among Al-Hamshari and Al-Rai hospitals, as well as within the camp itself.

In response to these developments, Major General Elias Al-Bisari, Acting Director General of Public Security, has urgently called for an emergency meeting at the General Directorate’s headquarters. This meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. The aim is to address the security situation in Ain al-Hilweh camp, especially in light of the absence of progress from previous negotiations and discussions in quelling the violence.

In a significant development, the municipality of Sidon has dismantled a recently established camp within the city. This camp was set up under the supervision of UNRWA to accommodate Palestinian refugees displaced by the clashes in Ain al-Hilweh camp. Its establishment had sparked political, ministerial, and security concerns regarding the potential long-term implications of such a camp’s presence at the northern entrance of Sidon.

Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary-General, Sheikh Naim Qassem, expressed his deep concern over the situation unfolding in Ain al-Hilweh camp.

Speaking during the annual general meeting of the Islamic Religious Education Association in Baalbek, Sheikh Qassem emphasized the urgent need for stability in the camps.

He called upon all residents to unite in support of the Palestinian cause and to actively mobilize against the common adversary, the Israeli enemy.

French Presidential Envoy Visits Haret Hreik to Meet with Head of Hezbollah Parliamentary Bloc

 July 27, 2023

Head of Loyalty to Resistance parliamentary bloc, MP Mohammad Raad, on Thursday welcomed the French presidential envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian at the bloc’s headquarters in Haret Hreik, Beirut’s Dahiyeh.

The meeting was also attended by Hezbollah’s Head of International and Arab Affairs Sayyed Ammar Moussawi and the French ambassador to Lebanon, Anne Grillo.

Later on, Le Drian held a second meeting during his current visit to Lebanon with House Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain Al-Tineh in presence of Grillo as well.

The French envoy had arrived in Beirut on July 25 and met with the chiefs of the key political blocs in Lebanon in order to enhance the presidential elections.

However, the French initiative collided with the stances of the other four members of the quintet group of states (US, Saudi, Qatar, Egypt) meeting to discuss the Lebanese political crisis.

The recent quintet meeting warned to take punitive measures against the parliamentary blocs hindering the presidential elections in Lebanon, calling on the Lebanese parties to commit to the recommendations of the IMF to cope with the economic crisis.

The G5 escalation imposed on the French diplomacy to withdraw its proposal based on supporting Head of Marada Movement Suleiman Franjiyeh for presidency and the ambassador Nawwaf Salam for premiership.

Le Drian will reportedly return to Lebanon in September to hold a short dialogue with the Lebanese parties in order to conclude an agreement, pertaining the presidential elections.

Hezbollah Stances

Hezbollah Deputy Chief Sheikh Naim Qassem reiterated the Party’s readiness to discuss the proposals of the other political parties pertaining the presidential elections, reporting that the contacts have not reached any progress in this regard.

Head of Hezbollah politburo Sayyed Ibrahim Amin Al-Sayyed stressed that the era during which the foreign states used to choose Lebanon’s president is over, adding that the nation’s destiny is decided by the Lebanese parties, not the foreign envoys.

MP Raad also stressed that the Lebanese political parties must speed up the political solution in order to curb the repercussions of the socioeconomic crisis.

Vague Scene Dominates Presidential Vote as Franjiyeh Confirms Cooperation with All Parties if Elected

 June 12, 2023

Marada Movement Chief Sleiman Franjieh

Two days before the 12th session of the presidential elections called for by House Speaker Nabih Berri, vagueness continues to prevail regarding the final nominations of the various blocs in light of differences among the members of the same bloc.

Franjiyeh

Marada Movement Chief Sleiman Franjieh

Marada Movement Chief, Sleiman Franjieh, called for discussing all the nominations in a national dialogue, without any preconditions from any side,” stressing, “I do not impose myself on anyone.”

He added: “When a national candidate is agreed upon and there is a national consensus over him, then there is no problem for me.”

Franjieh warned against “this abolitionist mentality that was fabricated as with the Ehden massacre.”

Addressing Lebanese Forces Party Chief Samir Geagea, he said, “I ask Geagea, you are against the opposition candidate and it’s your right, but you have previously allied with Hezbollah’s candidate.”

He added, “They only boycotted me while nothing unites them,” considering that “the Free Patriotic Movement does not want a candidate from the ruling system, but it came forth with Jihad Azour from the heart of the ruling system and the impossible acquittal.”

He stressed that in his dictionary there is no obstruction in political life, while in the dictionary of others lies the statement of hindrance.

Franjieh affirmed that he has a clear vision for all constitutional, economic and other matters at the national level, stressing that he is committed to reforms, the Taif Agreement and the administrative centralization within it.

He said, “The president is the one who takes a position during his term and not afterwards,” vowing to be a president for all the Lebanese and not for a specific team if he reaches the presidency.

Hezbollah

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem

Meanwhile, Hezbollah Deputy Chief Sheikh Naim Qassem reiterated that the Loyalty to Resistance parliamentary bloc will attend Wednesday’s session and vote for Franjiyeh, adding that the session is not expected to lead to electing a new president in accordance with the current conditions.

Sheikh Qassem stressed that they reject Franjiyeh because he neither obeys the US orders, nor gets involved in murders in Lebanon, nor backstabs the Resistance and its martyrs.

His eminence stressed that the presidential election is aimed at achieving salvation, not challenging the political opponents.

Aoun

Lebanese outgoing President Michel Aoun during an interview with LBCI on Thursday (October 27, 2022).

Former Lebanese President, General Michel Aoun, on Monday said via his Twitter account: “Our system is democratic and our constitution guarantees freedom of opinion. Accordingly, every political party has the right to choose a presidential candidate without being accused of treachery and being subjected to threats (…). Respect for others and their rights is the basis of national unity and coexistence, and whoever wants to preserve the homeland must respect these principles.”

Karami

MP Faisal Karami

For his part, MP Faisal Karami confirmed that the national consensus bloc would vote for Franjiyeh, stressing that the latter is capable of addressing the major issues, including the return of the Syrian refugees.

Latest Reports

According to well-informed sources, the blocs supporting Jihad Azour have failed to secure the 65 votes needed by the candidate to win in the second round of the presidential elections.

Jihad Azour – Sleiman Franjieh

The sources added that the session will witness either of two scenarios: lack of quorum in the first round or loss of quorum in the second.

Thus, the sources conclude that the session will not lead to the win of any candidate, rather it will be a political maneuver during which every candidate will determine the number of votes he has secured so far.

Lebanon: Nominating Azour for Presidency, a Political Maneuver Aimed at Thwarting Resistance Candidate

May 31, 2023

Mohammad Salami

The political crisis in Lebanon intensified by the seven-month presidential vacuum is deepening since some parties have insisted on approaching the presidency issue on the basis of the private interests away from the national considerations.

Except the national duo-Hezbollah and Amal Movement, most of the political parties have persisted on vague nominations for the presidential elections due since August 31, 2023 (60 days before the end of the presidential term of the former President Michel Aoun).

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem indicated, in a tweet posted on May 29, 2023, that supporting Head of Marada Movement Sleiman Franjiyeh for presidency was based on a considerable number of votes he has secured, adding that those who reject him cannot agree on one candidate due to their contradictory programs.

On the other hand, a number of parliamentary blocs, including the Lebanese Forces, Kataeb, Free Patriotic Movement and the so-called the independent deputies, decided to propose a candidate in face of Franjiyeh without any clear criteria.

To begin with, the above-mentioned blocs do not have in common any unified political program that identifies their future decisions. In other words, any nomination they jointly propose is not based on a conspicuous political path.

Moreover, many of those blocs and individual deputies have alleged that the new president has to be a reformist who has not been involved in the state corruption. Others have also claimed that they may never support a candidate who is at odds with the Resistance.

Out of no where, all those blocs and lawmakers decided to nominate the former minister of finance Jihad Azour.

Jihad Azour is the Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the International Monetary Fund where he oversees the Fund’s work in the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia and Caucasus.

Azour served as Lebanon’s Finance Minister in 2005-08, during which time he coordinated the implementation of important reforms, including modernizing the country’s tax and customs systems.

Any political observer who might study this political case can never reach a clear formula followed by the parliamentary blocs which decided to support Azour.

Azour was the finance minister of the PM Fuad Siniora government accused by a large segment of the Lebanese people of being responsible for the socioeconomic woes the country has reached.

Azour was in office during the most critical stages during which an Lebanon face an Israeli war and his government performed “poorly” in the confrontation. Moreover, he was a member of the cabinet which continued to convene despite the resignation of all the Shia ministers (constitutionally rejected).

Thus, Azour is neither politically adequate because he does not represent the personality capable of confronting the foreign pressures pertaining the Resistance weaponry, nor economically functional as he belongs to a team accused of being responsible for a considerable part of the crisis.

In this regard, Sheikh Qassem had also said that some parliamentary blocs choose candidates who serve their private interests or suit the foreign scheme in Lebanon regardless of their programs, adding that Hezbollah has nominated Franjiyeh due to his clear program based on a long political experience.

The political life in Lebanon, thus, is stalling in wait for stones to be thrown into the still waters of the presidential deadlock.

According to many political estimations, Azour will not gain votes more than those used to be secured by MP Michel Moawwad in the context of maneuvers that tamper with the national stability.

Head of Loyalty to Resistance bloc, Hajj Mohammad Raad, stressed that the nominations being circulated are just maneuvers that will just elongate the presidential crisis.

The chaotic scene of the nominations proposed by some parties can never be arranged without a holding a national dialogue aimed at identifying the criteria of the required candidate expected to cope with the various crises of the nation.

Hezbollah Wargames Say Next Battle against Israeli Enemy will Be in Palestine: Sheikh Qassem

 May 23, 2023

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem stressed on Tuesday that the Resistance wargames sent a message of readiness and deterrence to the Zionist enemy.

In an interview with Al-Manar TV on Resistance and Liberation DAy, Sheikh Qassem indicated that the Resistance wanted to tell the Israeli enemy that the next battle will be in occupied Palestine.

“During the upcoming war, Zionists will not be able to sip coffee in Tel Aviv. The Israelis will see what they have not seen if they commit any folly”

Sheikh Qassem said that Hezbollah military drills displayed only a party of the Resistance arsenal, without showing the precision-guided missiles and much more.

His eminence reiterated that Hezbollah supports unifying the fronts against teh Zionst enemy, pointing out that Israelis must know that they can never violate the deterrence formulas maintained by the Resistance.

Sheikh Qassem indicated USA and ‘Israel’ acknowledge that Hezbollah Resistance has developed several classical weapons, including missiles and canons.

130 mm artillery developed by Hezbollah

Hezbollah Deputy Chief said that Resistance and Liberation Day is a national occasion, adding that those who exclude themselves from this pride are to be blamed.

Sheikh Qassem called for disregarding the remarks that oppose the path of resistance, adding that some of them had cooperated with the enemy during certain stages.

On the other hand, Sheikh Qassem pointed out that maintaining stability among Arab countries serve the Palestinian cause and the entire Ummah, adding that Hezbollah supports the Iranian-Saudi agreement.

His eminence noted that the Syrian President Bashar Assad has attended the Arab Summit with all his pro-resistance stances and after emerging victorious from a 13-year war.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General indicated that the presidential deadlock in Lebanon is caused by the stubbornness of some political parties, calling for resorting the constitutional norms in order to elect a new president.

Sheikh Qassem added that the Free Patriotic Movement and Lebanese Forces intend to have a joint nomination without having a joint project.

Sheikh Qassem: Objections Voiced by Some Lebanese Parties to Hezbollah Maneuvers are Useless

Sheikh Qassem described such objections as meaningless, adding that those parties have never defended the resistance even during the era of the Zionist occupation.

His eminence stressed that Resistance uses weaponry in order to defend Lebanon and prevent its return to the epoch of weakness, adding that the popular representation secures Hezbollah political participation in the state.

On the other hand, Sheikh Qassem stressed that the constitutional considerations govern the presidential elections, calling on the various Lebanese parties to settle their nominations.

Arab Summit Removes More Barriers Delaying Lebanon Presidential Elections

 May 20, 2023

Head of Marada Movement Sleiman Franjiyeh

Except the national duo-Hezbollah and Amal Movement, most of the political parties in Lebanon have not finalized their nominations for the presidential elections due since August 31, 2023 (60 days before the end of the presidential term).

Reasons behind this confusion are related to the considerations the parliamentary blocs rely on to choose the candidate they intend to vote for.

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem called on the various parliamentary blocs to settle their nominations for the presidential elections in order to prevent more procrastination in this regard, noting holding a national dialogue would bridge the gaps and clarify the vague considerations required to nominate candidates.

Sheikh Qassem said that some parliamentary blocs choose candidates who serve their private interests or suit the foreign scheme in Lebanon regardless of their programs, adding that Hezbollah has nominated Head of Marada Movement Sleiman Franjiyeh due to his clear program based on a long political experience.

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem

What exacerbates the conditions of the confused blocs is the lack of the interest shown by the foreign players in the Lebanese politics. Unlike the former presidential election rounds, the Arab and Western states display carelessness about the details of the Lebanese file. So far, the ongoing French endeavor has failed to cause any breakthrough in this file.

The concluding statement of the Arab Summit in Jeddah called on the Lebanese parliamentary blocs to elect a new president and form an effective government capable of carrying out reforms in order to cope with the ongoing crisis.

Thus, the Arab states urged the Lebanese to end the presidential vacuum without interfering in the nominations in a way that represents a case of obligation.

Arab Summit

Some Lebanese parties who are close to the Saudi royalty may be waiting for a clear order or command in order to facilitate the presidential elections.

However, the statement in addition to Syria participation in the Arab Summit will help several blocs settle their nomination.

For instance, a group of Sunni lawmakers had announced that they would vote for Franjiyeh in case the Arab states support this choice. Thus, after the Arab Summit, they would easily take a step in this direction.

In general, the political map in Lebanon will witness major changes in light of the regional developments which will converge with the insistence of Hezbollah and Amal Movement on supporting Franjiyeh in his presidential battle till he reaches Baabda Palace.

Local, International Circumstances Paving Frangiyeh Way to Baabda Palace: Breakthrough Closer

 April 24, 2023

Head of Marada Movement Suleiman Frangiyeh

Mohammad Salami

The Lebanese political deadlock, represented by the presidential vacuum and the absence of the effective government as well as their repercussions and reverberations, may witness an imminent breakthrough in accordance with the given reports.

Since the end of the term of president Michel Aoun on October 31, 2022, the Lebanese parliament has failed to elect a new president due to the insistence of some blocs on voting for confrontational candidates away from the national consensus.

Baabda Palace

However, the national duo-Hezbollah and Amal Movement- announced clearly their support to Head of Marada Movement Suleiman Frangiyeh for presidency. This nomination has formed a serious endeavor to end the presidential vacuum due to Frangiyeh’s down-to-earth and moderate character, on one hand, and frustrated the other blocs attempts to push the Lebanese politics into chaos.

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem indicated on Sunday, April 24, that Frangiyeh has secured a balancing number of votes amid the failure of the so-called opposition blocs to agree on one candidate. His eminence urged the various blocs to support the serious candidate who has secured the highest number of votes.

For his part, Head of Hezbollah Executive Council Sayyed Hashem Safieddine warned against the procrastination in approving and implementing a salvation plan, stressing that what is offered to the other team may not be offered later.

Sayyed Hashem Safieddine during interview with Al-Manar (August 14, 2022).

Meanwhile, it was remarkable how KSA’s state-run newspaper, Asharq Al-Awsat reported senior sources in the French capital Paris as saying that France is still insisting on supporting Frangiyeh for presidency and Nawwaf Salam for premiership and that Paris rejects any other suggestion in this regard.

It is worth noting that Paris hosted Frangiyeh and other Lebanese politicians in the context of its endeavor to help the Lebanese parties reach a political deal in coordination with Saudi Arabia.

Over those updates, the Lebanese Forces militia’s chief Samir Geagea appeared grim and disappointed in a televised interview. Geagea failed to present any plausible reason for rejecting the nomination of Frangiyeh, disregarding all the local and foreign updates pertaining the presidential elections.

Accordingly, Head of Marada Movement is scheduled to have a televised appearance during the few coming days in order to announce his presidential program amid the ongoing crises plaguing Lebanon.

Sheikh Qassem Recalls the Days of The April 1996 Aggression: Details of The Resistance & Negotiations

April 13, 2023

By Al-Ahed News

A total of 27 years has passed since “Israel’s” Grapes of Wrath Operation in 1996. The enemy sought to break the resistance and violate Lebanon’s sovereignty and that of its people. But the grapes turned sour and “Israel” was soon getting a bitter taste of regret and defeat.

This is the anniversary of the wounds inflicted on the shield that protected civilians in Lebanon and secured recognition for the right of the Lebanese to resist. On this occasion Al-Ahed News sat down with the Deputy Secretary General of Hezbollah His Eminence Sheikh Naim Qassem.

He took us back to the days of the difficult negotiations in Damascus that paved the way for what became known as the Israeli–Lebanese Ceasefire Understanding. He also shed light on the role of late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad in its success and his cooperation with Hezbollah Secretary General His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who was in Damascus at the time.

Furthermore, Sheikh Qassem told Al-Ahed about the role of a “central military official” at the time – the martyred commander Sayyed Mustafa Badr al-Din.

“He prepared the fighters in an organized way; he had a strategic mind; he loved precision in his work and planned everything; and he was known to be a disciplined person in the sense that he desired a high degree of discipline and equipped the fighters with the best types of equipment, weapons, and capabilities. He provided supplies, means of transportation, hiding places and hiding in a distinctive way. He was the military commander in this battle and was keen to ensure that the number of missiles being fired never decreased.”

Sheikh Qassem was referring to Sayyed Badr al-Din’s role in maintaining the rate of rocket fire throughout the war and the divine guidance that accompanied the process.

He also touched on the Secretary General’s statement during the aggression, which came to serve as a principle for Hezbollah – “Hezbollah will not sign the same document as the ‘Israelis’”. Sheikh Qassem explained how the party applied it in all subsequent events.

The Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General also used the interview to send a message to Palestine, its people, and its resistance in the climate of the approaching International Quds Day:

You have proven your true worth through sacrifices, martyrs, and the wounded and through the participation of men, women, children, and everyone in resisting the occupier. It turns out that when some capabilities are available to you, you at the forefront, you give your souls and your money and you sacrifice your homes.

This people are great people, and I am confident that they will be victorious and will liberate Palestine and Al-Quds, God willing, and it is only a matter of time. A country with such a people can only triumph.

On another note, Sheikh Qassem pointed out the positive effects of the Saudi-Iranian rapprochement on the region.

Below is the full transcript of the interview:

Q – On the anniversary of the April 1996 aggression, during which the resistance established the first equation for the protection of civilians, how did this equation develop as “Israel” is known to study its options well before initiating any aggression on Lebanese territory?

A – The April aggression is the second juncture in the post-1993 broad “Israeli” attacks. The aim of the aggression was to stop the resistance, incite the Lebanese public against it, and obtain an international resolution, one way or another, that would restrict the resistance.

But the steadfastness of the resistance, the continuous bombing of the settlements, the pace of the barrage and the number of missiles launched daily, which showed the “Israelis” that the resistance was not diminishing and that its capabilities were not weakened, are all important factors.

We succeeded in letting the enemy understand that the battle is long and that it cannot defeat Hezbollah and that if it continues, it will pay a heavy price which entails the continuous bombing of the settlements in northern Palestine.

We see the April Understanding as “Israeli” and international recognition of that fact that resisting is a legitimate act and that the mutual bombing and reaction by the resistance is an acceptable response because it is self-defense and the defense of the Lebanese citizens, and this is an important equation.

In fact, we were bombing because they were bombing civilians in general. Otherwise, we consider the “Israeli” soldiers and not the settlements as our main target.

Hence, in the face of the aggression in April 1996, we established an understanding that is meant to protect civilians by threatening to bomb “civilians” in the “Israeli” entity. I can say that this is the first equation that strikes a balance between civilians and “civilians”.

However, this equation laid the foundation for another equation that took place after 2006, when the balance of deterrence became much more comprehensive without a written understanding.

In other words, today if “Israel” attacks anyone in Lebanon and if carries out military attacks on any region or citizen, there will be a response against the “Israeli” entity.

This new equation is the fruit of the April Understanding. There is a balance between civilians and “civilians”, but in a developed way. It has now become an equation of a balanced deterrence that includes all of Lebanon, not just civilians in Lebanon. This is a great achievement.

The Syrian role during April 1996

Q – What did Syria represent to the resistance at that time, especially during the negotiations? Did this role change or develop during the July 2006 war? What about this relationship today?

A – Syria’s role, especially that of President Hafez al-Assad, during the April 1996 aggression was central and essential.

“Israel” was in Sharm el-Sheikh, and all the talk at the conference was about not disturbing “Israel”, preventing the resistance from working, and protecting “Israel”. All of this was sponsored by America.

So, nothing has changed for us between the past and present. The Americans directly attack us. The latest of which, as we know in Lebanon, are the sanctions against the Lebanese, offering complete cover for the July 2006 aggression, trying to cause chaos in Lebanon, controlling and trying to prevent institutions from functioning normally, and the people backed by the embassies adopting the popular movement in 2019 in an attempt to direct hostility towards the resistance and Lebanon. American behavior has always been on the side of “Israel”.

Q – Sayyed Zulfiqar was the cornerstone of confrontation in that aggression. What do you remember of his strength during those days? What was his presence like?

A – Sayyed Mustafa Badr al-Din “Zulfiqar” was the central military official. He prepared the fighters in an organized way; he had a strategic mind; he loved precision in his work and planned everything; and he was known to be a disciplined person in the sense that he desired a high degree of discipline and equipped the fighters with the best types of equipment, weapons, and capabilities. He provided supplies, means of transportation, hiding places and hiding in a distinctive way.

He was the military commander in this battle and was keen to ensure that the number of missiles being fired never decreased.

I remember back then, the plan was to make sure there were enough missiles along the posts on the frontlines to last for several days, and if they needed additional projectiles, some would be transferred from the villages north of the river or sometimes from the Bekaa or Beirut.

Due to the ferocity of the battle, ammunition and rockets were consumed quickly, causing a shortage. Had this same pace continued, the “Israelis” would have felt, after a few days, that we have reduced the number of missiles that we will be launching.

Sayyed Zulfiqar believed that we should continue and look for any way to move the missiles to the frontline posts.

Thanks to God Almighty’s support, clouds appeared in the skies of April, blocking the “Israelis’” view. So, the brothers moved large quantities of missiles to the frontline positions.

Because of Sayyed Zulfiqar’s boldness, he agreed that the pace continue despite the danger of it stopping after a few days. This is one form of divine guidance.

Q – During the negotiations, the Secretary General of Hezbollah said that Hezbollah will not sign the same document as the “Israelis”. How did this principle remain constant in the events that followed, up to the agreement to stop military operations in July 2006, and all prisoner exchanges, as well as others that led to the protection of Lebanon and its wealth?

A – We had a discussion in the Shura Council led by His Eminence the Secretary General on how a group of countries could sponsor this understanding without having Hezbollah’s signature, and we are the main stakeholders.

Since we cannot sign on a document that has “Israel’s” signature, the solution was naming Lebanon as the representative of the resistance. Therefore, it was possible for Lebanon to sign the understanding document that had the signatures of major countries, including America and France. Syria’s signature was there too.

Lebanon acted as the official signatory because it was trying to deal with major countries and trying to bind the “Israeli” entity, which has no respect for any covenant or pact. Meanwhile, Hezbollah did not sign the understanding.

Technically, the April Understanding does not have Hezbollah’s signature, even though it was a written understanding. But it does have the signature of the Lebanese state.

Later, the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 was passed in 2006. This international resolution did not need to be signed because it was issued by the Security Council.

Then, during the demarcation of the maritime borders, an agreement was reached with the Lebanese state that there would be two separate copies. The “Israelis” would sign one, and the Lebanese would sign the other. The two copies would go to the United Nations. This means that the signatures were not on the same paper.

We maintained this practice at all stages, and Hezbollah did not sign on the same document as the “Israelis”. Even during prisoner swaps, the exchange took place through a mediator. We never engaged in direct discussions or signed the same documents as part of keeping our distance and not recognizing the “Israeli” entity. As a resistance, we had to establish the project of fully rejecting this entity and refusing to legitimize it, even partially.

Q – What are the implications of what we have witnessed during the past few days, when the “Israeli” entity came under missile attacks from several fronts in response to the violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque? Has the Zionist entity become more vulnerable to shakes as a result of the unity of the resistance axis?

A – Before we discuss the source of the missiles that were launched from Lebanon, the Golan Heights, Gaza, or any other place, we must talk about the “Israeli” aggression against Al-Quds and the Palestinians, whether in the West Bank, Al-Quds and its surroundings, or Gaza. This is where the primary responsibility lies.

So, when the world talks about missiles launched from here or there, I consider this the wrong discussion. The discussion should be, “Why is “Israel” attacking?” The Palestinians have the right to defend themselves in the ways they see fit, and we are not here to justify any action.

But we are talking about principles and rules. The question must be: Why does the world not stop the Zionist attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque and put an end to the “Israeli” crimes against the Palestinians? This is the question and not where the missiles were launched from.

Q – There has been a lot of talk in the “Israeli” media in recent weeks about the role of Hezbollah, not only on the southern borders with occupied Palestine, but also along the borders all the way to the occupied Golan. What is the truth about this role with this expansion?

A – Hezbollah is present in Lebanon, and its resistance emanates from Lebanon. Those who are resisting the temporary “Israeli” entity in the region are the Palestinian people and the other forces in and surrounding Palestine. Hezbollah does not hide that it supports anyone who resists “Israel” anywhere, and we consider that the Palestinians have every right to fight “Israel” inside Palestine and to liberate Palestine and Al-Quds. We are by their side and support them. They are the compass, and we support and fight to liberate the land in the way we see fit.

Q – In the Quds Day climate and with the escalating situation in Al-Aqsa, what is your message to the Palestinian people?

A – A great salute must be given to the founder, Imam Khomeini, who founded the International Quds Day. This heralded a new phase in which people, resistance groups, and countries stand alongside the Palestinian people to fight the “Israeli” enemy, in addition to the open support for the Palestinian people and resistance to expel the occupier.

Here, we tell the Palestinian people: You have proven your true worth through sacrifices, martyrs, and the wounded and through the participation of men, women, children, and everyone in resisting the occupier.

It turns out that when some capabilities are available to you, you, who are at the forefront, give your souls and your money and you sacrifice your homes.

This people are great people, and I am confident that they will be victorious and will liberate Palestine and Al-Quds, God willing, and it is only a matter of time. A country with such a people can only triumph.

Q – What is your interpretation of the resumption of Saudi-Iranian relations?

A – The resumption of Saudi-Iranian relations carries two main subjects. The first is the change in direction in the region by focusing on the central enemy – the “Israeli” entity – instead of tirelessly working on making Iran the central enemy, and we clearly see the repercussions of this issue.

As for the second, the Saudi-Iranian agreement will open a new page and phase in which there will be strength and dignity for the peoples and countries of the region through stability, solidarity, cooperation and help in changing the pattern that the Americans wanted in our region, and this is a great achievement for future generations.

For us, the Saudi-Iranian agreement is a new phase in every sense of the word in our region towards more cooperation and stability, isolating “Israel” and confronting it, and restraining America’s hand from many issues of concern to our region.

We hope that the outcomes of this agreement will be influential on the entire region. According to what we have learned, the resumption of bilateral relations is proceeding very quickly, and a resolution to the problem between Yemen and Saudi Arabia is also proceeding at a rapid pace. The resumption of Saudi relations with Syria is moving ahead, and all of this is an indication that the agreement is progressing quickly. Certainly, it has positive effects on Lebanon, but the exact impact and its timing remain unknown. We do know that this agreement is a good thing.

Q – Is there anything new concerning the Lebanese presidential file?

A – The Lebanese presidential file is still pending due to the insistence of a number of parliamentary blocs not to engage in dialogue and not to be rational in their choices.

Today, the only person who has a large number of votes, according to all the statistics and evidence, is Minister Suleiman Frangieh. All the other names presented in the media cannot catch up with him.

Therefore, these blocs that were not able to unanimously agree on a candidate that has the ability to pass the quorum in parliament should engage in dialogue to see if it is possible to bridge points of view in favor of this option – Minister Suleiman Franjieh to be president.

The alternative is to waste time and prolong the vacuum, and we want to elect a president as soon as possible because it is a constitutional challenge that all solutions in Lebanon depend on.

The time has come for the various parliamentary blocs to be realistic and head towards finding common denominators for a president who has the ability to be open to everyone and is able to save Lebanon, God willing.

Hezbollah Deputy SG: “Israeli” Strikes on Syrian Civilians Amount to Crime Against Humanity

Feb 21, 2023

By Staff, Press TV

Hezbollah has censured the latest “Israeli” air strikes on Syria, stating that the raids against civilian-populated neighborhoods in the capital Damascus amount to a crime against humanity.

“The ‘Israeli’ aggression against Syria and its civilians is a crime against humanity; and deserves condemnation of the international injustice and the American and European bias in favor of the Zionist regime by covering up its crimes,” Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General His Eminence Sheikh Naim Qassem wrote in a post published on his Twitter page.

The “Israeli” attack was launched from the occupied Golan Heights early on Sunday days after a 7.8-magnitude deadly earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, targeting several sites in Damascus, including the southwestern residential neighborhood of Kafar Sousah.

At least five people, including a soldier, were martyred and 15 others wounded in the “Israeli” airstrikes. Many of the wounded are in critical condition, and many residential homes in Damascus and its countryside were damaged.

Syrian air defense units intercepted most missiles before reaching the targets.

Meanwhile, Syria has urged the United Nations to take necessary measures to deter the “Israeli” entity’s attacks and hold it accountable for the latest deadly missile attack on Damascus.

“When Syria was trying to heal its wounds, bury its martyrs, and receive condolences, sympathy, and international humanitarian support in the face of the devastating earthquake, the ‘Israelis’ launched an air aggression targeting civilian-populated neighborhoods,” the Syrian foreign ministry said in a statement.

The “Israeli” entity frequently carries out missile attacks on targets in Syria, mostly using the airspace of Lebanon or the occupied territories. The regime frequently violates Syrian sovereignty.

Syria has repeatedly complained to the UN over “Israeli” assaults, urging the Security Council to take action against Tel Aviv’s crimes. The calls have, however, fallen on deaf ears.

Hezbollah Belittles ’US Syria Sanctions Waiver’

Feb 11, 2023

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General His Eminence Sheikh Naim Qassem belittled Washington’s alleged temporary and partial waiver of its sanctions against Syria, which the US has recently issued under the pretext of facilitating relief missions in the earthquake-stricken Arab country.

Sheikh Qassem made the remarks in a tweet on Friday, which read the following: “The American administration, with its implementation of the Caesar sanctions and blockade of Syria and its people, is devoid of all humanitarian standards.”

“Allowing the flow of aid now [to Syria] won’t change the US’ brutal image,” His Eminence went on to underline.

Syria has been a target of US sanctions since 1979. The US and its allies intensified their sanctions against the Arab people in 2011, after the nation found itself in the grip of rampant and hugely deadly foreign-backed violence. Strengthening the sanctions even further, the United States approved the Caesar Act in 2019, targeting any individual and business that participated either directly or indirectly in the Arab country’s reconstruction efforts.

Earlier on Friday, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control [OFAC] issued the waiver for the Caesar Act sanctions, allegedly authorizing earthquake relief transactions for a period of six months.

The quake hit Turkey and neighboring Syria in the early hours of Monday. The 7.8-magnitude temblor has so far claimed respectively around 20,213 people in Turkey, while 3,553 people have been reported dead in Syria.

Hezbollah, itself, issued a statement recently, announcing the mobilization of all of the movement’s capacities toward helping out the disaster-hit Syrians.

The Lebanese resistance group’s relief endeavors have featured dispatching convoys of humanitarian aid to the earthquake-affected areas in Syria, as well as the collection of foodstuffs, medicines, and first-aid materials for transfer to the Arab nation.

Hezbollah Officials: Burning of Holy Quran Assaults Dignity of All Muslims

 January 23, 2023

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem stressed that burning of Holy Quran in Sweden is an assault on humanity and the divine religions, a fabricated sedition with Western support, and a clear inability to promote the materialistic concepts in face of the loftiness of Islam.

Sheikh Qassem wondered whether insulting 1.5 billion Muslims does not deserve to be confronted, holding the Swedish authorities and all the governments which allow the anti-Islam offenses responsible for their assaults

For his part, Head of Hezbollah Juridical Committee Sheikh Mohammad Yazbek indicated that the Swedish offense of burning Holy Quran is an assault on the dignity of all the Muslims, calling on all the Islamic World to move against this slander.

Yemenis Take to the Streets of Saada to Denounce Sweden’s Crime Against Muslims

January 24, 2023

By Al-Ahed News

Yemenis held a massive rally in Saada to protest against the Swedish permission to burn a Holy Quran edition, calling to boycott Stockholm and expel its ambassadors from all Muslim countries.

A statement issued after the march slammed “the crime of burning copies of the Holy Quran in Sweden,” labelling the measure as “hostile in the series of war against Islam and Muslims.”

The statement further accused the western-controlled Zionist lobby of standing behind the crime of burning copies of the Holy Quran, and called on “the western leaders and the international community to liberate themselves from the Zionist Judaism and to stop insulting the prophets, their books, and fighting their teachings.”

The protesters also demanded in their statement an official apology from the Swedish government as well as to hold the criminals accountable. “We call for boycotting Sweden and expelling its ambassadors from the Muslim countries for its criminal behavior against the sanctities.”

In the same context, Yemen’s Ansarullah resistance movement strongly condemned on Sunday the crime that took place in Sweden, describing “the anti-Islam behavior in the west as reflecting the ethical and political bankruptcy of the western governments.”

Relatively, the Sanaa government foreign ministry denounced the burning of the Holy Quran.

Additionally, several other countries slammed the Swedish decision to permit the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran, and warned against inciting Muslims all across the world.

Third Anniversary: Dozens of Thousands of Iranians Visit Martyr Suleimani’s Tomb in Kerman, Confrontation Won’t Stop

 January 2, 2023

Former head of IRGC’s Quds Force General Qassem Suleimani, assassinated by a US drone strike in Baghdad in 2020.

According to Al-Manar reporter in Iran, dozens of thousands of Iranians have visited Martyr Qassem Suleimani’s tomb in Kerman, paying tribute to his soul and recalling his feats.

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem said in a tweet on Monday that the confrontation will not stop, adding that Suleimani is a martyr, leader and role model.

Martyr Suleimani achieved liberation in the battlefield, sustained people’s dignity, and set Palestine and Jerusalem as a major cause,  according to Sheikh Qassem.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Qassem said that Trump is an unjust criminal killer, who kills aggressively and openly and supports the Zionist occupation without accountability.

Large billboard-style posters honoring Martyr Commander Suleimani were installed across Gaza Strip in loyalty to his sacrifices he had made for the sake of the Palestinian cause.

On January 3, 2020, a US drone attack claimed the two martyrs Suleimani and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, the former deputy chief of Hashd Shaabi Committee, after targeting their convoy near Baghdad airport.
